I'm not re-reading this thread, but I think there has also been talk of working with the Sewards...

Do the Eastern High Peaks allow fires during the winter with all the snow?

AmyG
thanks for keepin' the trip public.

Your trips are the cold weather talk of the trail. Hikers say to me 'you wanna go camp and hike in the cold, then go on the FYAO . . .'

No fires as far as I know Phantom. A fire is a definate must have. It just wouldn't be the same drinking around a candle.

Precision - FYAO is traditionally a very fun time. Some people come to socialize with other backpackers, some people come to Winter hike, and others don't know why they come...they just stumble in. :)

Adventurist, what the hell is FTAO? You mean FYTA?

That would be great if Capn' Bobo makes it. I haven't seen that guy since the Santanoni Range trip on Labor Day weekend of last year. I'm not holding my breath on the SirPete guy. I think he's afraid to go camping with us because he thinks someone will take his "perfect" spoon.

How about the Dix Pond shelter for this trip?

I thought I read no fires in the Sewards, but I just went back and re-read and now I see that fires are allowed in the Sewards.

Or the Slide Brook Shelter. Keep in mind that the Elk Lake Road is closed from Clear Pond on, which adds about 2 miles to the hike.

so it would be about 4 miles to Slide Brook Lean-to and about 5 miles to the Dix Pond Lean-to. Looks like there is about a moderate 300 foot climb too.
