Anyway it cracks me up how everyone complained that he didn't do more. Now that he admits mistake they rip on him anyway. Americans just can't be pleased. Someone is always unhappy with the state of things it seems. *sigh*”

Basically he is saying "if we did anything wrong, I'm responsible."

For the Bush bashers who want a confession, this isn't it. For the Bush supporters who want evideence of a "the buck stops here" sense of personal responsibility from the president this isn't it either.”

“pedxing, I disagree. He's saying the federal government made mistakes and he's taking responsibility for them. The "to the extent" comment was to specifically narrow it down TO the federal government, because obviously the President can't take responsibility for the Gov. or Mayor, whether good or bad, even if he wanted to.

So in effect he's saying, "as far as the federal government not fully doing it's job is concerned, I take responsibility". I think that's a fairly clear reading of it.”

It still means he hasn't owned up to anything in particular and leaves himself and his supporters free to claim that any federal repsonsibility was trivial. So, his bashers have only a minimal confession to seize on and his supporters have no basis to claim he has really owned up. Actually, I think that owning up isn't critical right now. The time for that is later, so Bush basher that I am, I see no opportunity to bash him over this one.”
