Fall Colors in the Sierra

“so, is there going to be a weekend TT trip to enjoy the fall colors in the Sierra?”

“Sounds good! When and where?”

“Yeah...I wanna go.”

“Late season trips are the best..There is just something peaceful about the Sierra's in the Fall. Plus you end up having the place to yourself which is great...I'd go, but I have a bay due in 2 weeks so I don't think the old lady would go for it.. I'd suggest Blaney Hot Springs just up from Florence lake on the San Joaquin creek..We were there late August a few seasons back..It was great the Poplars were changing..So laid back and relaxing..The one time I was glad I wasn't wearing my glasses was when those large German ladies were in the hot springs sans clothes..whew”

“Got a call from her this afternoon. She's at Red's Meadow. Having a good trip I think. There's some strong personalities in her group. Good stories ahead, especially about some naked guy facing off with a bear for rights to a brownie. Not my story to tell.”

“Last year the colors were pretty at the very end of September and in the very beginning of October in the Bishop area, but every year and every area is different.

What about the weekend of September 30 - October 2? Can anyone do that weekend? We could set it up so that it would work for those wanting to do a 2 day trip and those who want a 3 day trip.

What about the location?

“Karen and I are a probably. Have to confirm after the JMT. We do have a trip to Widbey Island sometime in October planned. Our first date/backpack was in the fall of 78. Got hit hard by hurricane Norman.”

“Just an old friends get together. Happens every year either in Ca or Wa.”

“What about hiking over Virginia Pass in NW Yosemite, or going over Piute Pass into Desolation Lake or somewhere in Humphrys Basin? or hiking from Devils Postpile down to Iva Bell Hot Spring (1st night), then to Purple Lake (2nd night), then out. The road should be open the last week of September.

What about South Lake area to one of the upper lakes, the one on the way to Tyee Lakes - can't think of the name - oh wait - is it George?? Or Tyee the longer way is pretty....”

Hikerchic is talking about a Desolation Wilderness hike in October too... This sounds like the beginnings of a fun weekend!”

Lots of Aspens puts us a bit lower.

“I've done McGee in the fall and very colorful. South Lake/Lake Sabrina area is really colorful too. How about the Mammoth area - which trails up there have lots of aspens?

I'm up for any area with lots of reds and yellows.”

“remember green creek as very colorful & I have heard that Lundy canyon is supposed to be very beautiful with fall colors.”

Yeah, where is Lundy?”

“If I recall right, most of the aspens in the Rock Creek area are along the road and you loose them when you head up to Mono Pass. Maybe the trail to through Little Lakes Valley is the best one for fall colors in that area.

Do the colors come earlier as you go further north?”

“Lundy Canyon is south of Conway Summit (Virgina Lakes, Bridgeport) and north of Lee Vining (North end of Mono Lake.”

Green creek is a bit south of Bridgeport off of 395. Im wondering if the fall colors are going to be either early or later this year because of the heavy winter we had, and then a lot of very warm days..don't know if that will affect the trees?”

“Maybe we can have two possible locations - one in the Bishop area and a second further north? Then as the time gets closer we can go to the one that looks like it'll have better color?”

“madein, the fall color is caused by the temps in the fall. The previous seasons shouldn't have an effect.
At least that's the way I understand it.”
