WOOHOO!!! Only two more weeks and I'll be heading upp into the Cloud Peak Wilderness!! The yearly hike with an old school buddy is taking place in the Bighorns this year, we are highpointing Wyoming, (ok highpointing the Bighorn range anyway. Gannet is officially the highest peak) by ascending Cloud Peak. It's just a little over 13,000 feet.

Heading for a week into the wilderness, first on horses then on foot. Pack is almost ready, girlfriend is already wondering if I'm nuts due to the fact that I hike daily with a 40 pound pack, play frisbee golf with it on, etc etc. Hopefully final weight will be below 50. After summiting Cloud Peak we plan on visiting Bomber Mt the site of a WW2 B-17 bomber crash. Then trout fishing and hiking for the rest of the week.

LOL, I was gonna say I highpointed Albany County with my Laramie Peak hike but, CRIKEY!! The county is bigger than most eastern states and goes all the way to the Colorado border and includes taller peaks in the Snowy Range. (The Laramie and Snow ranges are both part of the Medicine Bow National Forest.)

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

LOL!

wow, that is awesome. Gannet is supposed to be one of the hardest peaks in the lower 48.

ENS, more reading, less hiking! :-P LOL, he said he was doing Cloud Peak and not Gannett, if I read his implications correctly. :-)

Gannet is the highest point in WY though, it's not a highpoint unless you bag the highpoint. How high is Cloud Peak compared to Gannet?

He's "highpointing Wyoming, (ok highpointing the Bighorn range )" with Cloud Peak.

HEY! That means I highpointed the Laramie Range, cuz I did the highest peak in it. cool-oh-mundo... LOL! :-)

Ya know there are people who highpoint counties, too. So the meaning has been expanded, I guess....

go to: www.summitpost.org
It's a great place to get elevations of mountains, get camping and route details and photos, and then log those summits! Cool website!

Gannet is 13,804, Cloud Peak is 13,167. Should be an awesome trip. I want to start highpointing but not this year, at least west of the Mississippi.

Gannett is the most remote of all U.S. highpoints, including Denali.

I tried to summit said peak, but Sarabelle couldn't reach the top of Bonnie Pass the day of attempt - the snowpack was too slippery. I left her on a rock with water and food and topped the pass. The sight of Gannett was mouthwatering, but I couldn't leave Belle behind for the additional length of time a summit woulda required.

Bonnie was a personal high point at that time, so I celebrated fittingly and returned to my girly. The reunion with her was even more celebratory.

I love the Winds...
