Fall colors in the GSMNP
Newfound Gap to Deep Creek Ranger Station, Oct. 14-17th...Gotta go!

Fall colors with ridge top hiking. See some of the best views in the park. You shouldn't miss this!

I'm off the whole week, so I'm flexible with the schedule. This could also be done in 2 nights if need be. Point is, let's do this section on your schedule or mine, doesn't matter.

I'd actually rather do this during the week for the "less crowded" feel, but whatever.

Post up or e-mail me for details.

Yepper..my shift is with thursday and friday off and I restart saturday thru wensday . Afternoons till late around elevenish. The vacation time I had left this year had to be scheduled around ratings (month of nov.) and also to be present in a support mode for the HDTV push currently underway as per FCC regs.

Jim,

I am probably up for this trip. I'll send you an email.

I'd be heading down from Chicago area if anyone else is interested in carpooling.

Correction...
It's Newfound Gap to BIG Creek. I put Deep Creek on everything I've posted.

Pardon my stupidity;

Are you still going?
I was planning to make a trip down from IL, and haven't worked out all of the details. I just happened across this site and saw this trip. There are three of us. If that is too many.

Been really hooked up
Hey J... Sorry didn't click with the right side of my brain to reply -do not know why other than I have been really busy with work since Katrina came and other technical projects currently underway right now. Will send you an e-mail.

Yep, still going, but...
I have 4 guys going. I don't really care how many people go, you guys are more than welcome, but I've already reserved the shelters for 4. If you want in, you'll need to make reservations at Icewater, Tricorner and Cosby. I also have a shuttle booked for 4. There is room there for 1 more on the shuttle. First come, first served on that one.

Newfound Gap to Big Creek Ranger Station
Just a comment on your proposed trip; I just returned yesterday from hiking the Big Creek Trail looping aroung to the Benton Mackaye Trail back to Big Creek, and I will say this much,it nearly killed this old man.
What trails were you going to use and how can you do in this a single day. Two days I believe would be a minimum. If you are using the AT, most if now all campsites are by reservation. As a matter of fact, I see only two primitive sites which are just by permit alone.
Just my two sense worth.

I'll be arriving on Wed. night for this trip. If anyone is interested, I'm up for a slack pack on Thursday. Albright Grove, Rainbow Falls(possibly up to Mt. LeConte) come to mind. Let me know.

What would you think about...
...Thursday night at Cataloochee. Maybe see the Elk? You would also be on the correct side of the park for Friday's departure.

Hey Jim, that's a possibility. Are you planning on staying at Cataloochee Thursday night? I'd like to get some hiking in on Thursday too, maybe Boogerman loop which is in that area.

It's a possibility.
Not 100% on it yet. I'd like to see the elk.

Cool, will do. I'm not making any definite plans for Thursday yet. I usually figure it out when I get down there.

Oct. 14th - the 17th...
...would include Saturday...and Sunday and Monday.

Staying at shelters; Icewater on Friday, then Tricorner, then Cosby, then out.

Throwing in an extra day at the beginning. Be at Cataloochee on Thursday about noon.
