Just read reports that say Katrina is going to hit Gulfport/Biloxi pretty strong.

Stovey ain't far at all from there. Hope he and his property fare well!!!

He hit the road the other day Lizs. He'll be safe at least, who knows about his home on the water.

Thanks, Sass.

Last I had seen on here, which I think might have been Sat. a.m., was that he was glad to hear the storm was moving west of him.

Surprise! It came back.

I figured he was outta there. I think he has elderly parents, so probably went to take care of them.

Just wonder if he'll have a place to return to! Hope so! Prayers are going out Stovey's way....

I read a post from him on Saturday, I think it was, that said he was evacuating. So I think he will be fine. He may not have much to come back to, but he will be alive.

The storm may be west of him, but the worst quadrant of the storm is the NE sector.

Weather Channel was showing about 4 feet of water above US 90 this morning. Expecting a 20 to 25 foot surge.

Doesn't appear anyone south of I-10 is very safe.

chili - is your mom ok. She's in Hattiesburg?

Last night I was telling my son about this since he's met "Mr. Kevin." He said, "Oh, I remember him, I hope he's ok."

He'll float.

dayhiker, in his infinite wisdom, my brother picked up my mother and took her home with him to Silverhill, AL.

However, this isn't his first rodeo and he has weathered worse from where he is at.

My brother in Ocean Springs is probably going to take a complete loss. He lives closer to US 90 than he does to I-10. He wisely evacuated to North of I-10.

Posted this in the other thread but this is still pretty scary to read:

An amazing phone call just aired on The Weather Channel a few minutes ago from Jim Cantore's producer, Simon Temperton. The two of them are at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport, Miss. (current conditions), where they have sought refuge from rapidly rising floodwaters on the second floor along with 300-400 residents of the home.

Here's some of what Simon reported in his phone call:

"We're going through some unbelievable conditions. Water is seeping into the building. I'd say we've had at least a 20-feet [of] storm surge. It has washed away all our rental cars, and everything else [in the parking lot]...

"Now water is seeping into the home and they are evacuating everyone to the second floor. I'm standing in 5 or 6 inches of water [on the second floor]. The power is out. There are a few emergency lights. It's a very daunting prospect right now....

"It's a very dangerous situation. I've been doing this for 15 years, and [I've] been Mr. Cantore's producer for many hurricanes, and I've never seen anything like this. This is probably the scariest situation we've ever been in -- just the sudden rise of water and how fast. They said we were good here for 27, 30 feet [of storm surge] -- they've never seen anything like it. They thought we were completely safe.

"We're not even shooting [video] anymore. We're basically in self-preservation [mode] right now. We're helping people put up boards and sandbags to keep the water from coming in. We've become part of the crew.

"In the time we've been talking, the water has risen, I'd say, another 3 inches. It's up to the top of my boots. The water keeps rising."

We will; the question is will we get hit by them?

We are used to it, so we know when to run for the basement, which hopefully won't be flooded by all the rain. My doesn't, so I'm not too worried. I did pick up a little AM/FM/Weather radio at Big Lots today.

Thanks for the concern! It does mean a lot.

Oh, and you may not hear from Supertroll for a while, I understand he forgot about all that ice he had in his freezer, opened the freezer door, and was temporarily buried in it.

I will have you know ST is alive and well, and he plans better than Bit gives him credit for...

If I need the ice, I have it...if not, Labor Day will bring the family together to celebrate birthdays as a family, and I will use it then...

Ditto the propane and charcoal....

As for the inverter and deepcycle battery, emergency use and occasional car camping.

My brother on the Alabama coast reports all is well. Wet there with some trees down, but no damage.

We still haven't heard anything from my brother on the Mississippi Coast, but really don't expect to until communication is back up.

Hey stovie, if you ever find net service to read this, hope you and family are ok. Let us know if you need help and I am sure at least a few of us trailtalkers will pitch in with chainsaws, ice, etc. I will bring the beer. I am serious. Volunteers helped all over my city when Ivan came thru.
