Elk Pictures

“Here's a few Tule Elk pictures I've had the opportunity to take this past week. They are all at the San Luis NWR, which is on the way to where I work. The weeds in the antlers are supposed to impress the ladies. It apparently worked because he had quite a following!

“Nice Pics! We have elk, recently reintroduced to Pennsylvania. I've hiked a section of the Quehanna trail with hopes of capturing photos just like you've posted here. Alas, I have yet to see a PA Elk. Maybe later this year!”

Good shots, Mike!

Here's my elk shot from October of 2000, from Rocky Mountain National Park, just outside Estes Park, CO and right by the highway. I took a ton of shots on slide film... and have no slide scanner, lol. I hope this one turns out OK, because I lost the original saved version in a hard drive crash.”

MHH, Those are Tule Elk which are native to central California. The Roosevelt Elk are lagreger (I think) and located further north. I have some photos of Roosevelt Elk, but unfortunately they are all a bit out of focus. Here's one...

“There's a whole organisation dedicated to re-introducing wapiti east of the Mississippi. It has been tried in New York State several times. Failures are often blamed on hunters or poachers.

The real deal is that there never were wapiti east of the Mississippi - elk was the term used for moose - still is in UK and New Zealand (elgin Scandinavian and Elch in German).”
