USPS...United Stud and Pony Service.” 9:14:52 PM 9/04/05 “I like the idea of that!!” 9:15:41 PM 9/04/05 “I'd rather go horseback. Maybe it was an engineering faux pax of Seattlites, but why make hwy out of stone when we can use tar since the areas that they used stone in does not require it and they could have used tar since we don't get winter conditions in those places to break down tar? We have cement worn away so we ride on stone pepples that are so loud you have to put the radio so loud it's really impossible to tolerate. Forget about listening to books on tape where every word counts.” 10:18:33 PM 9/04/05 “I like the "bring back the horse" idea. Only thing is...I can't inline skate without asphalt. :o(” 1:53:27 AM 9/05/05 “stanlee, we don't have to take away multiuse hiking paths. New Orleans has a chance to redesign itself. Will they put in mass transit and limit auto traffic? If they had better mass transit and had made use of it, they could have saved a few thousand lives of death and misery.” 7:52:11 AM 9/05/05 Foresight or Common Sense? “When my son was learning to drive, I gave him my 86 Celica to learn with (22-26 mpg) I bought a new ECHO (obviously both Toyotas) in 2002 and have not regretted it. For the past three years I have seen the prices rise and I am still satisfied knowing that I get at least 30mpg if not more. Last year drove from TN to CT and got 38 mpg with the a/c running on the highway. Short of a hybrid, it is darn good mileage overall. I filled up this past week with my Kroger Discount and 8.5 reg gals still cost $26!! This is getting in the realm of the "milk by the gallon is more expensive than gas" in Reverse! Hope the Dinosaurs left enough behind, because no one has figured out how to make milk work in cars, and we have no shortage of cows.” 11:23:36 PM 9/05/05 “as much as I would love to tell them to stick the gas, I cant. I am training in East New York. It is where you go to die or where you want bad people to go to die so I am stuck driving because I fear for my life riding the train” 5:11:06 PM 9/06/05 Find new reason to raise prices...... “Colonial Pipeline back to 100% capacity Major pipeline that distributes gasoline to the Eastern United States is running at full capacity. September 6, 2005: 10:56 AM EDT NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - A major pipeline supplying refined crude products from the Gulf to the East Coast is now running at full capacity and is delivering into all locations along its system. The Colonial Pipeline, based in Alpharetta, Ga., returned to full operating conditions late Monday and full commercial electrical power has been restored to the pipeline, the company said in a statement. Colonial Pipeline was one of two pipelines taken off-line by power outages caused by Hurricane Katrina last week. The shutdown backlogged the distribution of gasoline supplies and sent prices surging on worries of a shortage. Colonial, which consists of more than 5,500 miles of pipeline, delivers a daily average of 100 million gallons of gasoline, home heating oil, aviation fuel and other refined petroleum products to key terminals and distribution centers along the Eastern seaboard. "We are all very pleased that Colonial is once again safely delivering both gasoline and distillates all along our system," David Lemmon, Colonial president and CEO, said in the statement.” 6:28:15 PM 9/06/05 “look at the positive side on all of this... Less Obesity and more activity. People begin to rely on themselves rather then huge corporations to keep them funtional. #&%!$... that's all i can really think of... i'm just glad I own a road bike, and the fact that I don't even have a car. god it's good to be 16.” 6:48:02 PM 9/06/05 “Gas has actually dropped in NJ today. Right now, it appears to be Shell that's kicking everyone else's a$$ around here, with prices hovering right around the $3 mark...” 7:01:28 PM 9/06/05 “stanlee, you can use those shoulder of the road spaces, some designed for bike riding for your inline skating, lol:)” 12:40:57 PM 9/07/05 “It's good to see that at least bacpac has some sense about him. It's all about supply and demand. China is in an extreme period of growth. They are using more oil now than ever. Do you think the Chinese National Oil Company purhase offer of a major oil and gas company in the US recently was a coincidence? Hell no, they want to purchase companies and export the oil back to China for their own use. Oil is a commodity just like gold, silver, pork bellies and wheat are. Contrary to all the ignorant peoples belief, the oil companies