y2 - What is your point? (since you decided not to take my advice ...)

y2 is right, people who work for the public should be a bit more respectful of the people the serve.

Who are you referring to MarkO?

(hint for the sheeple: Geo has speculated what I do for a living, but I did not correct him.)

Sarge, I'm referring to people who work for the public.

You can read anything you want into that.

The visor is powerful, but lately, I've been wearing a bandana to negotiations, just to mix things up a little.

Nigal is right about our system of funding education here in Ohio, it's screwed up. Unfortuantely, the heavily dominated republican leadership in the state refuses to abide by the Ohio Supreme Court's decision to create legislation that will fix the problem. They like the current program because the wealthier communities are getting along much better than the poorer ones. Plus, the current plan fits in nicely with thier public tax ideology.

As for unions, and Birch & Baumee's comments, I'll say this: I held a similar attitude toward them (unions) until about a year after I took this job. Prior to taking the job, I recieved a degree in Labor History, and was reared in a union household. The unions came to be as a check and balance against capitalism. I think we had a nice balance going in from the 40's-60's, and then a few cases of union members began to abuse the laws meant to protect them, much like the corp's abused laws prior to unionization. The reult: abuse of power, and a diminished public image through the 70's-80's. Then Reagan fired the air traffic controllers in 82 (?). This was devestating to unions for it set a legal precendent as to what could happen to striking union members in a private workforce. Prior to the incident, if a union member went on strike in the private or public sector, the employer could not permenantly replace the employee. Once Reagan did his deed, now private corp's could permenantly replace the striking employee, hence the massive erosion of union members in the private sector from that point until now. Currently, there is no precedent set in replacing public striking employees, which is why unions are strongest in the public sector.

This event woke up many unions, and cuased some, like the one I work for to be more progressive in our tactics. For example, I have set up a conference in which the union presidents and school superintendents & treasurers of 18 local school districts will attend to discuss alternatives to our healthcare situation here in Ohio. We are working with management to save them money, and keep our employees covered in insurance, while ultimately saving tax dollars for residents. The loser in this scenario are healthcare companies, for our proposal will cut into thier massive profits. These are some of the progressive things that unions are doing to create a win-win situation for everybody (except the greediest).

I think unions are needed as much as they were at the beginning of the industrial revolution because we are reverting back to those days. As companies gain more and more power due to lack of regulation, alll the rights that unions won for people, or that were gained due to the threat of unions are rapidly eroding. Now, families need two wage earners to make ends meet, people work weekends, work over 40 hours without overtime, are not receieving healthcare, don't have pensions, etc., etc. A great example is a person like Joe, who works hard, yet feels he can't make more because his union won't allow non-senior employees to make as much as senior employees. In a non-union atmosphere, a hard working guy like Joe can get fired if he is percieved as a threat to a slacker boss, or if he's been there awhile, and is making too much money, they'll can him because he's making too much money. Things like this happen frequently in a non-union environment.

Buddha, is your bandana blue or red??

That is all well-reasoned and civil, Buddha.

Someone here has mis-characterized you is a rather mean-spirited way.

Thanks Mark. My bandana is blue, of course. And I actually did wear it in negotiations once, just to make management flip out. It was pretty funny. My folks loved it.

Our small independent union will most likely do well for us in the coming year. Haven't had a contract in years. Replaced most of our union officials & pay our respected law firm millions. Everyone (incl the "other" side) & other depts, expects us to have a decent new contract by spring.

No wonder you didn't last long in leadership.

a.) you're not a leader
b.) you don't get it

Maybe you should take the advice of your republican cronies and get another job. Whining really becomes you Birch.

Jay, why the personal attack?

"No wonder you didnt last long in leadership."

This last jab doesnt even make since since I am still in leadership and will be for 14 more months.

No need for another job. I love my job am well respected and appreciated. Plus in 14 years I can walk away and retire at age 46. I can tolerate anything for 14years.

Sass - You don't know what you're talking about. It REALLY is getting old. You make your way into other conversations (you probably hadn't even seen 90% of the discussions I've been involved in which has led to various language being used) and you think you know me. Of the two of us, YOU are the one who initiated hateful speech. Ironically, YOU are the one who told me to act like a Christian. You really need to stop thinking you are something you are not.

mapleleaf - What are you talking about?

It should be me? Not Sass?

You're going to give her a free pass ... why?

It's called "double standard".

If she is bating me, then she's not acting Christian, which is her complaint of me. She won't admit it, because she's a hypocrite.

regardless ... double standard

PS - moving on is when you forget the past ... she keeps bringing it up, which puts it in the present - I do "move on" until it comes up fresh again. It's interesting how you can tell me to "move on", but you don't think it's necessary to tell that to her. I have no reason to think you're being objective.

"As for unions, and Birch & Baumee's comments, I'll say this: I held a similar attitude toward them (unions) until about a year after I took this job."

Why did you take a job as an advocate, advisor and chief spokesperson for a group of people that you felt this way about and continued to feel this way for the first year?

Not trash, truth. His post sounded and looked much like your posts. If you don't like the truth change the way you post. It wasn't an insult Sarge, just an observation. Even crash, by biggest critic, has said that I don't start the arguments. His point was people (like you) don't remember who started it and so I end up looking like the bad guy even though somebody else started it.

You're wrong MarkO.
