You have not told us what you will be using the laptop for. That is the place to start when looking for a recommendation.

It is very heavy at 8.8 pounds. A 6 cell battery won't give you diddly for run time, especially on a power hungry machine like the Asus.

The drive is slow at 5400 rpm, but that is a standard laptop drive. You can get laptops with 7200 rpm drives which offer increased performance.

If you are going to spend that much, I would look at the Lenovo ThinkPad line. I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T60p that I carry with me to client sites every day and it's been absolutely bomb proof.”

Unfortunately for you, Microsoft does not offer a free, downloadable viewer for Publisher files. The best way to distribute Publisher files so that anyone may view them is to first convert the to a PDF file.

“Crash, what message do you get when you attempt to open the *.pub file? Have you tried to look up the message on something like Google, Bing, Yahoo or some other search engine?

Chances are that you are not the first person with the problem and that someone has posted something about it on the internet. My first thought would be that you have a corrupt *.pub file. That is immpossible to tell without a screen shot or error message of your problem.”

The .pub files are not corrupt and can be opened in Pub2003 OK.
Apparently MS helpdesk said a fix should be available end of June 2009, until then I've un-installed SP2 using this tool http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/954914 which has solved the problem for now.
