And watch out for that broken glass, guys ----” 2:31:25 PM 2/04/08 “What number is on the bottom of the bottle?” 2:59:53 PM 2/04/08 “Everything is toxic, even wood and dirt. The very worst hazard is driving, so I propose a worldwide maximum speed limit of 5 mph. Tens of thousands of lives would be saved.” 4:19:39 PM 2/04/08 “ Report Shows Dangerous Chemical Can Leach From Baby Bottles Environmentalists want bisphenol A banned from products for infants By Amanda Gardner Posted 2/7/08 THURSDAY, Feb. 7 (HealthDay News) -- Environmental health organizations in the United States and Canada are calling for a ban on the use of the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) in baby bottles, toddler sippy cups, water bottles and other food and beverage containers. "This is quite concerning. All 19 polycarbonate bottles [investigated in the study] leached BPA when heated. This is clearly showing that BPA is certainly leaching from popular and common consumer products," Judith Robinson, special projects director with the Environmental Health Fund, said at a Thursday teleconference. "We're calling for an immediate moratorium on the use of BPA in all baby bottles, as well as all food and beverage containers. It's not necessary, and we're calling for an end to it immediately." The call for a ban coincides with publication of a new study, Baby's Toxic Bottle: Bisphenol A Leaching from Popular Brands of Baby Bottles, commissioned by the same group of organizations, showing that BPA leaches from popular brands of plastic baby bottles when the bottles are heated. ” 5:30:27 AM 2/08/08 5:59:06 AM 2/08/08 “Does it mean that they all leak no matter what the code number on the bottle is? I reckon it's OK, since I enjoy a little flavor in my Spring Water. last edited: 2/08/08 6:05:14 AM” 5:59:38 AM 2/08/08 “http://www.wwf.org.uk/filelibrary/pdf/bpa.pdf ...Koji Arizono and co-workers showed that up to 6.5μg/kg leached from old polycarbonate baby bottles heated up to 95 oC for 30 minutes, but new bottles only leached up to 3.5μg/kg (ppb). Do you heat beverages you serve your children to near boiling for 30 minutes before serving them up? See, this is the typical rubbish the press loves to feed people because they know people won't take the time to read that "study that showed". This type of hooey sensational journalism is totally irresponsible because it uses information cast as "fact" that has in fact been "sanitized for your protection". People make decisions about how to raise their kids based on articles like this, which is really, really sad. last edited: 2/08/08 11:49:48 AM” 11:49:32 AM 2/08/08 “Put it out there and let the people decide for themselves. At least they know that the research was done. They can dig deeper if they like. Or should we leave all that up to you?” 12:02:06 PM 2/08/08 “I posted a thread on this some time ago and Kleetn replied with some good beta (beta is good by definition - slaps self). The numbers run from 1 to 7 in a triangle usually on the bottom of the bottle. Most bottles are now 1, which is pretty good. 7 (Nalgenes) is bad and MEC took them off the shelves some time ago. Apparently the coudy white bottles aren't so bad. Re-using, heating and alcohol increase the leaching of the plasticisers. I'm not going to stop using my Nalgenes in the near future, but am interested in alternatives. MarkO has a Brunton metal water bottle that is enamel coated on the inside and with a rubber ring round the neck to prevent your lips from sticking when it's cold. I have a similar wine flask that I bought about 30 years ago and is still going strong.” 12:12:50 PM 2/08/08 “lmao @ tilt. you consider a journalist saying "heating formula in polycarbonate baby bottles releases toxins" without adding that "heating" means almost boiling the formula for half an hour to be good enough for you? sure it's good that they told people that the study was done. what's wrong is that they misrepresent the study so people walk away thinking they can now make so called "informed decisions" when in fact they have only been told a faction of the truth. ever heard of a lie by omission? it's still a lie.” 3:39:26 PM 2/08/08 “REPEAT, and I say, REPEAT: Disregard my suggestion of buying the aluminum water bottle from Duluth Trading. It is made in China. I am returning mine. I trust the European standards of food safety, not China's. Sorry for the false alarm.” 