Fancy Food
This weekend I had two fancy breakfasts (that means it wasn't oatmeal, grits, or pop tarts). I found this pack of "Enertia Trail Foods Cherokee Cinnamon Rice" and some "Granola with Blueberries" in my pantry so I tossed them into the pack.

Damn, they were good.

Here is the rice:

That said, they are totally something you could make at home.

Ingredients for the rice were:

Long Grain White Rice, Dehydrated Papaya, Dehydrated Pineapple, Raisins, Butter Powder, Cinnamon

Any dried fruit would do, but papaya and pineapple are very sweet naturally. It came with a teaspoon of "sugar in the raw" which I put into it.

The white rice was clearly "instant rice". You add 1 cup of water, let sit for 5 mins, and eat.

What I lack is the butter powder. I can find it online but don't want to pay the shipping charge.

The Granola with Berries was just Granola, Dehydrated Milk, and dried blueberries. Not rocket science.

Anyway, if anyone has any insight where one might go to buy "butter powder" in the big city I would appreciate it.

I am thinking for short trips (weekends) one could just use regular margarine. I think it has a long shelf life.

You mean that 5 calorie imitation molly mcbutter stuff? you'll find that in the spice section. I use that stuff all the time, it's good.

I had their Denver Omelet wrapped in tortillas this weekend. My original plan was to bring fresh eggs but I thought it was a little too hot for that.

I've went on my fair share of trips and this is actually the first time I've had a dehydrated meal. Wasn't bad, wasn't great but wasn't bad either.

Thrifty, I've seen Ruby carry fresh eggs on the trail. Just crack them into a small Nalgeen and freez.

I found butter powder. The stuff is wild. It's sort of "dehydrated butter" and if you add water to it and stir it you get butter. I plan to use it in recipes for backpacking. A friend of mine that works in food service (a purchaser for ingredients) found some for me. What a gift!
