Dobbins Slashing Bog, in the northwest corner of the Dolly Sods in the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia, was the last parcel of land in the Red Creek drainage that was not under public protection. As part of mitigation for using a wetlands in the Stony River drainage to the north as part of its mining operations, Buffalo Coal will turn over Dobbins Slashing to the state of West Virginia for a wildlife area. Press conference is tomorrow morning in Charleston.

Total acreage is 964.

Doesn't tha gubmint already have enough land?

No, not in my opinion, at least not in certain areas like anywhere east of the Rockies.

Details of this acquisition are sketchy at this point. Unknown is whether Buffalo donated surface title or both surface and mineral rights.
