Where the Hell is EddieS (Mummy Mtn TR)View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 32 of 32 messages posted.
“Alright we had a great time - despite the rain and hail. Me, Bison, Adventurist, Tequilla Woman and EddieS went out to the Lawn Lake area and spent two nights. Planned to Summit Hagues (the high point of Larimer County at 13,560) and Mummy Mtn (13,529) Well, we got Hagues, but not Mummy. We lost EddieS at least twice, ;) We had rain and hail. We ate awesome pizza. I'm sure the gang will fill in the gaps with tr's and pics. oh yeah, we found Potts Puddle too. last edited: 7/24/05 3:54:16 PM” 3:53:49 PM 7/24/05 “Home, tired, trip report and pics later... Awsome Trip!” 4:15:31 PM 7/24/05 “Did you find EddieS? :-) Where did you get pizza? Was it by any chance Chicago's Best in Estes Park?” 6:57:20 PM 7/24/05 “No, I'm still lost. Wandering around, clueless, hungry & nekkid. BUT HAVING A GREAT TIME.” 7:02:01 PM 7/24/05 “Alright TR and pics in a minute, Woodzie - Yep, Chicago's Best, and it was GOOD!” 7:26:27 PM 7/24/05 “Of Course Chicago's Best! Where else? Sorry, but we ate yours. Here's our Pictures! last edited: 7/24/05 7:41:04 PM” 7:38:32 PM 7/24/05 Day 1 - Friday “Ok, here we go. I decided to set out at 11:00 on Friday morning to get to the TH by 12:30 or 1:00, but as I was packing I couldn't find my case for my glasses, so I had to run by Target to get a case, then there was massive traffic due to road construction in Boulder and of course paving on 36 west of Lyons, so I had to go all the way around to the park on 7. Finally got to the park about 1:30 but then had to wait for a long while at the backcountry office to get a car tag. Got to the TH about 2:15. As I was getting ready Adventurist and Mrs. Adventurist (From here on referred to as "Tequila Woman") drove up. We all got ready and set out around 3 pm. It was HOT and the trail started up via switchbacks away from the TH. Eventually we came to a nice view of the Roaring River below us, and all of the damage from a flood due to a dam break on Lawn Lake long ago. There was a nice stretch of trail along the river before the trail started climbing again. It was up, up, up for quite a ways. Finally we came to the interesection for Lawn Lake, we headed the other way to our campsite at Tileston Meadows. Here we faced another seemingly unending, very steep climb, before a gentle descent to the campsite. Both Roam Around and EddieS' tents were already set up but they were not around. We quickly notice that we were being swarmed by hordes of mosquitoes, and we started applying large amounts of DEET, which seemed to help... A little. Roam Around wandered into camp a few minutes later, he'd been scouting the route that we would use to come down Mummy Mtn. We set up our tents and got ready to cook dinner. A little later EddieS wandered into camp, he'd hiked up to Crystal Lakes to escape the mosquitoes. We ate dinner, hung out in the meadow where there was a bit of a breeze to keep the mosquitoes down, and got ready for bed. When I went to take my contacts out I discovered that after all the time I took to get a new case for my glasses, I had forgot to actually pack them, I'd left them in the new case in the back of my truck! Damn it, so I took out my contacts and wandered around half blind for the rest of the evening. Somehow I even managed to hang my bearbag.” 7:41:12 PM 7/24/05 Day 2 “We got up fairly early, ate breakfast and set out for Hagues Pk. and Mummy Mtn. Had a fairly uneventful hike to Lawn Lake and then up to the Saddle between Hagues and Fairchild. The last pitch of trail to the Saddle was extremely steep. We took in the views from the Saddle and Roam Around got a nice group shot. We then headed up the shoulder of Hagues Pk. We made our way up to a long talus slope. I went around the East side of the talus hoping to find an easier route. But all I found were a whole lot of boulders. I climbed back up through the boulders toward the main ridge and eventually saw EddieS directly above me and Roam Around farther up the mountain. I climbed toward Roam until I came to a noticeable notch not far below the summit. From the notch the climbing got a little steeper and more exposed. I had a couple of moments of fear, but managed to make it to the top where Roam Around was waiting. We hung out up top, signed the register, and waited for the others. After a bit of time had passed we wondered why the others hadn't summited yet. So we walked back over the Southern edge of the summit to look for Adventurist, Tequila Woman, and EddieS. We saw them far below, heading back down. We called out to them, then they called back for us to go on without them. Roam Around and I headed of the summit to the Northeast and descended toward the saddle between Haques and Mummy. This involved a lot of very tiring scrambling and rock hopping. As we approached the low point of the saddle we noticed that dark clouds were moving in. At this point we decided that going up Mummy Mtn. was not going to be in our best interest. We considered our options and ended up traversing along the Northern slope of Mummy Mtn. then climbed to the shoulder on the mountains east side and descended the route that we had originally planned on. Along the way Roam Around noticed a large herd of about 50 or 60 Elk on the tundra far below us. Unfortunealty they were to far away to get a good picture. The descent from Mummy's East shoulder was very steep and wore out our already tired legs. Eventually we came to the drainage just to the West of the campsite and followed that down to the trail. We arrived at camp to find that the others weren't there yet. We wondered where they were. A while later Adventurist and Tequila Woman made it back to camp. They had come back down the trail via Lawn Lake. They asked us where EddieS was. Uh, hmmmm.... We