do NOT set the price for oil and gas. The price for oil and gas is dictated by the market (Supply and Demand). Our company has a contract with a crude purchaser where they pay us so much for barrel depending on the quality of the crude. In our case, they pay us the spot price of whatever West Texas Intermediate is selling for. On a side note: The Chinese are also buying up as much steel as they can get their hands on. Has anybody here had to purchase steel products in the last two years? I have. I purchase all the casing and tubing our company uses in it's oil and gas wells. Yes, I work for a small independant oil and gas producer. Steel producst have more than doubled in price ocer the last two years. And by the way, I drive a 1998 Chevy 1-ton crew cab that gets 12 mpg on average. I fill it up about once per month, unless I take a side trip or two. It is now costing me about $70 to fill it up, and I don't care, it's still a bargain based on inflation over the past 30 years. Do some research and you will figure it out.” 1:51:38 PM 9/07/05 “Car companies are giving SUVs away. Who is crazy enough to buy one of them now unless there is some practical purpose. I bought a mini SUV Subaru Forester that gets 21city/28 hwy. I was okay with that to get the all wheel drive and high clearance and just did a fantastic trail this weekend that required a high clearance 4wd to get to the trailhead. There were only big trucks and SUVs at the trailhead except for one car which must have probably lost it's oil pan or muffler on the way up. One trail report noted a trail of oil up this really bad road.” 4:06:27 PM 9/07/05 “Okay, who here has NOT gotten the e-mails that are circulating professing that a certain date will be "do not buy gas day"? Listen, people will either buy more the day before or the day after, so I think it will just average out. These e-mails think this boycott will really hurt the gas companies. I don't think so.” 4:08:31 PM 9/07/05 “A word of caution for you lipstick hiker. Be careful if you do any water crossings with your Forester. When I drive through water with mine the breaks don't work well. On the plus side the air intake is above the engine. I drove my Forester through a creek with water up over the front and rear bumpers without a sputter in the engine.” 4:14:15 PM 9/07/05 4:25:26 PM 9/07/05 “lumberzac, thanks for the heads up. This Forester thing is all new to me. I sold cars and never heard of their boxer engine and other terms associated with the vehicle. bit, damn, I always forget to look at snopes.com. This lady I don't like posted the stupid e-mail and said to pass it along about boycotting. Now if anyone says anything about my saying it won't work, I can post that info to make her look stupid. Don't you just love making people who are not nice to you look stupid? Snopes.com says, "yes", lol:)” 4:32:36 PM 9/07/05 “It's a great website. Unfortunately it doesn't shield you against the "Well I was just trying to HELP!" morons.” 4:34:06 PM 9/07/05 ““It's a great website. Unfortunately it doesn't shield you against the "Well I was just trying to HELP!" morons.” bitpusher 5:34:06 PM 9/07/05 ignore this user Or my grandmother who just forwards everything that arrives in her inbox.” 4:36:01 PM 9/07/05 “Boy, I'm glad my grandma doesn't do that.” 4:37:47 PM 9/07/05 “Chief - you don't seem to understand, as well as pure demand and supply, crude prices go up on fears of interuptions to supply as much as they do when the supply decreases. The prices you see are a futures market, which is driven by a large fear factor as well as demand and supply. That's why you saw oil prices jump dramatically after Katrina, for fear of what would happen to supply, now you're seeing them slowly parachute down as the actual interuption to supply becomes clearer. And we are talking for product for delivery in October.” 4:44:38 PM 9/07/05 “This boycott e-mail is a chain letter in disguise!!!! It's the same thing. It says to e-mail it to everyone you know.” 4:45:48 PM 9/07/05 “Y2. I agree with everthing you said. But it's NOT the oil companies who are raising the prices. The oil companies have nothing to do with price/bbl of oil.” 8:37:08 AM 9/08/05 “Here's a great web site for anyone who plans to do any long distance driving. You input your vehicle make and year and your departure and arrival cities. It will then calculate the cost of your gas for the trip based on current average prices in that area of the country. www.fuelcostcalculator.com” 9:03:08 AM 9/08/05 “That's cool, Ruby! It looks like it costs me $177 for a trip to Seattle and back and $85 for a trip to Rapid City in the Subaru Outback.” 