“Here's a few Tule Elk pictures I've had the opportunity to take this past week. They are all at the San Luis NWR, which is on the way to where I work. The weeds in the antlers are supposed to impress the ladies. It apparently worked because he had quite a following! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ”8:53:09 PM 9/10/05 “Holy Wah, Mike, those are fantastic! Thank you for sharing.” 9:01:31 PM 9/10/05 “Very Nice!!!” 9:05:48 PM 9/10/05 “Nice Pics! We have elk, recently reintroduced to Pennsylvania. I've hiked a section of the Quehanna trail with hopes of capturing photos just like you've posted here. Alas, I have yet to see a PA Elk. Maybe later this year!” 10:28:57 PM 9/10/05 “Nice job Mike. Inspirational.” 10:48:11 PM 9/10/05 “Thanks for looking everybody! Tule Elk are native to central California, something I didn't know until recently. PAHikes, Where about in PA? I'm originally from near Pittsburgh.” 10:52:41 PM 9/10/05 “Me? I'm from State College, but we have Elk in, get this, Elk County. They're elsewhere, but they are concentrated in and around Elk County.” 11:27:15 PM 9/10/05 “Elk in Elk County? A novel idea!! Go Penn State! :-)” 11:28:50 PM 9/10/05 “Those are great!” 3:02:21 AM 9/11/05 “ ![]() Good shots, Mike! Here's my elk shot from October of 2000, from Rocky Mountain National Park, just outside Estes Park, CO and right by the highway. I took a ton of shots on slide film... and have no slide scanner, lol. I hope this one turns out OK, because I lost the original saved version in a hard drive crash.” 9:07:02 AM 9/11/05 “very nice pics! The only elk I have seen in the wild were a few hundred yards away.” 9:08:10 AM 9/11/05 “yep, them be elk...aren't they Roosevelt elk or do you have 2 different types in California...lovely pictures, as usual...ho hum (she giggles jealously) last edited: 9/11/05 11:30:24 AM” 11:29:57 AM 9/11/05 “Love the weeds in the antlers. That's the kind of thing that John Madden would focus in on: "Look at this guy - he's out there looking for a mate and - BOOM! - he runs into a patch of weeds. Definitely an all-Madden elk!"” 11:56:42 AM 9/11/05 “Fantastic fotos! Want to make a poster of the weedy one! Tule Elk on the way to work! wow. go trek http://www.mytrekkingpoles.com” 12:32:38 PM 9/11/05 “hiking - I may be mistaken (Mike, correct me if I'm wrong), but Hiking Mike would probably be glad to make and sell you a poster of the weedy one. I noticed on his website he makes money selling prints. Check it out and read about Mike's history. last edited: 9/11/05 12:38:51 PM” 12:38:41 PM 9/11/05 12:41:00 PM 9/11/05 “Thanks for the plug mountainpeak! Yes, I'd be happy to have that one printed out for you! MHH, Those are Tule Elk which are native to central California. The Roosevelt Elk are lagreger (I think) and located further north. I have some photos of Roosevelt Elk, but unfortunately they are all a bit out of focus. Here's one... ”11:53:21 PM 9/11/05 Makes me crazy ... “There's a whole organisation dedicated to re-introducing wapiti east of the Mississippi. It has been tried in New York State several times. Failures are often blamed on hunters or poachers. The real deal is that there never were wapiti east of the Mississippi - elk was the term used for moose - still is in UK and New Zealand (elgin Scandinavian and Elch in German).” 8:53:42 AM 9/12/05 “Oh yeah; beautiful pics, Hikinmike.” 8:54:28 AM 9/12/05 “Thanks Gremlin. BTW, I have a cat named Gremlin... :)” 10:50:27 AM 9/13/05
