Hoosier National Forest in September

“Crazy Mike and Crash taold me about a new trail that just opened that is part of Charles Deam. We may try this trail seeing that no one has taken it yet. It is an 8 mile loop so it will be a lot easier for the first timers. I may also set the meet time back to 12PM because we will not have to meet as early. We can still check out Patton Cave on Sunday after we hike out.

“It sounds like they added land. I don't know. I had no idea this had happened, they both spoke of it last night at dinner (Unless I dreamnt it)

I think we will be camping right at the junction of the peninsula trail at one of the 2 campsites. I seem to remember camping at a site the last time I took this trail that is not marked on the map though. We camped near a small pond that you can see if you zoom in that is right under the 2.2 on the map. I may be wrong on that, I honestly do not remember.

Regardless, a hike out to the lake is something we can do on Saturday, or Saturday night! Night hikes are cool!”

“The new trail is part of the HNF, but not the Deam Wilderness. The Pate Hollow trailhead is at the Paynetown State Rec Area parking lot. It was kind of a joint venture between the Forest Service and the state DNR. You can find the map at the HNF link above. Make sure you only camp on Forest Service land. Backcountry camping is not allowed on state land at that site, and Paynetown is the regional HQ for the Conservation Police.”

“I want to hike the route that is posted on the trip page. It has been a few years since I have, and I miss it. We can take a night hike down the peninsula trail and check out the lake or whatever.

If we are up to it, we can dayhike a section of the Pate Hollow trail on Sunday.”

“WK - If I can go, I'd be agreeable to any itinerary. I just wouldn't want to spend a night in Camp Spider....lol”

“I would indeed love to bring the Mugster. When the topic of the Peninsula came up I had some ugly flashbacks from last year. Mugsy found a "trophy" that a boater has left at the campsite and just HAD to roll around in it.

“LOL @ chin...do you have a lab?...i have a part lab and have the exact same problem with her...she once rolled on(or should i say in) a opossum that had been dead about 3 weeks...she stood up and shuck and slim went everywhere...i was tempted to make her run along side the car back home...she'll be coming on the trip and maybe my beagle mix too.”

“I used to have the same tent, and I still have the same boots (asolo's right?), but my dog is not that dog, either. Cute dog! I love how he sits all spread legged!”

“He wasn't even 1 in that picture and we have worked on posture since then.....heheh I love those Asolo boots and the Clip Flashlight has been good to me.

“WK, i've been keeping an eye on that trip...some people going that i'd like to meet...it kinda depends on the weather, i'm a cold weather baby though weather.com says averages in november for there are still in the 70's”

“They weather down there this summer has been VERY hot. I think the temps will be very comfortable. I made it at the beginning of NOV so we could comfortabe, not freezing weather.”

“Yeah, WK. It took no effort to get my friends to sign up. One is flying in from Duluth and the other is coming from Indy. The tips you gave me helped a lot because I came up with a backup plan in a few hours and we were still moving. So thanks!”
