Also Lundy Canyon is close enough to the South Tufa area of Mono Lake. It too has great fall yellows and golds for the early morning photographer.

Well, if anyone's interested in doing a dayhike or overnighter to "the finest, most stately groves of quaking aspen on the Kern Plateau," aka Hooker Meadow in the South Sierra Wilderness, give me a shout. It'll be a short jaunt off of the Sherman Pass Road... I'm thinking of heading there the 2nd or 3rd weekend in September.

mmmmmmm, I'm going to take back my vote for Lundy as a back pack. I'd camp out there to get a sunrise shot of the valley, but it may not be the place for a group to spend 2 days..

I agree doug - it'll be a nice spot to stop and take some pictures, but not a great camping spot.

The Bishop area gets my vote now.

I'm watching. I still have a sore foot but fingers crossed some PT takes care of Plantar Faciaitis. Is somebody looking for a group campsite around Bishop?

The trip could be a group car camp with day hikes - the aspens are down low anyway

I'm leaning toward car camping. That way Mrs. Navi can come along too, and see JVZ and Ladyhiker again and meet some of new people too.

I think car camping would be nice too because more people could come. Maybe even Hikin Mike will come if we car camp??

What does everyone else think about car camping?

Here's a list of campgrounds:

The Table Mountain group site was nice when we used it for the South Lk. to North Lk. Trip.
It has LOTS of room for tents, right on the creek, a private restroom/out house and room for 6 or 8 cars. As I recall the only water was the creek as in "not piped in".
On the downside, it was $100 a night.

What about one of the free BLM camgrounds like Horton Creek

Car Camping would be a good way to go, but reserving a camp site might be tricky. I called on a few things, Table Mountain is booked 9/24, 10/1, 10/8, even Four Jeffrey is booked 10/1. The only group camp I could find was Bishop Park 9/24.

Isn't there a BLM campground near Crowley Lake?

The BLM site is down.

Rock Creek Group Walk-in (I don't think it's much of a walk) looks like it's available for September 30 - October 1. It's on Rock Creek Lake at about 9,000 feet. That's a very pretty area in the fall. It would cost $90 for the two nights.

Rock Creek is sounding good and Sept. 30 is good timing. I’d rather be up high than the lower elevation options.

We'll (Navi & Mrs. Navi) go along with Rock Creek. Tom's Place has a GOOD breakfast.

Car Camping!!!
Great idea! Since I've been able to get myself on the ground, I'll be able to car camp. I could bring Mrs. Hikin' Mike and my two kids also.

Last year at Rock Creek, I checked out some campsites on a little hill right on the lake. The only thing I see listed for Rock Creek Lake is a group camp. If that’s the spot, it’s a very short walk-in and a really nice place to camp with a view of the lake. Rock Creek Lodge puts on a really great dinner.
I think we should book this soon before it gets taken.

Looks like there are 2 walk in campsites at Rock Creek Lake, the one I was talking about is on the east side, the group camp is on the west side, so haven’t seen it but still sounds good, I’m in.
Here is some info, not sure of the walking distance the map is not very detailed.

The walk shouldn't be a big deal anyway. If my family can't make it, I'm sure some of you nice TT'rs will be able to help me unload and set up camp! :)

For all the lurid details http://www.thebackpacker.com/trailtalk/thread/39755,3.php

Moleskin works on dislocated shoulders, must work on breaks.

thanks navi! har har har...you're so funny....I'll try that but I have a feeling it won't help. :)

hey ladyhiker, I was just writing to you! You can read all about my mishap on the thread I started right after I got home from my fall. The thread is simply named, " I just sprained my ankle..or is it broke?"

ladyhiker, remember that really nice bottle of wine that I bought you in leiu of the Mt Whitney permit? Well, I was waiting all this time for when I saw you next but knew that I wouldn't be seeing you for a while now so I.........ummm......drank it last night with my sister! Can you email me your address and I'll mail you the $15? BTW, it was excellent. It was BV 2001 Merlo....quite tasty.

Do we have enough people for a group site?

I'd hate to reserve the site and then have it empty.

Unless I take a backwards turn, you can count me in. I'm considering taking my wife and two kids also. I don't know how successful that will be. Having a 7 & 4 year-old in a car for 5+ hours may be trying!

Can you Kathy? How much is it? Is it cheaper to get a few small sites, or should we get the group site? I can give you some $$ when I see you on the 26th. E mail me.

Trip Sign Up
Okay - the site is reserved for September 30th and October 1st. It sounds like it right next to the lake and close to a parking lot. The reservation site says that one vehicle is allowed and the rest park in the adjacent parking lot and walk in to the sites. Up to 25 people are allowed.

I'm going to put the trip on the trips page, so sign up.

The restaurant, showers, and store at rock creek resort are are 1/4 mile away from the group site. It sounds like the group site is on or really close to the lake.
