Ponies and Peaks

“We have decided to go to Virginia for my first taste of eastern "Mountains" (come on people, how can you call 4,000 feet in elevation a mountain???). We are going from 10/8-10/16. Details are being worked out right now but I hope to make some kind of loop that will includ First, second. and Third Peaks, and with a side to Mt Rogers. I have also never stayed in a shelter and am kinda iffy about that....I dont know ir I like the idea of a lot of mice running over me at night (ICK!) I think I'd rather sleep out under the stars.”

i don't know how you western people consider it "climbing a mountain" or "peakbagging" when you start out at 11,500 and zig-zag along your wuss-backs "up" to the top of a 12,500 foot peak.

“Hehehe try the trinity alps sacco....5000' gain in elevation in 5 miles then a major scramble/free climb strait up over giant boulders and loose scree to get to the lake after that(even steeper). Really shoulda used climbing gear oin that one....:) Yeah, that trail kicked ass and was tottaly awesome with the views!!!

“LOL I knew mtsteve would back me up on that one! :) although switchbacks can be a real pain...I once did a climb with 37(then lost count) switchbacks after hiking 17 miles up and down all day- it was in full sun, no shade, about 85 degrees out...this was onthe PCT. I was fine, my hiking partner didnt do so hot cause of the heat. He freakin drank all his water and mine and the water souce was a muddy little pool a few miles back >:(. Luckily there were a couple little lakes on top :)

That was jsut a day hike by the way...can ya imagine doing that with loaded packs???

Well...actually I can but I dont know if I would have survived LMAO!

“There is a very nice "trail" that goes from the Sapphire/Emerald/Mirror Lakes trail over to Caribou Lakes that has around 100+ switchbacks and not a lick of shade. it's only killed one that I know of.”

Those western trails are more like gravel paths, too.

Whiteface Mountain on The Long Trail would make 'em holler, too!!”

Actually sacco, most Washingtonians don't call that climbing a mountain... We have Rainier. A place that usually requires a guide, technical gear and roping up to other people to cross glaciers, etc. <---Somethin' I have no interest in doing, btw! LOL! : p”

“you mentioned 3 peaks earlier, are you refering to the 3 peaks on Pine Mt, Wilson Creek Wilderness which is the 3rd highest point in Virginia or are you talking about Mt. Rogers and White top Mt and Pine Mt which are the 3 highest points in Virginia.

I amlooking at Mt Rogers through my bay window now and getting ready to pee off my front deck and look up at white top mt.

It would be an honor to hike with the infamous crazy mike backpacks and spirit coyote.
speaking of coyotes there will be many there singing as the sun sets each evening . You can here there song from Wilburn Ridge every evening. And of course most of the wild ponies will have been herded up soon called the rounds up, but there will always be some left behind.”
