If so, try powering down dead and then turn it on and see if Windows can find the card again.” 2:41:38 PM 3/29/06 “Nobody removed anything. It's just me here. No sound from any source. I don't leave it on all the time but for days at a time, sometimes. I'll try the power down and see if that works...” 2:54:26 PM 3/29/06 “If that doesn’t work, get a S&W .50cal revolver. Fire 1 shot into the monitor and 5 shots into the CPU. It won’t fix anything, but might make you feel better. 8D” 3:02:31 PM 3/29/06 “Make sure the speakers are plugged in. The cat or dog may have chewed or pulled the wires loose.” 3:06:03 PM 3/29/06 “You know what I dislike? I dislike when the ole "hey, turn it off and turn it back on" trick works. Drives me batty. Anyway - problem solved. Just wish I knew why the sound device disappeared in the first place...” 3:36:53 PM 3/29/06 “It's just a little shy and needed some "me" time.” 3:43:54 PM 3/29/06 “I'm just glad the old standby worked. LOL!” 3:48:47 PM 3/29/06 “i got a couple little but still anoying issues. 1). My windows password won't work. Well... it does if I logout, then I'll have to type in the password in order to log back in. BUT if I reboot it goes straight to windows without asking me for the password. I want to password protect my desktop at all times, so that don't really cut it. actually it's useless. Kids already figured out what to do . I can't figure out what's wrong with it. 2). for some stupid reason the screensaver won't kick in. It works if I preview it an leave it that way, but it wont' kick in automatically. both problems are each on a differnet computer. Someone know what could be wrong? last edited: 5/09/06 4:43:34 PM” 4:40:59 PM 5/09/06 “Someone know what could be wrong? last edited: 5/09/06 4:43:34 PM” Gemini 4:40:59 PM 5/09/06 Your kids are smarter about computers than you? ;-)” 4:45:56 PM 5/09/06 “why not use a screen saver with a password? that way whenever you leave the room for an extended period of time it will lock anyone else out. You can set, and change as often as you want the time before it will lock out.” 4:46:57 PM 5/09/06 “lol... i could use a screensaver with password down here on this computer, true... It's got to be some deeper issue. I wonder if my kids downloaded some dumb ass trojan again and my virus program didn't catch it. It's just weird. i gonna reboot and see if I found it. [i found some weird account called bonkers. can't remember signing up for something with that name, so i don't know wth it's doing in my administration accounts. the screensaver issue isn't really a big deal, it just bugs me. To err is human But to really F.u.c.k. up you need a computer last edited: 5/09/06 4:52:27 PM” 4:52:04 PM 5/09/06 “dammit, that wasn't it” 5:41:26 PM 5/09/06 “Gemini - Did you ever get that monitor?? 1.) Try setting a BIOS password. Press F12 or DEL whatever they key is on your computer and set a bootup password there. 2.) This could happen for many many reasons. I would first check your input devices for problems (mouse, etc.). See if they seem "overly active", especially if they're wireless. It could be anything from settings in the registry to programs on the machine causing it to an unstable table. Can you tell us more about your setup?” 5:44:31 PM 5/09/06 “Can a person remove an update from microsoft??” 5:53:30 PM 5/23/06 Sometimes.... “Go into add and remove programs, check show updates and see if it's listed.” 5:57:06 PM 5/23/06 “windows update? should be able to do it via the "remove software" section. if that don't work try system restore.” 5:58:38 PM 5/23/06 “No of course not. Jeez! I've also tried to restore it to last week which did not work.” 6:00:55 PM 5/23/06 “delete the program, then reinstall the software from the original CD. duh!!! or format hard drive, then install linux.” 6:04:16 PM 5/23/06 “Gem, it was the evil automatic update from microsoft updating the system.” 6:41:51 PM 5/23/06 “I never let windows download or update automatically. I don't like the idea of waking up in the morning to find out that my computer decided to spontaneously update and reboot during the night, especially if I left it in the middle of something.” 7:02:37 PM 5/23/06 “Learned my lesson. I had to ok it, and allow the update. Stupid me, I have since changed it. The last update doesn't let me type in a URL in the address box, it errors and shuts the window and it won't let me access Gnucleus anymore. Ba$tards!!!” 7:18:11 PM 5/23/06 For those who dare.... “You can get Microsoft Office 2007 Beta. It is a beta so it could hose your system. But it is susposed to be pretty cool.” 7:29:23 PM 5/23/06 “Nah, too messed up already!” 8:59:46 AM 5/24/06 “how do you strike out text on here?” 8:25:44 AM 6/23/06 “<s>text</s> last edited: 6/23/06 8:30:10 AM” 8:29:10 AM 6/23/06 “ last edited: 6/23/06 8:31:09 AM” 8:29:44 AM 6/23/06 “What did you say sacco? Suddenly the words in your last post don't exist anymore... ;-}” 8:51:48 AM 6/23/06 “I should probably know this, but I don't. What is Java Script and why would I need to update this?” 10:34:06 AM 6/23/06 “JavaScript is the programming language used behind-the-scenes on web pages. Its not something you usually update so I wouldn't worry about it.” 11:19:41 AM 6/23/06 “I was on a "work break" from TT when I logged onto a website. When I tried to log onto the website, I got a weird message about my desktop settings and updating my javascript. I guess I have to call IT. ARggggg.” 