feeling burned out at work

I've been feeling burned out at work lately. More so than normal, I would really rather be doing something at home or be out on a trip than sitting at my desk at work. Maybe its just the effect of having warm weather outside. I have been at my job for 6 years now - maybe I'm getting something like the "7 year itch" that married folk feel sometimes. Its not that I'm overworked (I'm not), I just don't want to be here. Work always gets in the way of life, you know? LOL.

Anybody else feeling exceptionally blase' about their jobs lately?

Understood, techntrek.

I love our clients but...other aspects less than optimal...

You know the drill.

i feel ya tech...it's always hard on me too in the summer...(he he i said hard on)...one of the things i like about my company is that it's pretty big so if i want/need to move around there's plenty of opportunity to...it's not always a true "promotion", in fact it's usually a lateral move but it makes it more interesting and makes me more marketable...what ever that means

I feel the same way lately. Unmotivated to work. I'm blaming it on the heat.

With something new to do in the last few weeks, I'm feeling a little more positive about work.

Of course, they have this building a/c'd to within an inch of your life, so maybe my body is just confused and thinks it's winter.

i've been saying for months now that this job is really getting in the way of my life!

I've been considering a major change, but can't decide what.....

1423 more days to retirement

I keep track of the number of days and when feeling depressed about work I just repeat to myself "1423 more days" or whatever the count is for that day

you are not alone. I think i'm ready for a career change or go back to school. Going to put at least another year in to vest my retirement. I'm young, so i'm not too afraid of pursuing other options, but after more than 4 years here, i'm not feeling motivated at all.

You guys need to join the army.

You'll get lots of outdoor time.

There seems to be a movement of chucking it and going to Colorado lately. I was looking for gainful employment opportunities in New Mexico last week, but nothing was as much money for as little effort as what I'm doing now.

When the kids are gone in a couple years I might have to try that "major change" Roam is talking about.

The thought of a career change did cross my mind, but there's no way I'll find another job making what I do with the current bennies and retirement bennies that I now/will have. Plus the perks. I would be an absolute idiot to quit (or join the Army, LOL).

Happily I'm in a big organization and can move around, like timecline. I can even go almost anywhere in the US. But I doubt I will - my roots are where I am now and I love my house.

I can pretend I'm in the Rockies with my office's A/C cranked to about 49F year-round. Like bit, there's lots of computers around me so they keep it arctic. And yes, going out to 95F feels good!

I guess I slog it out for another 19 years until my youngest is out of college. Hmmm, that's 6935 more days...

Your job: Signs you've stayed too long

Very interesting read, and timely since it was published today. Let's see, this paragraph hit home:

"You pigeonhole yourself. Hollander knows top performers who stay at their jobs because they don't believe they could succeed elsewhere. "The longer you're at a place, the more you think your success depends on your environment," she said."

That thought has certainly crossed my mind. I know objectively that it isn't true, but subjectively I think that sometimes.

I hate my job. On work days I don't want to get up when my alarm goes off. I'm usually in the middle of some dream which is much more interesting than my job. *sigh* I see a recruiter this week about other opportunities. I wasn't cut out to do accounting anyhow. blah.

As a matter of facts I’m updating my resume and hitting the bricks after 8 years of service. I’m planning on getting my nurses assistant certificate and getting a good grunt job hopefully with a few benefits while I decide on a OT Assistant’s certification of LPN license.

Tech, sorry to hear about your situation been there before...

I have never loved my job as much as I do now. I am challenged and feel that this summer has been my most difficult and fun at the same time. I never thought i would feel this way about work.

Nigal - you should look into what student loans are available. I came out of college with about 20k in loans. I'd never make what I make if I hadn't of had them though.

also, nigal, if you're thinking about nursing, find a hospital that pays for you to go to school and get a lower level job, like you said, a "grunt job"...many hospitals even offer accelerated certificate programs for things like rad tech

i've been through the mid life crisis too if you can't tell...well, quarter life crises anyway

LOL, don't know if its a mid-life crisis @ age 33. If I live to 75 its close, though. Does this mean I get to ditch the family car and go buy a Corvette?

For a while I thought about changing careers. I actually considered looking into what it would take to become a forensic pathologist, because this area of the country is woefully lacking. But I decided against it.

The way lifespans are increasing, in the future probably everyone will have a first and second, and some a third career. Think about it, if you're gonna live to be in your 90's with good quality of life, do you really want to just sit around the last 30 years or so?

I'm burned out too. Finially went to midnights to "chill". Like having all day, everyday to myself. Getting a LOT of work done at home. All those chores & projects getting done or completed. Our yard has never looked better either. Just finished a 6,000lb concrete base (sloping yard) for my garden tractor shed. Kinda like semi-retired. Five years left until I fully retire.

I am over the work thing, too. Can't retire for another 25 years, so what to do in the meantime? I even went out to Colorado on vacation and interview over Christmas; got the job and turned it down because they didn't offer me enough money...and keep thinking how stupid is that. I guess I should have weighed in how much I was willing to pay to live closer to younger mountains:) Maybe next time I will get to stay. Hmm....I think I might quit work this week:)

extra pizza's nothing to sneeze about :)...you should see if you can cut out the middle man...instead of them paying you extra money every two weeks, have them just send a pizza directly to your door

well, a guy does have to eat....

if i asked them to send the pizza direct, they'd probably deduct extra amounts for delivery and processing.....

I find if work is slow, I get much more bored and unhappy. My work depends on other people (admin. asst.). If I have time to surf the web, it is because things are quiet. The more I surf, the more unhappy I am with my job. I have been unhappy a lot this summer since my boss has been doing a lot of traveling.

Fortunately I have my out - in less than 9 months I get to quit my job to go hiking. That will be a very happy day. I've watched the numbers go down month by month - 3 years, to 2 1/2, to 2 years, to 18 months, to 12 months - and at this point, 9 months from now I'll be on the trail.
