Mate? I think that's how Australians talk. That's what Russell Crowe the actor always says. Now Russell is only saying "ouch" as he is probably paying out hundreds of thousands of dollars to that hotel clerk he threw a phone at in the U.S. when he was visiting. They settled out of court. I like the guy as an actor, but he has anger issues.

BowlderGal and I were in a drug store last night picking up some vitamins, etc. I wanted a small magnifying glass. The magnifying glasses were near the eye products. All of a sudden, she grabs something off of the shelf - "Look! An eye patch!"

My response? "ARRRRRRrrrrr!"

I ran a boat yard in the late 70's early 80's. I knew every wanta' be pirate alive. We only worked on sailboats and much of the glamour was all employees had to play the pirate thing.I got so tired of the PR crap I burned out and crashed. It was a lot of fun, but just after I got out of that business sailboats kinda' fell out of favor.

Most days are like all of the others,
Go to work, come back home, watch TV,
But, brother, if I had me druthers,
I'd chuck it and head out to sea,

For I dream of the skull and the crossbones,
I dream of the great day to come,
When I dump the mundane for the Old Spanish Main
And trade my computer for rum! ARRR!

From your own link, thrifty:
"Welcome to the one and only, official, accept-no-substitutes Talk Like A Pirate Day Web site.

You've read about it in Dave Barry's blog. Maybe you caught one of our radio or TV interviews. Or maybe you just stumbled on to our site while googling around for sites your mother probably wouldn't approve of. Perhaps you're one of the millions of people from South Africa to Australia, from New York to the Pacific Northwest, who party like pirates every September 19th."

After all the pirate movies and others, like the war movies at sea, while I was a youth, I finally had my chance. My job had me taking turns going to sea in some remote areas, like in the Bering Sea off the coast of Siberia. I loved it, the port experiences of docking and departing. The strange feeling of not knowing if I would return, while watching the gangplank being removed. At that point it was the removal of the only contact or pathway to the world. Recalling the stories of the 100-feet high wave, I did experience seas of 60 to 70 feet, while in some typhoons with winds of 100 and 115 mph.

Tracking missiles brought the experience closer to war stories. We did not want to become another "Pueblo" incident.

It even brought back the experiences of my military service. I was a "spy," according to the Russians then, since I was in Europe in the Counter Intelligence Corps. And then years later I was on a "Spy Ship." according to the Russians, again. So, in some ways, I was a pirate for the U.S.A.

I loved the job and all my experiences with it. It brought so much of my life into reality. I just wish that it had lasted longer.

This holiday makes me think of the good Captain Hook, AT thru hiker and infrequent visitor to TT. For those that give a krap, I emailed him and asked how he was doing on this most important holiday and he is doing well, just not getting a lot of hiking in. He is rapidly turning into a corporate puke like yours truly, so it sounds like he is prospering which is good news I guess. Anyway, look forward to hiking with him sometime in the future. I asked him to consider going on the Red River Gorge hike Crash has planned in October. Someone put pressure on him to attend... ;) (crash, that means you)