11:37:00 AM 6/23/06 “Help puhleeze! Our DSL internet connection has been crashing intermittingly for about a week. Today we couldn't get on. After spending about 2-3 hours talking to India Dell & India Verizon they came to the conclusion that our Ethernet cable is F*ed up. There is an icon stating "Local Area Connection Network cable unplugged". And When I disconnect the Ethernet cable the green light, for some reason(?), appears for the Ethernet on the modem. While it's connected there is no light on the modem. The internet light never goes on. The Indians disconnected us from DSL and our dial-up. After my call to Verizon then Dell, and them suggesting we might have spyware or a virus, I ran Spybot S&D and Symantic Antivirus. Spybot found three items of concern and I eliminated them. Through this whole time we did not or were not "Broadcasting" an IP Address. Nor could we find one on our computer. My last call to Verizon, they found an IP address so I think they assumed it must be a physical problem with the cable. We ordered one but I question there conclusion. After all, our DSL equipment is only 6-7 months old. Any ideas? Could our computer still be infected or have spyware? Any help would be sooooooo appreciated. It took another 1-2 hours to figure out how to reconnect dial-up. One of the problems being that we needed a new number. So, I've been drinking a bit through this for therapeutic reasons and hope I've explained things well enough.” 6:10:10 PM 6/23/06 “go to walmart and buy a new cable man, they're only a few bucks. if you hook up the new cable and it still don't work, just return it. i've had to replace my cable twice in the last 5 years. no bigee.” 6:31:43 PM 6/23/06 “Well this is the first time I've had a computer without an IT team. :D You don't think 6months for a cable is a shilty life span?” 6:39:02 PM 6/23/06 “Not when the hoover goes !@#$%^&*()_+” 6:42:07 PM 6/23/06 “A friend had a similar problem, we tried everything, including a new cable. He asked me if I thought the card ( Ethernet ) was bad, I told him I doubted it because his computer was only 2 weeks old. It was a bad card.” 7:07:42 PM 6/23/06 “I need help. Would one of you Keyboard Kowboys post a link about a very disturbing issue. Google 'John Mearsheimer and Steve Walt' and post a link of their paper of March 06 on the Israel lobby in the US congress. Thanks” 8:24:31 AM 6/24/06 “Iffn the new cable doesn't help you out (meaning that it doesn't produce link lights on both the modem and your computer -- assuming that's the connection the cable is making -- you can tell by what you plug the cable into), then one of the two Ethernet adapters it connects is probably bad. In this case, the best thing to do if you can is to try and isolate the two Ethernet adapters. For the modem, try connecting it to a different computer if you can. For the computer, try connecting it to a different computer if one is available. Depending on what, if anything works, you'll know which end of the original connection is malfunctioning and will have to be replaced. If you don't have extra equipment (computers, etc.) to diagnose this with, you may have to just try to replace both the computers ethernet adapter and modem. I'd suggest to start with the modem, as you can probably get that replaced free from Verizon. If that doesn't help, you may need to go to like WalMart and pick up an ethernet adapter. Fortunately the wired ones are not that expensive, and should run you about $20 for desktop PCI or about $30 for notebook.” 9:55:55 AM 6/24/06 “Thanks. We still lose internet access intermittingly through the dial-up, no modem. It's Dani's work Computer so she may take it in Monday for them to look at.” 12:33:40 PM 6/24/06 “So, hypothetically speaking, if I go to a coffe house with wireless, say the one 2 blocks from my domicile, create a nasty troll, raise some hell and get banned.....what exactly gets banned?” 8:20:42 AM 6/27/07 “the coffee house is never allowed to make any fruity carmel frappy coffees again” 8:28:48 AM 6/27/07 “LOL...hahahaha!! So you mean it's okay to troll as long as we do it from starbucks?” 10:22:41 AM 6/27/07 “what program do i use to run a .rar file? its a movie” 7:08:24 AM 7/03/07 “A movie player program. Liberal arts grads...sheesh.” 7:10:14 AM 7/03/07 “rar is like zip, you need to "unpack" it first. I think the more recent versions of WinZip can handle rar, too.” 7:24:04 AM 7/03/07 Roshal Archive “Yet another compression format that is widely used all over the Internet; you should be able to decompress it with a recent version of WinZip. http://www.winzip.com Windows XP may even natively support this compression format in its "Compressed Folders" utility.” 2:55:03 PM 7/03/07 “CB, haven't you heard of Google? It's this new thing... http://www.tech-pro.net/howto_030b.html WinZIP also opens .rar files.” 7:41:12 PM 7/03/07 “RAR format has been around a long time actually.. was the favorite compression technique on some of the usernet and hacker message boards. but yeah.. just another LNZ version. http://www.rarlab.com/” 8:56:14 PM 7/03/07 “Since it isn't too clear above with the triple repeat, let's repeat: - rar is a compression scheme - WinZip can uncompress it Just trying to be clear. (lol)” 7:09:53 AM 7/05/07 “And don't forget to reset your disgronifier. last edited: 7/05/07 7:23:21 AM” 7:23:03 AM 7/05/07 Jump to Page << prev
