If they're no electricity, etc., and many places are going to be without for weeks that were in the brunt of the storm, why would you think you could phone?

I'd imagine the phone systems have already used up the 8 hours of battery backup they have... and I bet not all of them are on generators and most of the equipment has probably been destroyed. Well... that's good for me though... business through my plant should pick up! :D

“CNN just reported that the cell towers with b/u batteries have failed. The emergency radio system for the cops and firefighters is not working either. It is just horrible. I sure hope he is ok.”

“I'll be riding out the storm with my elderly parents in their basement if it comes my way. They live about 50 miles inland and the house withstood 1969 Camile, the only other Cat 5 to hit us. The eye passed right over us.
One thing I will not be doing is sitting tight in MY house on the Gulf Coast.

Right now they are still saying FL will be hit, I'm at work today but may not be tommorrow.
I think The Weather Channel WANTS Ivan to hit FL just so they will have news of THREE FL hits!”

“He was planning to evacuate prior to the storm, so I expect he is safe. Gulfport was hit pretty bad. Fifty miles inland should have been good.”

“I have a friend that lives in Hattiesburg. He evacuated and said the only person he was able to get through to in Hattiesburg said the town was pratically gone. It's probably a good 100 miles from the coast.”

“Now that the footage has really been released I don't imagine there is a cell tower that's working, much less standing, within 100 miles of the point of impact. He's probably without power for weeks as well, assuming there is something to hook the power up to.

“Thoughts and prayers indeed. After posting that, I heard damage was bad for 70 miles inland, but it was too late in the night to power up the Puter again.

A hundred miles is flat out amazing, but that thing kept its eye intact for quite a distance inland, so that must account for it. Usually the eye goes out about 10 miles or less inland.

If SS is safe, it will take literally weeks to return to anything closely resembling normal life in the best possible outcome.”

This thing had a 30 mile eye for a while and it stayed as an eye for quite a ways.

When I went to look at Ivan damage a few days after the storm I started seeing pretty good tree damage maybe 80 miles north of the coast. I saw collapsed structures 30 miles north. This thing was much bigger and badder than Ivan.”

“There's no way he has power. My folks live in NW Alabama on the MS line and didn't get power until 6:30 pm last night. His will be down for another week at a minimum I'll bet.”

“Someone here apparently saw a post last Saturday or so that said he was evacuating. I didn't see that, which is why I started this thread. Although I'd assume he'd get outta there.

I know he has parents who are getting up there in age. Would make sense that he'd go to them, to either help man the fort or for further evacuation.

Hoping for the best! That Stovey is a resourceful one. I mean, what can you say about a guy who shows up at your canoe campsite in the boonies, one day out, offering Krispy Kremes for breakfast (and they're not even soggy, despite river and rain??) lol”

“I heard from my mother and brother today. Both are well, but my mother's house in Hattiesburg, MS took a harder hit than either of my brother's did on the coast.

My brother in Ocean Springs reports minor damage to his house, but all services are down. Absolutely no power and no gasoline to run generators.

His primary concern at this point is to secure enough supplies to have water and food for as long as it takes. While he stocked up, he is predicting he will be way short in the long haul.”
