We may try this trail seeing that no one has taken it yet. It is an 8 mile loop so it will be a lot easier for the first timers. I may also set the meet time back to 12PM because we will not have to meet as early. We can still check out Patton Cave on Sunday after we hike out. All those in favor, say I.” 11:45:13 AM 8/15/05 “uuuummmm....i don't know what to say...part of me says that's cool but part of me says let's do this in addition to the already planned route not instead of” 11:49:33 AM 8/15/05 “I hear ya! We can day hike it, maybe? We'll see.” 11:51:33 AM 8/15/05 “were's it at?...the map of deam seems pretty crowded with trails already” 11:52:08 AM 8/15/05 “I cannot seem to find an updated map of the park, but they told me it was north of Lake Monroe.” 11:53:20 AM 8/15/05 “TC, I am keeping it as the original route. We can dayhike if on Sunday if we want. 8 miles is nothing.” 11:56:32 AM 8/15/05 “is north of the lake still considered deam?...i was thinking about hiking out to the lake once we got the the campsite...do you know how far the campsite is from the peninsula trail?” 11:56:39 AM 8/15/05 “tc tell your wife anotehr newbie woman will be on this trip too :D” 11:58:58 AM 8/15/05 “wow...i just went to their site...the map for deam is on sale for $0.50 with no postage http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/hoosier/maps.htm” 11:59:18 AM 8/15/05 “SC, who dat?” 12:05:38 PM 8/15/05 “It sounds like they added land. I don't know. I had no idea this had happened, they both spoke of it last night at dinner (Unless I dreamnt it) If you look at the map I have posted below: http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/hoosier/images/maps/trail_maps/deam_wilderness_backpage.pdf I think we will be camping right at the junction of the peninsula trail at one of the 2 campsites. I seem to remember camping at a site the last time I took this trail that is not marked on the map though. We camped near a small pond that you can see if you zoom in that is right under the 2.2 on the map. I may be wrong on that, I honestly do not remember. Regardless, a hike out to the lake is something we can do on Saturday, or Saturday night! Night hikes are cool!” 12:05:45 PM 8/15/05 “I am guessing they are selling so cheap because they have to re-print new ones that will add the new system of trails.” 12:07:19 PM 8/15/05 “Is she going to be able to hike what we have planned Nicole? Do you have her e-mail address? If you do, shoot it to me. backpakn2@sbcglobal.net” 12:08:33 PM 8/15/05 “i see...i looks like that little peninsula that points south into the lake is part of deam...they must have put in a trail that goes around the perimeter of that” 12:12:52 PM 8/15/05 “That is what I was thinking too.” 12:19:59 PM 8/15/05 The new trail “The new trail is part of the HNF, but not the Deam Wilderness. The Pate Hollow trailhead is at the Paynetown State Rec Area parking lot. It was kind of a joint venture between the Forest Service and the state DNR. You can find the map at the HNF link above. Make sure you only camp on Forest Service land. Backcountry camping is not allowed on state land at that site, and Paynetown is the regional HQ for the Conservation Police.” 11:09:45 PM 8/15/05 “Cool, thanks BTA!” 9:51:22 AM 8/16/05 “Ha ha he said Police!!!!!!!! 8p” 2:18:19 PM 8/16/05 “WK - Those campsites on the peninsula can be absolutely filthy with the boaters using them for their personal outhouses.” 2:24:16 PM 8/16/05 “Now that sucks! 8|” 2:26:51 PM 8/16/05 “I want to hike the route that is posted on the trip page. It has been a few years since I have, and I miss it. We can take a night hike down the peninsula trail and check out the lake or whatever. If we are up to it, we can dayhike a section of the Pate Hollow trail on Sunday.” 