Gilligan was very important to my upbringing...essential in fact. Many of us listened to his words of wisdom during our childhood, and not only his, but also those of his mentor, The Skipper.

Part of the reason I am the man I am today is attributable to Gilligan...RIP "Little Buddy"...

It's always the president's fault. Darn it! (jk)

Poor Gilligan. 70 isn't that old. Why did he die?

Shut up SC!!!

The wisdom of Maynard G. Krebs was far more important to my childhood growth.
And that of Dobie Gillis and Zelda Gilroy, for sure.
Dobie's dad was a model for kind and gentle fathers too.

I once wrote papers on Hogan's Heroes as Renaissance comedy and Gilligan's Island as Comedia d'ell Arte.

Too bad - 70 is young.

Maynard G. Krebs!!!
If you say "beatnick", you think of Maynard G. Krebs.

"...when he took the role (of Gilligan) in 1964 he was already known to TV audiences for another iconic character, that of Maynard G. Krebs, the bearded beatnik friend of Dwayne Hickman's Dobie in the "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis," which aired from 1959 to 1963."

BTW. "Zelda" is a professor at UCLA. She shows up from time-to-time on the local news and such.

Awhile back, during an interview, Dawn Wells who played Mary Ann on the TV show Gilligan's Island claimed

that even though the show only had about 75 original episodes that those episodes have run and rerun for a greater total of appearances on TV worldwide than any TV show ever produced.

Maynard was known for flinching and saying in a hysterical disdaining tone 'work!!!' everytime he heard the word 'work'.

What killed him was the reality show - he couldn't take the fact that there was a show more inane than his own.

I remember when Maynard used to respond to the word, "work". "WORK?"

I think in the history of television there are some patented people who will go down in history for their special phrases and entrances:

Maynard G. Krebs
Horshack (Welcome Back Cotter)
Kramer
Norm (Cheers)

I am sure I missed some...so add your own.

Yeah, Bush killed him. Gilligan had just bought a huge SUV, and since there were no deals back then to get residuals for rerun shows, he could not afford the gas!!!!