8:22:38 PM 2/20/08 “So it's Sigg all the way eh? I wish they had some sort or top that wouldn't fly off and roll under the car seat. At least they're pretty.” 3:46:38 AM 2/21/08 “Stop saying SIGG bottles are made from Aluminum! It's Aluminium!! Yanks!” 4:10:21 AM 2/21/08 “When in Rome, ... You want us to talk like the British, too? Foreigners!” 4:47:49 AM 2/21/08 “Thanks for the tip roseymonster.” 5:05:04 AM 2/21/08 “When in Rom,... ...exactly. SIGG is Swiss. Therefore it is Aluminium. :)” 5:17:46 AM 2/21/08 “Not here! Look up ALCOA. The Aluminum Company of America is one of the world's largest producer of primary aluminum, fabricated aluminum, and alumina.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcoa” 5:31:05 AM 2/21/08 “When in read-only memory..... The distinguishing factor appears to be that aluminium is a song by Damon Albarn and aluminum is a song by the White Stripes.” 5:41:03 AM 2/21/08 “Hey Sass, you can get a top holder that works really well.” 8:03:25 AM 2/21/08 “Canucks won't use Sigg for anything but fuel - it's about winter and lips on metal, eh?” 9:37:03 AM 2/21/08 “Use a straw. ;)” 9:38:43 AM 2/21/08 “they need to make them from transparent aluminium. i saw that stuff on star trek.” 7:33:00 PM 2/21/08 “Now that would be cool!” 2:57:25 AM 2/22/08 “That would be a whale of a thing.” 3:14:54 AM 2/22/08 “In star trek they put a whale into the thing.” 3:18:25 AM 2/22/08 “yes but it was transparent alumiNUM now wasn't it... and it was invented by an american in san franciso (scotty gave him the formula)” 3:34:27 PM 2/22/08 “OMG. Anyone watching any Star Trek movie other than II: Wrath of Khan needs to reprioritize ASAP.” 3:37:48 PM 2/22/08 “YES!” 3:48:12 PM 2/22/08 “Thanks Rosey, I'll look for one.” 7:41:32 AM 2/23/08 “SIGG has been around a long time..those who are baby boomers know what I am talking about. Nalgene’s existing product mix, including the recently launched Everyday line, already features a number of containers made from materials that do not contain BPA. “We have always been focused on responding to the needs and concerns of our customers,” said Steven Silverman, general manager of the Nalgene business. “With 10 different product lines in several different materials, we have the largest bottle offering on the market today. By eliminating containers containing BPA from our consumer product mix, our customers can have confidence that their needs are being met.” The company recently unveiled its Everyday line, an assortment of bottles manufactured with Eastman’s Tritan™ copolyester. The line includes favorites such as the OTG (“On the Go”), the iconic 32-ounce Wide Mouth and the Grip-N-Gulp sippy cup. Tritan is impact resistant, withstands a wide range of temperatures and does not contain BPA. The new Everyday products are already available in stores and will be available through www.nalgene-outdoor.com next month. To help consumers easily determine the bottle and material that is right for them, Nalgene also recently launched Nalgene Choice, an online information resource at www.nalgenechoice.com. Nalgene Choice provides consumers with information to help them understand the features and benefits of Nalgene’s wide assortment of products and materials. The result – individuals can choose the product that is right for them. “Today, everyone from hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to commuters and kids on the go are using Nalgene products to reduce the use of disposable bottles and containers,” said Silverman. “Based on all available scientific evidence, we continue to believe that Nalgene products containing BPA are safe for their intended use. However, our customers indicated they preferred BPA-free alternatives and we acted in response to those concerns.” posted April 18, 2008” 4:57:25 AM 5/22/08 “CamelBak Announces Entire Bottle Line Now BPA-Free CamelBak Products, LLC, announced Thursday that it has converted its entire line of polycarbonate re-usable water bottles to a new material that is 100% free of bisphenol-A (BPA) and phthalates. CamelBak has teamed with an innovative U.S.