They are now evaculating the Superdome because the roof is leaking and they fear it may collapse.

The dome has been with out power and AIR CONDITIONING for a few hours now.”

the latest report says nothing about evaculating the Superdome.

"NEW ORLEANS - Hurricane Katrina ripped away part of the roof on the Louisiana Superdome as thousands of storm refugees huddled inside Monday.

Strips of metal were peeled away, creating two holes that were visible from the floor of the huge arena. Water dripped in and people were moved away from about five sections of seats directly below.

Others watched as sheets of metal flapped visibly and noisily. From the floor, more than 19 stories below the dome, the openings appeared to be 6 feet long.

"The superdome is not in any dangerous situation," Gov. Kathleen Blanco said.

General Manager Glenn Menard said he did not know how serious the problem was. "We have no way of getting anyone up there to look," he said."

I hope they have a plan when the rest of the roof goes.

Not looking good at the Superdome.

Yikes, our own real life freakin' disaster movie!

And about the barges, etc and grain harvest. Wow, hadn't thought of that. But should of. Lord knows I live in the heartland, where train cars, semi trailers and barges are all laden with grain -- and the Mississippi just an hour away.

So that could really hit all our area farmers!

I called the radio station that reported the evacuation and said I cannot find this information anywhere. They appoligized and said it was a slip of the tongue.

Nice.

Lizs, the upper midwest has enough grain storage to hold this years harvest.

Shipping will be slow down the Mississippi to the Port in New Orleans for quite some time. Fortunately, the rail lines can pick up the slack and move grain to other ports. At Memphis, the Mississippi River has been so low that barge traffic has been minimal anyway. They won't have to worry about that for long. All the rain that hits the Tennessee River and Ohio River Valley in the next few days will find its way downstream.

An amazing phone call just aired on The Weather Channel a few minutes ago from Jim Cantore's producer, Simon Temperton. The two of them are at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport, Miss. (current conditions), where they have sought refuge from rapidly rising floodwaters on the second floor along with 300-400 residents of the home.

Here's some of what Simon reported in his phone call:

"We're going through some unbelievable conditions. Water is seeping into the building. I'd say we've had at least a 20-feet [of] storm surge. It has washed away all our rental cars, and everything else [in the parking lot]...

"Now water is seeping into the home and they are evacuating everyone to the second floor. I'm standing in 5 or 6 inches of water [on the second floor]. The power is out. There are a few emergency lights. It's a very daunting prospect right now....

"It's a very dangerous situation. I've been doing this for 15 years, and [I've] been Mr. Cantore's producer for many hurricanes, and I've never seen anything like this. This is probably the scariest situation we've ever been in -- just the sudden rise of water and how fast. They said we were good here for 27, 30 feet [of storm surge] -- they've never seen anything like it. They thought we were completely safe.

"We're not even shooting [video] anymore. We're basically in self-preservation [mode] right now. We're helping people put up boards and sandbags to keep the water from coming in. We've become part of the crew.

"In the time we've been talking, the water has risen, I'd say, another 3 inches. It's up to the top of my boots. The water keeps rising."

Exactly, Mark - all the trouble is located in one small part of the country, while pretty much the rest of the country is going smoothly! but you don't hear the media report that, now do you?!?!?

Right! So what New Orleans washed out to sea? We can always hold Mardi Gras in Vegas.
Geobeet

Mobile has a smaller and less-well-known Mardi Gras celebration every year as well. They also have a nice deep-water port that can be reached from the Mississippi via the Tennessee-Tombigbee waterway, although I doubt if it can handle more than a small fraction of the shipping that the Port of Southern Louisiana does.

Yeah, I guess linking to the Red Cross donation page was a bad thing.

Last night Cantore was saying they expected they might have film of water on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home. Apparantly the place is built like a brick #&%!$ house so they figured they'd be safe. If the first floor is submerged, things are pretty grim for the entire area.

The very worst should be over in New Orleans now. The eye is about a hundred miles inland in Mississippi and still showing up clearly in satellite shots.

Still rain and gusts in NO, likely.

Quote from an AP reporter in New Orleans:

"It's blustery. You can see the speed of it now, it's unbelievable," he said. "The power went out about an hour and a half ago and so now I'm just watching the occasional dumbass walking down Canal Street."

Nice quote, IJ! After one of the storms last year (I forget which one there were so many!) HPM and I were some of the dumbasses driving around in the pitch black at 5 am. We couldn't sleep because of the noise, there was a large tree branch hanging over my car, there was no power in the house so we decided to sit in the ait conditioned car that was moved from harm's way. :)

We'd look around town, and what looked like big bolts of lightning was actually segments of the power grid being destroyed. It was like watching a Godzilla movie.

reflecting on this, the selfish dumbasses who COULD have evacuated but didnt because of "this is my home im not leaving it" or "im relying on the superdome to save me" kind of piss me off. theyre just adding to the misery of people who had no other option and are trapped in squalid conditions for the next several days or weeks, and making things more difficult for rescue squads, emergency relief, etc