9:41:10 AM 9/08/05 “Ha! $330 for the Seattle trip in a Suburban!” 9:43:18 AM 9/08/05 “Jon and I are driving to West Virginia in a week and a half to go white water rafting. We discovered that by taking my vehicle rather than his, we will save 20 gallons of gas. I think this site deserves its own thread.” 9:56:53 AM 9/08/05 “That site may show that it's better to fly. I know they may raise prices too, but it's worth the time to find out. Also, if airfares are less than driving, but you still need a car, it never hurts to rent one and put the miles on that instead of your car especially if you search around for prices, you can find some really cheap car rental prices. My in law was visiting and either used Dollar or Budget. One or the other was $30 apart.” 12:57:46 PM 9/08/05 9:26:30 AM 9/09/05 Albany, NY “http://www.albanygasprices.com/retail_price_chart.aspx I live north of Albany and gas is still at least $3.30 per gallon. At least it still isn't $3.60 any more.” 9:38:28 AM 9/09/05 “all I am saying is spend as little on gas as possible and don't use exxon or mobile. Use BP whenever possible.” 12:23:49 PM 9/09/05 GAS IS CHEAP! “Think a gallon of gas is expensive? This makes one think, and also puts things in perspective. Diet Snapple 16 oz $1.29 ....... $10.32 per gallon Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz $1.19 ...........$9.52 per gallon Gatorade 20 oz $1.59 ..... $10.17 per gallon Ocean Spray 16 oz $1.25 .......... $10.00 per gallon Brake Fluid 12 oz $3.15 ........... $33.60 per gallon Vick's Nyquil 6 oz $8.35 .... $178.13 per gallon Pepto Bismol 4 oz $3.85 ... $123.20 per gallon Whiteout 7 oz $1.39 ........ $25.42 per gallon Scope 1.5 oz $0.99 $84.48 per gallon And this is the REAL KICKER... Evian water 9 oz $1.49..........$21.19 per gallon?! $21.19 for WATER - and the buyers don't even know the source. (Evian spelled backwards is Naive.) So, the next time you're at the pump, be glad your car doesn't run on water, Scope, or Whiteout, or God forbid, Pepto Bismol or Nyquil.” 1:55:31 PM 9/09/05 “If you're pumping 15 gallons of Pepto Bismol into your body each week, you've got bigger problems than the price of gas. Such as, who's going to pump out the septic tank?” 2:22:57 PM 9/09/05 “SuperTroll, you are so right. We pay a fortune for water based items that are mostly water. Even in over the counter meds, the active ingredients that really help are a tiny part of the pill.” 5:02:14 PM 9/09/05 “whatever super troll, $3.00 per gallon of gas is not cheap. Maybe you can afford it, but you are a minority. Tell a single working mother of 4 on a limited budget that gas is cheap! Tell any working class individual that gas is cheap! GAS IS NOT CHEAP! We are getting gouged! The oil companies are raking in record profits!” 5:02:25 PM 9/09/05 “The hurricane maybe did a slight damage, but in the end...the oil companies found an excuse to keep the gas prices heigh. They prolly rubbing their hands...because now they found a reason to blame it something.” 5:10:57 PM 9/09/05 “Yeah, but who consumes 10 gallons of all that stuff every week, eh?” 5:16:46 PM 9/09/05 “This is really called "price fixing" which is against the law, but only if a group that sells "like" items gets together to talk about keeping the prices high. With the gas, all a company has to do is look at a sign to see what competitors are charging and keep their prices as high or higher, but it's really the same thing. Car dealerships do it too. They find out what other dealers charge for their cars and make sure they don't over charge so much that they lose business to nearby competitors.” 5:27:17 PM 9/09/05 Basta&%! “Exxon's $10B fill-up: Cashing in on crunch By Brett Arends Wednesday, September 7, 2005 - Updated: 04:27 PM EST Oil companies came under new fire yesterday when it emerged that ExxonMobil's profits are likely to soar above $10 billion this quarter on the back of the fuel crisis. That's $110 million a day, and more net income than any company has ever made in a quarter. It's also a stunning 69 percent increase over the same period a year ago and a 34 percent jump from the $7.6 billion Exxon made just last quarter. ``Do you realize President Bush has just given a tax break to ExxonMobil?'' thundered Rep. Ed Markey (D-Malden). ``Of all the companies in the history of the world that needed a tax break, this month, ExxonMobil should be at the bottom of the list.'' The law gives incentives to producers such as Exxon to expand production, such as for drilling for new wells in deeper