“Is there a bail out trail, if I wanted to leave sometime on sunday ? I cant stay for the whole thing, but would like to do some of that trail.”

“There are a few road crossings and a cross connector trail that cuts the loop in half-ish. We could figure something out.”

“I believe there would be lots of options. A major road separates the trail in 2 halves and there are plenty of other dirt roads. I'm giving some thought to going on this hike too.”

“Game plan ? Which way ? Starting point, etc..... I looked in Jmitch's book, looks like 144 crosses 3 times. I didnt see any other bail out roads or trails, just alot of water!!
I'm looking at a friday night or saturday am start. I dont mind night hiking to where ever the first nights camp site is.

How long can you be out for? There are a bunch of road crossings on my map we can use for a bail out.”

“Going that way crosses some dirt roads, one is after climbing out of Fish Dam. There is another going into Yost Run.”

“Coming out of Fish Dam is "Jews Run Road", theres the Branch Trail there which connects back to 144. The next one down is Fisher Fire Road which meets 144 between Bloody Run and Sowot camps.

Along Burns or Yost Run would do for Friday nights camp. I'm favoring Yost Run right now.”

“Jmitch emailed me back.. The trailhead on 144 is the big lot where the cross connector and both loops meet. 7 miles or so south of Renovo on 144.

Anyone else coming out for only a couple days? Maybe some car shuttling can be set up?”

“I'm probably going to do part of this. I have to see when I get back from St. Louis in two weeks.

I'm going to need a good backpacking trip after 2 weeks of handling claims with out a day off.

i prefer the west loop over the east loop.”

Same here, Rich. I saw ya on the OLP but we haven't hiked together since New Year's Day on the Golden Eagle.

Spindlette - I haven't seen you in ages as well. Oh wait, I've NEVER seen ya, and you love closer to me than any hiker I know. What's up with that?

I'm gonna try and make this trip. I'd like to do the whole trail. Hopefully, I can get Fri and Mon off. Tuesday would be a stretch but you plan on finishing the hike on Monday, right?”

“I'm not going to be able to get there until Friday night. I want to make this trip. I will somehow try and hike in and find you guys.”

“I'll be a friday nighter too. Build a big fire.”

“Pennsy, it's been a long time. I'm expecting to get out more now that my hip is healed enough to backpack again. It's been a lousy summer with this injury, no mountain biking, no backpacking and just easy walks and short hikes. I'm hoping to make the CKT.”

“I've just returned to Florida from hiking the Appalachian Forest area for a week - great break from the heat, humidity and development. I'm planning to hike more frequently in PA in the future; please keep me on your mailing list if you will!

If I go, and it's looking pretty dang good that I will, I'll want to do the whole trail. Is the plan to hike 4 full days, Fri thru Mon?

you'll be able to sleep 10-12 hours each night on the trip, ENS. What more could you ask for?”

“The eastern loop has one of the nicest ravines I ever hiked through. This was one of the first trails that I hiked in the midstate area. I came in late and could hardly find the trail so I camped in the clearing for the columbia gass line and then found it the next day. It was quite a while ago, but in the beginning I went through the bogs and after that if I remember correctly there was only one area in the East that was cleared but I think that was from fire, I remember it still being a bit black in places. Then it became hard to follow the trail in a few places because at times it wasn't marked well and it cut across some peoples land. Once across the private land and over the hill came the ravine. I remeber it being park like down by the stream. There was a bend in the stream and beautiful place to camp, but unfortunately I kept marching on and stayed much further up creek where it became a small stream and alomost ended.

I really wasn't to impressed with the west loop because much of the trail went through the area that was devistated. At least it seemed like that because it was very low lying brush. All the trees were gone.

When did they relocate the western loop of the trail?”

“I think they relocated West loop in at least one spot near Fish Dam right after the tornado went through.”

“I went fly fishing near Boiling Springs a few years ago on the famous Yellow Breeches Creek for the September White fly hatch. It was a nice area.