3:11:37 PM 8/16/05 “WK - If I can go, I'd be agreeable to any itinerary. I just wouldn't want to spend a night in Camp Spider....lol” 4:41:17 PM 8/16/05 “camp spider? Chin, are you saying I need to bring some of our pets along? WK, when I get home I will send you that e-mail tonight or early tomorrow” 4:42:48 PM 8/16/05 “Where is camp spider? I don't think we will be staying there. Unless the Crazies bring along some little friends. Cool Nic!” 5:00:40 PM 8/16/05 “The nice thing about being a slower hiker in September is "allowing" the young guns to clear the way of all the spiders.” 5:07:05 PM 8/16/05 “Ha Ha!” 10:11:07 PM 8/16/05 “thats what hiking poles are for.” 10:12:57 PM 8/16/05 “I ran into some spiders last year at Knobstone and I thought "damn, how far ahead of me are those guys if that spider could make another web?" Turns out I had missed a turn.. lol” 10:37:52 PM 8/16/05 “lmao!!! :D chin, is mugsy poo going to be there?” 10:40:09 PM 8/16/05 “I would indeed love to bring the Mugster. When the topic of the Peninsula came up I had some ugly flashbacks from last year. Mugsy found a "trophy" that a boater has left at the campsite and just HAD to roll around in it. I'm sticking some rubber gloves in my pack this year......yuck” 1:01:27 PM 8/17/05 “LOL @ chin...do you have a lab?...i have a part lab and have the exact same problem with her...she once rolled on(or should i say in) a opossum that had been dead about 3 weeks...she stood up and shuck and slim went everywhere...i was tempted to make her run along side the car back home...she'll be coming on the trip and maybe my beagle mix too.” 1:13:21 PM 8/17/05 “My shepard has done this as well. Usually other dogs s h i t !!!!” 2:39:15 PM 8/17/05 “Mugsy is a cockapoo and loves the trail. ”3:09:16 PM 8/17/05 “mugsy :) I heart him.Im gonna take him home with me :)” 3:10:55 PM 8/17/05 “Damn, I have the same tent and the same boots. But I don't have a dog like that.” 3:17:30 PM 8/17/05 “mugsy is one of a kind :)” 3:17:54 PM 8/17/05 “I have to agree he is a very pimp dog! 8)” 11:41:07 PM 8/17/05 “I used to have the same tent, and I still have the same boots (asolo's right?), but my dog is not that dog, either. Cute dog! I love how he sits all spread legged!” 12:30:18 AM 8/18/05 “He wasn't even 1 in that picture and we have worked on posture since then.....heheh I love those Asolo boots and the Clip Flashlight has been good to me. CM will be happy to know that Mugsy isn't the food thief he once was. He has changed his strategy from thief to cute-begger.” 11:11:39 AM 8/18/05 “Yes but is still a sandle theif??? SC :)” 11:12:58 AM 8/18/05 “Oh yes, guard those sandals with your life.” 11:16:21 AM 8/18/05 “had to change myself to a maybe for this trip...might have to change to the trip the week before...i'll keep you posted” 3:14:50 PM 8/22/05 “That's cool. I still hope you can make it. You think you might make it to the trip down to Mammoth Cave. That is shapping up to be a sweet hike!” 3:17:14 PM 8/22/05 “I'll be in the Hoosier National Forest the weekend prior to this trip. I'll try to make a good trip report. If there is anything you need me to note/do/pick up while I am there let me know.” 3:17:46 PM 8/22/05 “So you guys decided on that spot, huh. You should have fun down there.” 3:24:11 PM 8/22/05 “WK, i've been keeping an eye on that trip...some people going that i'd like to meet...it kinda depends on the weather, i'm a cold weather baby though weather.com says averages in november for there are still in the 70's” 3:30:33 PM 8/22/05 “They weather down there this summer has been VERY hot. I think the temps will be very comfortable. I made it at the beginning of NOV so we could comfortabe, not freezing weather.” 3:47:02 PM 8/22/05 “Yeah, WK. It took no effort to get my friends to sign up. One is flying in from Duluth and the other is coming from Indy. The tips you gave me helped a lot because I came up with a backup plan in a few hours and we were still moving. So thanks!” 4:31:52 PM 8/22/05 “Very cool! When we having that beer?” 4:42:07 PM 8/22/05 “pitts, are you going on the trip golfhiker is planning or a separate one?” 4:46:46 PM 8/22/05 << back to Hoosier National Forest (Charles Deam) page
