People tend to hold overly favorable views of their abilities in many social and intellectual domains. The authors suggest that this overestimation occurs, in part, because people who are unskilled in these domains suffer a dual burden: Not only do these people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it. Across 4 studies, the authors found that participants scoring in the bottom quartile on tests of humor, grammar, and logic grossly overestimated their test performance and ability. Although their test scores put them in the 12th percentile, they estimated themselves to be in the 62nd. Several analyses linked this miscalibration to deficits in metacognitive skill, or the capacity to distinguish accuracy from error. Paradoxically, improving the skills of participants, and thus increasing their metacognitive competence, helped them recognize the limitations of their abilities.

That's another personal fault of you Phaedrus. You base the worth of your arguments on reaching a consensus. I've noticed that before about you and one other person. I have no desire what-so-ever to reach a consensus, or to win over anybody, or to convince anybody of anything. I am here to state facts. You can disagree with 100 of your facial haired beer bellied hippy friends right along your side and it doesn't phase me. That's why I continue to post no matter how many of you disagree with me. I'm not going to try to analyze why you have the need to do that, I'm not a doctor.

It usually works like this for you Phaedrus:

1. You criticize somebody who doesn't act like you.
2. They laugh back, at an attempt to win your favor. You appreciate their bowing down to you, and you become friends with them.

Sometimes, though, you'll find people like me who think you're not worth befriending. That conversation goes like this:

1. You criticize somebody who doesn't act like you.
2. They call you on it, and ask you to back your claim up.
3. You can't, so you go back to #1 with more force, hoping to bring in your friends on the act.
4. Your worthless friends see your need, and join in.
5. You all go back to #1 together.
6. They stand up to all of you.
7. All of you are forced to act even more like school-yard bullies to save face.

and on it goes ...

You have defined yourself, Phaedrus, on a false sense of importance. You've forgotten what it means to stand for something worthwhile. You've forgotten what it means to have friends who have real convictions, and don't base their convictions on how more pissed of they can get after the 5th beer than everyone else sitting around the porch.
