I'd stay off of Kahoolawe, unless being blown to bits by UXO is your idea of a good time.

We dayhiked the KAUPO GAP TRAIL when we were there on our honeymoon. I have attached a list of trails below where you can start some research. Be careful on some of the waterfull hikes because rocks can get very slippery and people have been know to slip and fall.

does anybody else not have a problem with this being his/her first trip and him/her going alone?

unless you're going to someplace relatively easy and it's just for a night i would strongly recommend you take someone

if not make sure more than one person knows where you're going, when you are leaving and coming back and the exact route you are taking and do not stray from that route

take and know how to use a map and compass/gps system

And the locals are extremely protective of their "plants" so be careful on the trails...especially at night. By "plants", I mean "Mary Wanna". Some good sniper action was done a few times while I was there in 1985. Killed two guys.

How did he get lost with a GPS? Batteries run down? Or did he forget to note the location of his car?

Possible Leo. What is even more funny, I bet he did not know how to use it. A guy asked me directions while on the expressway, stuck in traffic. He said he was lost and thought that he missed his exit. I said yes and asked him if the extra large GPS unit attached to his dash worked. He said yea, sure, but he did not know how to use it.

Neither of thses two articles say anything about a GPS.

Hiker survived by wringing water from moss

Hiker survives five days in Hawaii lava field