didn't know, we assumed he'd been with them. They told us that he had said that he was going to angle over toward the saddle below Mummy to try and meet up with Roam Around and I. About this time the thunderstorms started to break over us. We quickly threw up Roam Around's silnylon tarp and huddled underneath it as the rain and hail came down. We also began to become concerned about EddieS. Eventually the storm ended about 5 pm. A short time later Roam Around and Adventurist headed off down the trail to either try and find EddieS or to get the patrol cabin at Lawn Lake and report him missing. A little before 6 pm, they came back into camp with EddieS in tow. Apparently he'd waited a while for Roam Around and I at the saddle, then descended and waited out the storm before heading back along the trail to camp. We ate dinner, talked, swatted at clouds of mosquitoes, then the rest of the group set off to try and find Pott's puddle. I had already taken my contacts out and couldn't see much, so I just went to bed. Apparently the group lost EddieS again for a while during their attempt to find the pond.” 8:00:20 PM 7/24/05 Day 3 “Got up early and got packed up. I was in a hurry because I was being savagely attacked by mosquitoes. At this point my feet were completely covered in mosquitoes bites, I'd been were sandals and the bastards had been biting right through my socks. I believe this is the first time on a TT trip that I was ever the first person packed up and ready to go. The others were taking their time packing up, but I was sick and tired of being mosquitoe food so I headed on down the trail. It was a long walk back to the trailhead, but I got there and headed to town to get something to drink. I then drove back to the TH to wait on the others, eventually they came down the trail and we all headed into town where we had great pizza at Chicago's Best before saying our goodbyes. An absolutely fantastic trip. Probably the most difficult and scariest mountain ascent I've done. It was great meeting Adventurist, Mrs. Adventurist (AKA Tequila Woman) and EddieS. I know I'll be hiking with you all a lot, I don't think we could possibly have a better group out here. Makes me glad I moved here. Miss me? :-) Good trip report and photos :-) But now you've done it - I already miss Colorado and now you've gone and posted pics of my favorite park!! Inquiring minds want to know - how did Danielle get the name "Tequila Woman"? LOL! And isn't Chicago's Best Pizza absolutely best pizza you've ever had? My mouth is watering for it. Bison, when did you move to Colorado? If its been recently, you're gonna love the snowshoeing in the winter.” 8:20:57 PM 7/24/05 “Woodzie, Chicago's best was really, really good, don't know about best. I believe Danielle was telling a story, don't remember the details, and that's where Tequila Woman came from. I moved here a few weeks ago. I'm sure I'll go snowshoeing this winter, but I'll be doing a lot of snowboarding at Winter Park, Copper, and Breck, so who knows when I'll fit it in! last edited: 7/24/05 8:25:51 PM” 8:25:02 PM 7/24/05 “Bison pretty much nailed the trip report. Wildlife spotted: Elk - the big herd and three individuals just prior to seeing the herd, only a little closer. Grouse Mule deer, just outside the campsite Chipmunks Gazillions of mosquitos - they just fogged around your head. Yes, we got blown off Mummy due to gathering ominous clouds. We also spotted lightning several miles to the north east. After it was all over with we did comment that the storm seemed to move north and we probably could have done the summit - but you never know those things until after its all over with. The storm that hit in camp was rather intense for about 5 minutes, I love my siltarp! The climb up Hagues was easier than the climb up Comanche, but only slightly, and every bit as fun. I'll get my pics ready and up probably tomorrow.” 2:55:55 AM 7/25/05 Group Shot “ ![]() At "The Saddle" Elev: 12,308 From left to right: Roam, EddieS, Adventurist, Tequilla Woman and Bison. You must be a little tired this morning!” 8:38:32 AM 7/25/05 “"yawn" I went "out" for a little bit yesterday evening.” 8:40:11 AM 7/25/05 Potts Puddle “ ![]() Potts Puddle is off trail and for some reason has the reputation of being difficult to find. We searched for about an hour Saturday night, but on Sunday morning after Adventurist studied the map a little more closely, we walked straight to it. It looks to be really shallow but is very pretty and tranquil as well.” 8:47:11 AM 7/25/05 “Cool Pics and Trip Reports!” 10:08:41 AM 7/25/05 “Hey Yall!!! Great TR and pics! 2 buttkickers in one month? Leave it up to Roam.... Wish I coulda been there. Maybe next time. How did Danielle get Tequila woman again? Sounds like an interesting story.” 10:23:05 AM 7/25/05 “Thanks for the pics and stories. ticktockticktockticktockticktock - why isn't it August yet? :)” 10:54:31 AM 7/25/05 “Thank goodness for those thunderstorms that came through, it's no longer 6824 degrees in Denver, much cooler today.” 11:11:11 AM 7/25/05 Hey Debbie “It was 'Chicago's Best'- in case you hadn't heard.” 3:50:22 PM 7/25/05 “and it was goooooooooooooood. props to woodzie, it was all the raving about how good the pizza was before the full moon snowshoe deals that made me make that part of the trip plan. I think it should become a standard feature of any trip through Estes Park from here on out!” 3:52:04 PM 7/25/05 “Awesome group shot! Nice report Bison!” 4:05:55 PM 7/25/05 Hey, EddieS “Bite me! LOL!” 5:13:04 PM 7/25/05 “beautiful pics!” 5:57:39 PM 7/25/05 Here's my pics.... 9:07:41 AM 7/28/05 “Roam, Great Pics! Did you get my email the other day?” 9:22:33 AM 7/28/05 “Cool Pics. Bison - no - I got an email from you but there was no content or attachment. Please resend” 10:04:26 AM 7/28/05 “nice report and pics.
