I'm new to backpacking so I am posting a question to the masses. Are there such things as Backpacking/vacations. For instance, have there ever been trips where a bunch of people go out into the back country for a few days, and then spend a day or so seeing a nearby city. For instance, I could see myself enjoying a trek in Nevada, and then spending a night or so in Vegas. Or what about Hawaii? Is this something that is done?

The New York Post today had a great article on train excursions. The one that caught my eye was a two day , one night from Vancouver to Banff national park in Canada. There were 10 trips highlighted. you should be able to get a copy at Borders. Hiking in Banff would be awesome.

That sounds pretty cool. I was just thinking that we had bateauxdriver up here and he got to see Philly for a few hours, which prompted my thought

These all sound fun. We should look at stuff like this. I few nights with few luxuries, and then one with normal luxuries in new places

There is so so so much more to the Seattle area than Mt Rainier! So much more.

I never even go down to Rainier! Why drive 2+ hours when I only have to drive 1?

Anyhoo, Ox, check out the trip pages. There are always trips going on and they are pretty much open to people who'd like to join. Just email the organizer and see if you can go with them. Or organize your own and post it there for people to join you.

You can pretty much pick any city you want and find neat stuff to do outdoors or pick a location you want and find a neat city nearby to explore. Pick your poison.

Gary Indiana!

Hiking the sand dunes and running from gang members you just flashed hand signals to.

LOL @ WK. My car broke down in Gary once. Only afterwards did someone tell me the Gary was the murder capital of the world.

Omaha is supposed to be nice in the fall. They have one of the biggest congregations of sand hill cranes in the world. See, anywhere can be cool.

It's always fun to plan a trip for a week or so in the backcountry with a day or two in town. One of my favorite destinations is Lake City Colorado. Right in the heart of the San Juan Mountains in a little valley hole with so many camping hiking and fishing opportunities that you can't get them all done in ten years let alone a week. This years adventure will be the Big Horn mountains for an entire week. Then the great metropolis of Buffalo Wyoming for a shower, hot food, and rest before the trip back.

For me town visits are a necessary evil on the way to and from my backpacking trips. I work in the city, and have no desire to spend any more time than I have to in any others. But the airports are usually near the cities, so we have to spend first and last nights there. This summer it was Vegas - hated it. Last year was Anchorage - a bit more interesting, but still noisy. The year before was Calgary - we were in and out as quickly as possible. I hate cities.
