I speak a smattering of German, enough Spanish to get my face slapped, but I also speak Jive, Redneck, and I am thinking of learning Esperanto... LOL....” 9:00:07 AM 2/23/06 “Latin, Spanish, Russian. Not fluent in any of them, but I come closest in Spanish, where, if I had to, I could probably get directions to my hotel, or order a meal. I understand about a third of spoken Spanish.” 9:03:27 AM 2/23/06 “Chipperwa.” 9:10:02 AM 2/23/06 “anybody know anything about the TESOL certification? is it a good cert? widely accepted for employment in the US? as good as CELTA and other certs? im thinking about taking the TESOL course in london, ontario.” 3:19:25 PM 4/04/06 “off to canada ... twas only a matter of time ...” 5:44:55 PM 4/04/06 “Cool! I've always wanted to be in canada- I say go for it. It couldnt hurt StormBringer.” 5:54:41 PM 4/04/06 In my humble opinion... “I would have gone with TESOL, but my experiences are abroad--not stateside. Pasted from www.tesolonline.com, you might want to consider these: 5. Where can I work with a TESOL / TEFL certificate? Pretty much anywhere in the world where English isn't the native language (and even some where it is!). See our job opportunities page for information on job prospects country by country. ****************************** There is a huge demand for teaching English in the USA. While in most countries of the world business and 'academy' type English is most common, in North America the emphasis is more on ESL (English as a Second Language). Just about every university and college in major cities has an ESL program, as do a variety of government and charitable organizations. Although the demand for ESL teachers is enormous, it is extremely difficult for non-US citizens who do not have a 'green card' to get a working visa. Therefore the majority of positions are filled by local citizens, usually on a part-time basis. ESL teaching is not particularly well-paid in comparison to the cost of living and hourly rates of $30 dollars are the norm. *************************** Pasted from CELTA's website: There are usually plenty of part time and temporary TEFL jobs in language schools in the USA, particularly in the summer. In some areas, there are also part-time positions with local ESL programs for immigrants. However, it is more difficult to find full-time, long term positions, unless you already have some teaching experience. You've already got the bachelors in English. I'd personally suggest going for secondary language arts licensure and ESL endorsement. (In most states, it takes only about an additional 18 hours for teacher licensure.) That way you have a license instead of a certificate! What you do for employment with or without that license is your choice, but you would go into it with some teaching experience (student teaching) which, I think, would help you in the long run by giving you more credibility and versatility. All of that said, remember that the MA in TESOL was only my second choice! ;)” 6:45:23 PM 4/04/06 “i should add that the reason im considering the tesol in london and the celta in toronto is that the tuition fees are considerably less than in the US. i also got an offer for free room and board if i take the classes in london” 8:57:54 PM 4/04/06 “Free is good! TESOL is the American standard, whereas CELTA is the British standard. If you goal is to work in the US, I'd go TESOL. Also, along the lines of flexibility, TESOL is for students of all ages, whereas CELTA is adult specific. Maybe this link will help you. http://www.windsorinstitute.com/tesol-versus-celta.html” 9:31:14 PM 4/04/06 This is my field. 11:26:43 AM 4/07/06 “What's the French word for "eh?"” 11:29:06 AM 4/07/06 “going up to london, ontario to check out the school this weekend woohoo!” 3:57:54 PM 4/26/06 “just sent in deposit for ace tesol certificate course starting july 3rd. boy, am i geeked for this!” 3:28:05 PM 5/21/06 “Da-doo-ron-ron-ron, da-doo-ron-rooonnnnn...” 4:39:38 PM 5/21/06 “i leave for ontario in 2 days. class starts tuesday. my smashed finger at the start of the week put a damper on my mood for awhile, butim starting to get excited again whoop!” 11:57:25 AM 6/30/06 “class starts Tues July 4th!!! damn Canadians...you ought to boycott class that day” 12:01:51 PM 6/30/06 “haha its delayed one day for THEIR independence day” 12:15:22 PM 6/30/06 “have fun! I have a friend who will start teaching ESL this fall - she is looking forward to it. My brother's SO is from France. When they don't want the rest of us to know what they are talking about, they speak French to each other. I equate that right up there with whispering, which I don't allow my kids to do since it's rude. I've always wanted to learn French, but it'd be even better to learn on the QT - especially when her family comes to visit...LOL...” 12:17:19 PM 6/30/06 “lol, Twigeater. I'd do it. I want to learn Spanish. There's so many people around here who speak it and there's bound to be more coming. Thinking about tryin to learn it as a family. Not sure how cooperative Birch will be. Good luck, study hard.” 12:40:20 PM 6/30/06 “My native language was 'Hippieout', but I'd like to learn 'English' too-to-two,but can't-can not-cannot figure what for-four-fore.” 12:57:22 PM 6/30/06 “A professor here is raising her four kids with Spanish and English. When the twin girls were about three she was telling one of them off in English and used the phrase, "no, no, no..." The little girl replied, "si, si, si..." Imagine arguing with a three year old in two languages?” 1:00:06 PM 6/30/06 “first lesson plan coming along nicely. im really excited about it” 10:08:12 AM 7/13/06 “Cool...so what language is going to be most of your students' first language, do you think? Do you have to speak other languages besides English?” 10:16:27 AM 7/13/06 “does speaking with a fake british accent count?” 10:17:32 AM 7/13/06 “Oh, no doubt!” 10:22:38 AM 7/13/06 “Good luck Crash. I'm sure you'll be a good teacher. I do think you should teach them so they come out with a southern accent though. Very interesting, and i am sure a huge feeling of accomplishment. I wish I would remember their name.” 7:09:37 PM 7/13/06 “Crash Bang, you have mail. My daughter has her last exam on the 29th. Her degree is in English Lit. and Media Studies. She plans to go and teach ESL in Korea for a year. I told her I could get her an ESL job at my school board to-morrow. They have expanded the ESL programme and this is on top of an already critical shortage of teachers here in Quebec. She said maybe next year (daddy sighs).” 10:48:14 AM 7/15/06 grem “i dont speak french or id ask if i could have her spot” 11:10:48 AM 7/15/06 “btw, my first lesson plan and microteaching (where we demonstrate the relevant part of our lesson plan to the instructor) went very well. 5 out of 5 marks.” 11:17:06 AM 7/15/06 “Nice going, Crash Bang.” 12:52:30 PM 7/15/06 “Cool CB, maybe you can help me.
