Wow. I'm so speechless. So far, her program has been more real than any media coverage I've seen. I don't normally watch Oprah but I'm home sick today and was flipping through the channels. She's showing the good and the bad and not placing any blame.

What happened and what continues to happen as a result of the hurricane is just so freakin' unbelievable. I feel so disconnected in my safe little house w/ my two dogs and my family close by.

I haven't cried this much since 9/11 and the several days following.

Wow

The second half was more about her celebrity friends and what they're doing to help. Which, don't get me wrong, is amazing and thoughtful and helpful, etc.

The first half, tho... wow.

Oprah's good about handling these kind of issues. She did a good job on the sunami story as well. Not that I watch fuking Oprah or anything. [cough cough] I'm strickly a Dr. Phil guy myself.

Well, Dr. Phil would not have the widespread celebrity-ism he has had it not been for Oprah.

Don't start, Nigal. You will lose. (lol)

I think Dr. Phil fell out of grace w/Ophra when he started promoting products and I think one product was not FDA tested???

Anyway, everyone watched Dr. Phil because you are either in a relationship or getting out of one and he gave advise. Now he has lowered himself to being another Jerry Springer with that first white trash family he had on, then he put on another one. Okay, some families have a teenager who has a kid out of wedlock which was the theme, plus the father's infidelity, but the relationship theme between girlfriend/boyfriend, husband/wife I think related to more people.

I watched oprah today while at the gym. She had part two of this. The devastation was amazing and very well documnted by her crew as were some very heart wrenching personal tales. My beef is the way celebrities parade around with their crews showing how compassionate they are. It seems really self-righteous.Now that the beautiful people are here the problem will go away...The only one who seemed sincere and able to relate was Chris Rock.

There is a concept I believe in, Noblesse Oblige. Just dont parade around using victims as the cast in your own reality show called "Look at me,I am helping".

I agree, to some point. But, on the other hand, I'm just glad they're doing it. And, if their celebrity status means crews follow them around, so be it.

I do think, as sad as it might seem, that some ppl feel great when someone like Julia Roberts comes to the church where they're staying and gives them a hug and some encouragement. It might really make their day.

Besides, I'd let Matthew McConaughey rescue me any day!

I just hope they feel the same way for a stranger who gave up a lot more to do the same work.

Sorry to hijack the thread, I have a huge issue with our cultural love of celebrities.

birch, very true, but those who cannot find the time, or don't like to get involved in this stinky, bacteria laden mess and just want to contribute a few hundred thousand, that's good too. People contribute the way they feel they want to, the way it feels comfortable for them, so I would not discount a celebrity showing up, because I am thinking they are giving up big bucks also and money is always needed. Now if they just show up with no funds, that's another thing. Yes, it lifts spirits, but it would be thinking a little too much of oneself to think that their mere presence is enough.

Not all celebrities tell the press how much money they gave to help causes. Just Kathi Lee Gifford did stuff like that when she hosted Live with Regis and Kathi Lee. The b!tch pointed out Jay Leno for making big bucks and not giving to any cause and she was wrong. He gave money and donated money from a book of his to his own causes, and even after her trying to bismerch his name, he still donated to her charity after that. Be it, it was a mere pitance, but it was a way to say shove it up your @ss. I give a lot to who I want to give to.
