If you think that is a tribute you are a much smaller man than I thought.

techntrek - Get over it. It was a positive tribute. Take StoveStomper's advice and stop bashing me, take it to another thread, or better yet, get on with your life.

I like Mr Jennings when he was head of the London Branch and hold him in high regards.

I have no problems with a non-citizen broadcasting our news, after all it is world news. I doubt seriously that he contributed much to the script; so if he had a bias that was carried over from his childhood it wouldn't have been much of an issue.

I like that he proved to the world that through self study and determination that a formal education isn't always necessary.

I really look forward to seeing the news tonight and the coverage of his passing.

Bush: Jennings a Distinguished Journalist

The Associated Press
Monday, August 8, 2005; 11:16 AM

WACO, Texas -- President Bush remembered ABC anchorman Peter Jennings on Monday as a distinguished journalist who became a familiar face in millions of households.

"Laura and I were saddened to learn about the death of Peter Jennings," the president said. "Peter Jennings had a long and distinguished career as a news journalist. He covered many important events, events that helped define the world as we know it today.

"A lot of Americans relied upon Peter Jennings for their news. He became a part of the life of a lot of our fellow citizens, and he will be missed," Bush said. "May God bless his soul."

The president paused to talk about Jennings before boarding Air Force One for a trip to New Mexico to sign a major energy bill.

Jennings, 67, died of lung cancer at his home in New York on Sunday. He had been the anchorman of ABC's evening newscast for the past 22 years.

actual quote, please not that sarge left part of it off. Highlighted in bold

"You know when I started in this racket, to go off and save the world and tell the truth was a liberal instinct"

I kept the "liberal" part off as to keep it from appearing as if I was attacking his beliefs. Yes, the quote was worse than I made it out to be. I tried to be nice, as you can see. He did admit to having a liberal bias, but I was trying not to hammer the point too much.

I think Peter Jennings was a fine reporter, a kind and sincere man, and I am very sorry to learn of his death. May God be with his family and friends especially during this time of mourning.

Sarge misses no opotunity to show what sort of person he really is.

So you'd give up your American citizenship if you worked abroad for a number of years Sarge.

Whats wrong with the word liberal?

If you see how it is truely defined by an accredited source it is a rather nice adjective to have tied to you.

If you define it like knee-jerk political banter than all you are doing is using up oxygen when you speak.

It's a shame that our political system only has a few words that they like to use to describe each other. That is where colorful dialogue would be interesting

Difference between Jennings and Limbaugh is that Limbaugh never claimed to be objective nor did he try to keep up that appearance.

Its funny but I came to this site about a month or so ago looking on getting advice on getting back into a hobby I loved as a kid. There's about 10% packing talk and 90% BS politics or whatever. The irony is that those who are so infuriated at Sarge's comments on Jennings death are the same that would trip overthemselves in haste to lambast Bush or someone on the right who died of cancer.

Cmon, tell me I'm wrong hippies, I double dog dare ya.

Landser, if they did, then shame on them. Shame on anyone for slamming someone who dies before they are even lowered into the grave.

There is a time and a season for everything. You can still show respect for someone and their family and their supporters even if you don't agree with their stances when they were alive. It's one of the times we should come together in a respectful way before we go at each others throats again.

True, something we all forget from time to time. I've never been a big fan of any othe big 3 anchor guys, Rather, Brokaw, Jennings. But I will say this about Peter, he seemed to have a more even keel than the others? His presentation, voice, appearance was always the best it seemed to me? The man wasn't Staling, Hitler or Pol Pot. And I think, despite my disagreement with his politics the world is a lesser place w/o him.

btw Buck - You brought up lying versus murder. I believe strongly that Jenning's lies led enemies to pursue us with further gusto, causing deaths of our citizens and soldiers, much as Hitler's lies led his troops with lies. I don't make a big distinction, except that Jennings did it to people I know.

In all honesty, the Canadians do news better than Americans. And the British are better at presenting news as well.

I watch the National on CBC most nights. They actually still report news. And the BBC news on PBS and World Service on NPR are first rate.

Jennings' style was very much like Peter Mansbridge, Nolten Nash, Robert McNeil and other great Canadian newsmen.

It's getting to the point that no American COULD be objective in reporting the news. Everyone is on one side or another. Someone from another country can look more objectively at the situation.

The push for conservative purity is neverending. Even people like President Ford, Barry Goldwater and Sandra Day O'Connor were abandoned by the right wing. And they were "right wing" in their time.

Beloved centrists like Walter Cronkite, Ted Koppel and Peter Jennings were just troublesome roadblocks on the road to purity and power-driven uniformity.

I keep wondering whether Reagan would have been ostracized had he remained sentient longer. Or would he have been able to wrest some control over his movement? It's too bad he wasn't with us longer.

y2 - As Jennings himself said, the news is focusing on what the terrorists want them to, the casualties of our men overseas. There is much more going on over there that is good that if you were there would greatly outway the way Jennings and others portrayed it. Partly, they did it for ratings. Partly, they did it to make a point. Either way, it was not representative of what was happening. It was a mis-representation. It was/is a half-true, otherwise known as a lie. It's a lie that has resulted in American deaths.

So Sarge - the news ignored the election success, the opening of power stations, the return of children to schools?

You're a news editor in your local town. A varying number of car bombs go off on a daily basis, or a new sewage plant opens.

Where do you send your reporters?

Sarge, you are incorrect to believe that Americans are turning against the war because of American deaths.

We went three years with death rates that are roughly comparable to what we have now. And the poll numbers stayed at or above 51%.

The problem is that Shiites are starting to riot against a Shiite-dominated government, the Shiite leaders of Iraq are making nice with Iran, the Constitution looks like it will be a fundamentalist Islamic text and the Iraqis do not look likely to be able to take control of their country in the next 10 years. And the Iraqi oil industry looks like a mess.

It's actually quite insulting to think that a few pictures on the TV would cause patriotic Americans to cut-and-run. Americans are better than that.

But Americans don't like incompetence.
