Can you identify this tree damage?

“At the C & O Canals national Park, they have signs posted everywhere to let people know that there are NO trash cans, and that they need to pack in/pack out their trash. The site we went to was pretty clean, however, it dismayed me to see 2 empty bottles IN the canal. Seems to me that the bottles were there a long time-- the labels were pretty faded. What I don't understand is why the rangers did not take the bottles out of the canal.
It makes me upset to think that people actually think it's okay to drop their trash anywhere!”

“I will admit to not picking all that I could this past weekend at Charles Deam Wilderness. I wish I would have brought a bag to put the 6 beer cans and 2 water bottles I saw in the middle of the trail. I did get some stuff that went into my pocket.

One of our guys got a comment from a horseback rider as he passed them. Something along the lines of sharing the trail with hikers. I sure hope it isn't these horse people that throw their Busch Light beer cans all over the trail. First, their choice in beer sucks ass! Second, I think that if I saw someone do this, I would stab them with my trekking pole.”

us people with decent taste in beer simply have more class.

maybe there should be beer taste profiling at wilderness entry points...

“I don't like beer in cans, so I pack in glass bottles. You can break them up and spread the glass around so you can hardly see them anymore. It's a form of recycling, what was once sand will be so again in a million years.

any halfway decent campfire will burn up beer cans- so long as the cans are placed well.

“Aluminum will burn if you get it hot enough. IIRC, the solid propellant in the Shuttle's SRBs is about 40% aluminum.

try this sometime:

as long as you have a decent sized campfire- a few small logs 3" in diameter or so-

try roasting a can on a stick like a marshmellow. keep it right in the heart of the fire on a stick like a marshmellow. not right on the coals, not too high either.

within a few minutes the can will begin to melt away. if you do it right you will not be able to find a single tiny piece of can left.
cans or pieces of cans that fall off and get submerged in the ash and coals will still be left and won't disintegrate.
like i said before, it is a bit of an art. many times i've packed out 1/2 melted charred cans that have fallen outside of the hottest part of the fire, or ones that were tossed haphazardly into the fire pit.”