-based supplier to produce a bottle made from an entirely new material, Eastman Tritan copolyester. This means that now the entire line of CamelBak bottles are BPA-Free, including the CamelBak Better Bottle, Podium Bottle and Performance Bottle. The Better Bottle with Classic Cap is now available at retailers like REI, and the Better Bottle with Bite Valve will be shipping to retailers from the company’s distribution center next week. “Consumers have been asking for a BPA-free alternative with the durability, clarity and vibrant color of polycarbonate bottles,” said Sally McCoy, CamelBak CEO. “We’re very happy to be the first company to give consumers an entire line of BPA-Free bottles.” In the face of environmental concerns, many people have switched to re-usable bottles, although many of these bottles contain BPA and Phthalates. While there is a great degree of conflicting information about the safety of BPA, the consumer demand was enough for CamelBak to develop an alternative. The company challenged its development team to improve its popular line of water bottles used by athletes, outdoorsmen, military personnel and millions of others. The result is a CamelBak Better Bottle that is BPA/Phthalate-free, allowing people to make an immediate positive impact on the environment while feeling confident that they’re using the best re-usable bottle in the marketplace. The CamelBak Better Bottle Launched in 2006, the CamelBak Better Bottle represents a new standard of performance and convenience in re-usable water bottles. Available in fourteen colors in sizes of .5 liter, .75 liter and 1 liter, this innovative product is available with the self-sealing CamelBak Big Bite Valve, which offers easy, spill-proof sipping for active and on-the-go-consumers. The Better Bottle is also available with a Classic Cap in .5 liter, .75 liter, and 1 liter sizes. The CamelBak Performance Bottle Launched in 2007, the CamelBak Performance Bottle represents a breakthrough hydration solution for athletes on the go. It features squeezable sides for an adjustable flow rate and the patented Big Bite Valve with positive shut-off technology for leak-proof transport. The Big Bite Valve also allows athletes to drink without lifting their eyes from the road or trail. The CamelBak Podium Bottle Launched in 2008, the CamelBak Podium Bottle is designed specifically for cycling and features the high flow rate, self-sealing Jet Valve. Rather than opening and closing a traditional valve, the squeezable Podium Bottle allows immediate and no-look sipping or squirting, and the Jet Valve self-seals to ensure a splatter-free ride.” 4:59:25 AM 5/22/08 “Sounds like it's a good time to get some cheap Nalgene bottles.” 5:34:39 AM 5/22/08 “Bought 4 myself 50 cents each !!!” 5:35:40 AM 5/22/08 minish223 “did you say something? I stopped reading after the first ?. I see this a lot nowadays...does everyone have spastic right pinkies or what? Common plastics chemical linked to human diseases By Michael Kahn LONDON (Reuters) - A study has for the first time linked a common chemical used in everyday products such as plastic drink containers and baby bottles to health problems, specifically heart disease and diabetes. Until now, environmental and consumer activists who have questioned the safety of bisphenol A, or BPA, have relied on studies showing harm from exposure in laboratory animals. But British researchers, who published their findings on Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, analyzed urine and blood samples from 1,455 U.S. adults aged 18 to 74 who were representative of the general population. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080916/hl_nm/chemical_heart_dc;_ylt=Ape1H5SAZi0L8g8_qjf3v9is0NUE” 9:25:15 AM 9/16/08 “wow, a comeback 4 months later...you're on top of it ;)” 9:31:46 AM 9/16/08 “i officially feel smacked down. i will point out that in the same article (which was slectively quoted) it says: A U.S. Food and Drug Administration panel of outside experts on Tuesday will hear testimony on health effects from BPA as it reviews a draft report it issued last month calling BPA safe.” 9:59:18 AM 9/16/08 “Oh, and I resent British researchers doing research on urine samples of US citizens. I am not sure why their domestic piss is unacceptable for this purpose.” 10:02:07 AM 9/16/08 “This calls for a piss-up.” 10:43:24 AM 9/16/08 “I trashed my BPA bottles and went back to the old white softer plastic nalgenes. who knows if there's any real difference, but i figure if there's a known and identified risk, why add that into my risk matrix of life.” 10:58:46 AM 9/16/08 “I kept and still use mine. My rationale is I only use them a few times a year on winter hikes. 9 months out of the year I use a hydration bladder. I'm sure I'm picking up far more toxins every day from the commute to work.” 11:06:29 AM 9/16/08 “ Live fast, die young and leave a beautiful corpse. – James Dean ” 11:19:24 AM 9/16/08
