Much like the metric system...if the rest of the world is out of step with us....who cares (LOL). I speak a smattering of German, enough Spanish to get my face slapped, but I also speak Jive, Redneck, and I am thinking of learning Esperanto...
LOL....

Latin, Spanish, Russian. Not fluent in any of them, but I come closest in Spanish, where, if I had to, I could probably get directions to my hotel, or order a meal. I understand about a third of spoken Spanish.

In my humble opinion...
I would have gone with TESOL, but my experiences are abroad--not stateside.

Pasted from www.tesolonline.com, you might want to consider these:

5. Where can I work with a TESOL / TEFL certificate?

Pretty much anywhere in the world where English isn't the native language (and even some where it is!). See our job opportunities page for information on job prospects country by country.

******************************

There is a huge demand for teaching English in the USA. While in most countries of the world business and 'academy' type English is most common, in North America the emphasis is more on ESL (English as a Second Language). Just about every university and college in major cities has an ESL program, as do a variety of government and charitable organizations.
Although the demand for ESL teachers is enormous, it is extremely difficult for non-US citizens who do not have a 'green card' to get a working visa. Therefore the majority of positions are filled by local citizens, usually on a part-time basis. ESL teaching is not particularly well-paid in comparison to the cost of living and hourly rates of $30 dollars are the norm.

***************************

Pasted from CELTA's website:

There are usually plenty of part time and temporary TEFL jobs in language schools in the USA, particularly in the summer. In some areas, there are also part-time positions with local ESL programs for immigrants. However, it is more difficult to find full-time, long term positions, unless you already have some teaching experience.

You've already got the bachelors in English. I'd personally suggest going for secondary language arts licensure and ESL endorsement. (In most states, it takes only about an additional 18 hours for teacher licensure.) That way you have a license instead of a certificate! What you do for employment with or without that license is your choice, but you would go into it with some teaching experience (student teaching) which, I think, would help you in the long run by giving you more credibility and versatility.

All of that said, remember that the MA in TESOL was only my second choice! ;)

i should add that the reason im considering the tesol in london and the celta in toronto is that the tuition fees are considerably less than in the US. i also got an offer for free room and board if i take the classes in london

Free is good!

TESOL is the American standard, whereas CELTA is the British standard. If you goal is to work in the US, I'd go TESOL. Also, along the lines of flexibility, TESOL is for students of all ages, whereas CELTA is adult specific.

Maybe this link will help you.

have fun! I have a friend who will start teaching ESL this fall - she is looking forward to it.

My brother's SO is from France. When they don't want the rest of us to know what they are talking about, they speak French to each other. I equate that right up there with whispering, which I don't allow my kids to do since it's rude.

I've always wanted to learn French, but it'd be even better to learn on the QT - especially when her family comes to visit...LOL...

I want to learn Spanish. There's so many people around here who speak it and there's bound to be more coming. Thinking about tryin to learn it as a family. Not sure how cooperative Birch will be.

Crash, I'm glad you're going now. Good luck, study hard.

A professor here is raising her four kids with Spanish and English.

When the twin girls were about three she was telling one of them off in English and used the phrase, "no, no, no..."

The little girl replied, "si, si, si..."

Imagine arguing with a three year old in two languages?

I did some design work for a company that helped people becoming english teachers in 3rd world countries. Very interesting, and i am sure a huge feeling of accomplishment.

I wish I would remember their name.

Crash Bang, you have mail.

My daughter has her last exam on the 29th. Her degree is in English Lit. and Media Studies. She plans to go and teach ESL in Korea for a year. I told her I could get her an ESL job at my school board to-morrow. They have expanded the ESL programme and this is on top of an already critical shortage of teachers here in Quebec.

She said maybe next year (daddy sighs).

A few of my friends did this. One taught English in Russia for a few years, then in Saudi for a year. Another went to South Korea and has ended up marrying and staying there. Once you get some experience then there's many places it can take you.

I myself came here teaching Americans how to speak 'English' ;o)
