yeah I thought about the rodents being able to chew into the protein canister too. Its hangable, guess I'll see how it goes the first night. I'll sleep light, listening for them knawing away, get up and yell at them like they were bears!

I've taken protein canisters into the Canyon 5 or 6 times, I don't hang them, and I've never had a rodent chew on them. That's no guarantee that they won't or can't, but I've never had problems.

didya know the hermit trail is classified as one of the steepest & hardest trails in the canyon?
isn't that on your route up Crash?”

I certainly haven't come close to doing all the trails in the Canyon, but I don't find the Hermit much harder really than the SK or BA. It's got some really nice fairly level stretches on it, which kind of make up for the steep parts. It's also got that great resthouse at Maria Spring. There ARE a few spots where rockslides have made the trail a bit hard to follow and slow you down, but you can generally see where the trail comes out again, and they aren't terribly long. Mostly you can see where everyone else has gone through. Don't forget to look for the fossil animal tracks!

cool! can you say whereabouts? that's something i'm interested in seeing!

it's nice to know that the chosen route isn't as bad as i've been reading... actually it doesn't really rate as the worst, i was just kidding, but i did note that it is a nasty uphill slog. yipee!

it's in the series of rip-rap switchbacks in the upper part of the trail. They are right next to the trail. Much better than I can describe it, along with a great description of the whole Hermit Trail, is in Bob Ribokas' Hermit Trail description. A site packed with good Grand Canyon hiking information. I used to know which switchback number, but I forget now. I always count switchbacks, and then forget how many!!

Preferably something that is agreeable with the bod the next day. Pasta and chicken maybe. I assume were getting to Mather mid afternoon. Much later than that it could be a pain to set up camp and cook.
Crash, I'm sending the DVD back to you unless you don’t want it, in that case I'll keep it.

Crash,

I should be at the GC Sunday afternoon the 5th. Where should I meet you? Do you have a specific campsite number reserved at Mather? Keep an eye out for a blue honda civic with a roof rack and CA plates.

I did my food planning this afternoon. Going shopping for a few food items tonight. I am probably packing too many calories per day but what the hell.
Jimmy san

2/26/06

i ended up with about 13600 calories and about 8 pounds. you?
Crash Bang
4:47:23 PM
2/26/06

My spreadsheet came out at 4006 calories/day @ 5 days = 20,000 calories. I probably don't need that much. I'll weight it soon. I was shooting for just under 2 lbs/day so less than 10 lbs total. It's all no-cook food.
Jimmy san
7:03:20 PM
2/26/06

I'm about 12,000 calories @ 7 pounds. 2,300 per day usually ties me over for a couple weeks of hiking without weight loss. I wouldn't even be able to stomach 4,000 cal/day.

I posted my packing list at:
http://www.stiglu.com/temp/JasonsPackingList.htm
I'm expecting it to be around 25 pounds with food and 2 quarts water.

Can't wait, I'm pumped!

9 lbs but like i said i just made about 2x too much gorp. i'll be packing some time this week, work permitting.

I'm going to bring my 5 degree bag and big down jacket for Sunday night on the rim and leave them in my car. It looks like it will probably be in the teens.
