Need a good hike in Allegany...
Some freinds and I are going to drive up to Allegany National Park in Penn on Friday night. Plan on staying the night at a friends house Friday night, hiking a 5-10 miles on Saturday and then hiking back or in a loop to get back to the car by 1pm (we need to be back in Columbus by 7pm on Sunday. Does anyone recommend any specific trails? Perhaps any trails in Penn would be great other than Allegany also..... thanks!

1. Go to Minister Creek, beautiful streams, massive rock outcrops with caves and crevasses, and great view. Approx. 7 mile loop. Minister Creek is considered the nicest section in the ANF and the most popular.

2. For a short 1 mile trail, go to heart's content- impressive old growth forest, massive trees.

3. Rimrock Overlook is very nice, short trail, great views, stone staircase down a crevasse, and crevasses from which cold air shoots out in warm weather. Off-trail caves.

4. Tanbark Trail is a 9-mile linear trail with impressive rock outcrops and nice campsites.

5. Tracy Ridge is a complex 33 mile trail system. Nicest sections are along the reservoir, johnnycake run and nelse run.

6. Morrison Trail is a great 13 mile loop, beautiful streams with cascades and massive boulders.

7. Jakes Rocks offers some nice views- take the Indian Cave Trail below the overlooks for cliffs, overhanging ledges, recessed caves and huge boulders.

To the south of the ANF is Cook Forest State Park- great place with incredible old growth forest and great views from Seneca Point.

Just west of the OH/PA line is McConnell's Mill State Park. Incredible place with gorge, waterfalls and whitewater rapids.

Southeast of Pittsburgh is Ohiopyle State Park- awesome place with incredible falls, natural waterslides, old growth forest and rapids.

Have fun!

if you want a one-night backpacking trip, go to minister creek, morrison run, or tracy ridge- all are loops.

Minister creek is really cool, I'll second it. If you end up there spend some time off trail checking out the rocks.

ya'll make me sick
you got all those nice trails up there with big rocks and stuff and all I get down here in east texas is pine trees and, if I'm lucky, about 100 ft. of elevation, up and down. PFFFFTTTT.

I am gonna start a new thread under trips since I have decided on a trail. I think we are gonna hike Morrison Trail... If you want to meet us there we are gonna be at the trailhead hopefully by 8:30-9am. I will send a link for a map and general directions..

Finding the trail: The trailhead parking lot is located off SR 59, 16 miles east of Warren, PA and 17 miles from Bradford, PA. This trail is located on the Longhouse National Scenic Byway, a 29 mile loop with abundant outdoor recreation sites and scenic vistas around the Allegheny Reservoir.

cherbear,

do not miss the 1.3 mile cross connector, probably the nicest section of the trail. massive moss and fern covered boulders and small cascades; several beautiful campsites.

there are many great campsites along morrison run. morrison campground has picnic tables, pit toilets and water; nice views of the reservoir, but you have to pay $8 to stay there- self registration.

do not miss rimrock overlook, nice views and impressive rock outcrops. have fun.