waters in the Gulf of Mexico. ``It makes me angry,'' agreed Rep. Marty Meehan (D- Lowell), noting rising fuel prices ``are going to have a negative ripple effect throughout the economy.'' Meehan yesterday sponsored legislation on Capitol Hill to penalize price ``gouging,'' assuming it can be agreed what that is. Markey is preparing for Energy Committee hearings on the fuel crisis. Even oil company shareholders were critical. Hub fund manager Lee Forker, the head of New England Research & Management, said the profits reflected a failure of oil companies' leadership to invest in future production. ``They're maximizing present cashflows and ignoring the future,'' he said. ExxonMobil is spending about $5 billion a quarter buying back its own shares. Forker says the oil companies bear responsibility for recent shortages, because they have held back on investment in new production for years due to a fear of a price collapse. ``It could just be a big scam – `Let's just restrict the supply along with the OPEC countries and we'll all get rich together' '' he said. Crude oil prices fell yesterday by $1.61 to $65.85 a barrel. Gasoline prices also eased slightly from late last week's panic. But Lehman Brothers yesterday became the first Wall Street investment bank to issue a new profits forecast for Exxon following the week of post-Katrina turmoil, when gasoline prices surged as high as $3.59 a gallon in the Bay State and crude oil prices briefly topped $70. [continue] 1 | 2 | Next »” 6:02:19 PM 9/09/05 Boycott Gas? “So I'm supposed to ride my bike 35 miles each way to work everyday? What happens when it's raining, or cold outside? We don't have anywhere near the needed infrastructure to successfully boycott gas. This is just the oil industry rubbing into our faces the fact that there is absolutely nothing we can do about it, and that we're pretty much completely at their mercy. Look, oil prices go up, and who loses out? Stores like Wal-Mart. Mall stores. People just plain shop less because ya gotta put gas in your car. Shipping just about anything anywhere gets more expensive. Whenever oil spikes like this, it's almost always followed by severe inflation (as if our money wasn't inflating enough already...)” 6:12:33 PM 9/09/05 “I'm boycotting gas by taking two of these at every meal. ”6:19:56 PM 9/09/05 “Just rode home from work on my bicycle.” 6:24:16 PM 9/09/05 “While it's great that you can ride your bike to and from work, the oil companies are probably not losing that much on you doing so, since you were probably not driving that far anyway. However, for those of us who have 30+ mile commutes (which is not that uncommon around here if you want to live somewhere even remotely affordable)...” 6:37:17 PM 9/09/05 “Where is my favorite troll Sarge? A few months ago he was blasting the media because they were reporting on record gas prices. He made mention of record gasoline prices from 1981 be $3.03 when indexed for inflation, at that time we were somewhere near $2.60 a gallon. Ewker and I informed him that we all knew that when indexed for inflation at that time we had a little way left to go and to be patient. Well Sarge we are there. I thought it would take at least till the end of the year but here we are! Loser Bush stuck with another historical bottom in his legacy or in this case negative top again. Katrina, another reason for alternate energy. By the way I'm with Bacpac, high gas prices haven't hurt me one bit. Gasoline will someday be a luxury of the haves, as long as I can get it I don't really care. It would start affecting my lifestyle somewhere near the $10 a gallon mark. There will be a whole lot less traffic and urban sprawl at $10 bucks a gallon. Last week, I couldn't get it at any price and was keeping a generator going 24/7. I'm glad I stored up 50 gallons before Katrina hit. You know what is screwy, for a week after Katrina I flipped on light switches that were dead when entering a room. Now with power restored I'm still running around the house with a flashlight forgetting that I have power. By the way things are turning around slowly here in the Bayou State for the positive. Yesterday we fed about 50 displaced family members and friends at our house. Man we had some great food. I have between 5 and 10 people staying here with me full time now till they can return home. It doesn't even seem crowded. last edited: 9/12/05 9:15:39 AM” 9:13:10 AM 9/12/05 “He'll be back, never you fear.” 9:15:21 AM 9/12/05 “You know what is screwy, for a week after Katrina I flipped on light switches that were dead when entering a room.
