I am more of a cobbler or crisp man myself. Fresh blue berries are quite good though.

Nothing better… My grandfather and I would go picking wild blueberries and huckleberries (do you know the difference?) in the Huron National Forest near Lumberman’s Monument. He would tell me about the "great timber thieves" (the lumberjacks) and great steam trains of his time. After picking gallons and gallons of berries my grandmother would make a pie the likes of which I only get when I go to their house... yes they are both alive and in their 90's. I would eat blueberries with cream and sugar for breakfast as often as they would let me. :)

Good memories. Thanks SC!

The blueberry crop was poor in my area this year. Gypsy moth caterpillars ate most of the blueberry blossoms in almost all of the prime areas where I go picking berries each year. I did find one swamp that was good for picking, but with all the egg masses I see on the trees it looks like next year will be the same situation when all those eggs hatch.

My husband was picking and eating wild blueberries on our last hiking trip. They were ripe at 6,000 ft on the mountainside. He said they were smaller than store bought, but sweeter.

What's In Your Pie???
Some of the nicest looking BIG store-bought berries are from Mexico and fertilized with human schit.

Yum!!

The little blueberries from the forest I picked as a kid were much better than store bought berries. They were so lush when I was a kid you could sit in one place and pick for a few minutes before you would have to move... only a few feet. We would pick them into cut-out gallon jugs and then dump them into used drywall mud buckets. We were pretty poor and lived on pancakes and oatmeal. They were a real treat.

Wild strawberries are the same way. It takes a LONG time to pick enough of the for a batch of jam, but oh what jam you get!

There is one berry I like more than wild blueberries and that's wild blackberries. Yummy.
