Wisconson is a bit off the beaten path for me. I could strap tennis rackets to my boots.

Wisconsin has been pathetic in terms of snow the last several years. I keep putting off replaceing my snowshoes because of all the warm winters with no snow, or at least not enough to warrant snowshoes.

In Md. we average about 2-3 inches a year. So lets say "Need" doesn't fit into the picture when it comes to snowshoes.

I am thinking if I don't get enough snow this winter that I'll just hike with my bootlaces tied together. It's all about the challenge, after all... ;)

Wow, I KNOW I wrote this response before, I AM having MAJOR technical problems with my computers.

Anyway... I'll try again.

Hey PITTS! - sorry for the delay in responding, I did recieve your email enquiry. I have a pair of Tubbs Peak 25's for sale, hardly used, I bought them for my son, then he decided he didn't want to snowshoe, he wanted to Nordic Ski, so I got the old "HEY DAD, can you buy me a pair of Ski's (AND boots, AND clothes, etc., etc., etc.)?"

Well, I did, so the snowshoes sit collecting dust.

I personally have a pair of MSR Denali's, which I think are the bestest shoes ever, but that's for the kind of snowshoeing I do. I spend as much of my wintertime as possible in the Sierra, and I really want / need the added traction from the side-rails & related MSR traction features. I'm often on very steep slopes, & I don't want to slip & tumble down those slopes a few hundred feet to my death. Death may not necessarily be a bad thing, but I'm not planning on it just yet :)!

I used to live in the northwest 'burbs outside Chicago, so I think I know your requirements for snowshoes. These Tubbs, or similar Atlas shoes, are ideal. I love my MSR's, but doubt you need them for your terrain. Side benefit is that the Tubbs / Atlas shoes are softer / quiter, the MSR's are hard plastic & can be noisy, but, again, if you're not traversing that type of snow it's a non-issue.

I wound up ordering a new pair of Atlas 10-series snowshoes. I got a good price on them. They are actually on REI as a closeout on their outlet store but I found a better price. REI charges tax but I don't have to pay shipping but it was still cheaper than the place I ordered them. Turns out they aren't in stock so it's delayed gratification yet again... but snow is still a ways off in WI so that gives this concept new meaning.

Anyway, thanks for all the advice and offers to sell me snowshoes. As usual I found TT to be useful and full of great people eager to help out.

I am really pumped. I got rid of my old shoes (they were total trash) and am looking forward to a season of fast hiking on the frozen lake in WI where I have a vacation home as well as some winter backpacking trips.

pitts -

If'n you want company, drop me a line for snowshoeing sometime this winter.

Did you go on the trip last weekend. I drove down and didn't see any of you guys!

For sure!

I did not go out last weekend. Life, family, etc keeps me at home and I only get out once per month (a commitment to the spouse or else I would be out constantly).

I'll be in Mammoth Cave this weekend, however.

Hey Pitts
Where did you find the atlas's cheaper than the REI outlet? Thats where I was gonna buy them.

hey jackstraw
They weren't cheaper in the shopping cart, but the place I ordered them from was free shipping. REI was free shipping as well but they charged me sales tax. So this place was cheaper.

http://store.mpgear.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=676

Total from this site was $194.

REI Outlet was $189.93 and tax was $12.81 for a total of $202.71 (if I did free pickup at my local REI store). If I had them shipped it was $11.99 more.

It was only a few bucks but what the heck.

Turns out, however, that this place doesn't have them in stock. I emailed them and they said they are 10 miles from where Atlas makes and ships them out and they will be in any day. I am not in any hurry. I don't expect good powder anytime soon! They guy at the store was really nice.
