Can you identify this tree damage?View Messages“I don't think it was the scouts... did I say that I thought it was? If so (I won't re-read the entire thread) then let me apologize right now and say that I don’t know who did this. I guess I was saying that I use things like this to teach LNT principals to the scout troop where I am an assistant scoutmaster. These are sad stories of people’s ignorance, but they are good ways to teach the next generation appreciation and respect for the backcountry. A picture is worth a thousand words. Actually taking them out in the backcountry and building good habits is worth much more.” 11:57:50 AM 9/21/05 “At the C & O Canals national Park, they have signs posted everywhere to let people know that there are NO trash cans, and that they need to pack in/pack out their trash. The site we went to was pretty clean, however, it dismayed me to see 2 empty bottles IN the canal. Seems to me that the bottles were there a long time-- the labels were pretty faded. What I don't understand is why the rangers did not take the bottles out of the canal. It makes me upset to think that people actually think it's okay to drop their trash anywhere!” 12:23:03 PM 9/21/05 “I will admit to not picking all that I could this past weekend at Charles Deam Wilderness. I wish I would have brought a bag to put the 6 beer cans and 2 water bottles I saw in the middle of the trail. I did get some stuff that went into my pocket. One of our guys got a comment from a horseback rider as he passed them. Something along the lines of sharing the trail with hikers. I sure hope it isn't these horse people that throw their Busch Light beer cans all over the trail. First, their choice in beer sucks ass! Second, I think that if I saw someone do this, I would stab them with my trekking pole.” 12:35:10 PM 9/21/05 “Perhaps that's what that chick with the machete was doing...” 12:38:47 PM 9/21/05 “The Boy Scout thing was started as joke comment by Nigal and just kinda ran through the thread. No harm no foul. A pretty good number of us here are/were Scouts. last edited: 9/21/05 12:40:59 PM” 12:39:28 PM 9/21/05 “ Second, I think that if I saw someone do this, I would stab them with my trekking pole.” Wounded Knee 1:35:10 PM 9/21/05 ignore this user There goes your temporary insanity defense.” 12:39:37 PM 9/21/05 “Your a badass Wknee...ouch! That would hurt....awhhh!” 12:40:30 PM 9/21/05 “I sure hope it isn't these horse people that throw their Busch Light beer cans all over the trail ever notice it's almost always cheap schitty beer cans? us people with decent taste in beer simply have more class. maybe there should be beer taste profiling at wilderness entry points... -hello, welcome to XXX wilderness area. how long will you be staying? -2 days -do you have any alcholic beverages? -yes, a 12 pack -cans or bottles? -cans -what brand? -pabst blue ribbon -up against the wall mother#&%!$er!” 12:43:29 PM 9/21/05 “Ha HA! Actually, one of the cans I was was Keystone and another was Natural Ice. Blech!” 1:04:35 PM 9/21/05 “That young oak was sentenced to a slow death by this act. However, if you wanted to...you could haul up several pints of tree paint and seal the wound and tree may survive.” 4:28:33 PM 9/21/05 “It never ceases to amaze me that someone will pack in a 12 oz can of soda/beer, but then suddenly become too #&%!$ing lazy to pack out the empty can.” 8:24:00 AM 9/22/05 “I don't like beer in cans, so I pack in glass bottles. You can break them up and spread the glass around so you can hardly see them anymore. It's a form of recycling, what was once sand will be so again in a million years. last edited: 9/22/05 8:36:17 AM” 8:28:36 AM 9/22/05 “I prefer cans, because if you get the campfire hot enough they will burn. ;-)” 8:31:00 AM 9/22/05 “you burning jet fuel in that campfire lumber?” 8:37:32 AM 9/22/05 “what zac said. any halfway decent campfire will burn up beer cans- so long as the cans are placed well. my friends and i consider it an art. sometimes we'll roast a can on a stick like a marshmellow” 8:41:58 AM 9/22/05 “people who do not know the difference between tin and aluminum really piss me off.” 8:43:18 AM 9/22/05 “Actually come to think of it, you can burn bottles too, but that generally ends with a lean-to burning down as well.” 8:43:39 AM 9/22/05 “melted bottles make cool ashtrays, or atleast i thought so in highschool” 8:57:32 AM 9/22/05 “sacco...are you saying that a beer can can be burned in a campfire?” 9:03:37 AM 9/22/05 “tp- i'm saying that a beercan can be melted to fine ash in a campfire. i've done it gazillions of times.” 9:08:17 AM 9/22/05 “Aluminum will burn if you get it hot enough. IIRC, the solid propellant in the Shuttle's SRBs is about 40% aluminum. Burn some magnesium sometime if you want some real fun.” 9:15:17 AM 9/22/05 “I didn't think that was possible...but you wre there! I shall try that next time! http://www.camp-a-roo.com/litter.shtml • "Aluminum Foil this is an item you will find in almost every fire pit you see. This stuff doesn't burn or melt at the temperatures you will achieve with your camp fire. This includes aluminum cans - beer cans do not burn. (This may seem obvious - but after shoveling out hundreds of fire pits - I sure hope that there a lot of people who are not aware of this fact) Aluminum foil can be recycled at many recycling centers. Leaving it in your fire pit is the same as throwing away money."” 9:19:54 AM 9/22/05 “tp- try this sometime: as long as you have a decent sized campfire- a few small logs 3" in diameter or so- try roasting a can on a stick like a marshmellow. keep it right in the heart of the fire on a stick like a marshmellow. not right on the coals, not too high either. within a few minutes the can will begin to melt away. if you do it right you will not be able to find a single tiny piece of can left. cans or pieces of cans that fall off and get submerged in the ash and coals will still be left and won't disintegrate. like i said before, it is a bit of an art. many times i've packed out 1/2 melted charred cans that have fallen outside of the hottest part of the fire, or ones that were tossed haphazardly into the fire pit.” 9:33:35 AM 9/22/05 “I tossed a chunk of sodium into a lake once. It made an impressive explosion.” 9:51:57 AM 9/22/05 “cool sacco...I shall try that experiment next time..actually we were out on the weekend and the boys whated ot do that but I stopped them. Will have to try and get back to you. Pitts - you sound like the guy who had straight a's in chem class...lol” 10:06:39 AM 9/22/05 “Hehe. One year in high school I was given the following awards in a single ceremony in front of the entire school: 1. Excellence in Math 2. Excellence in Physics 3. Excellence in Computer Science 4. Perfect Attendance Award I was (rightfully so) branded as a geek. The girls would have nothing to do with me and I was shunned as an outcast even into college. It's a scarlet "G" that I wear even to this day!” 10:12:53 AM 9/22/05 “{spitwad at pitts}” 10:22:33 AM 9/22/05 “"Actually come to think of it, you can burn bottles too, but that generally ends with a lean-to burning down as well." -lumberzac Eh, what's a leanto or two here or there? I mean, at least the blaze will keep you warm all night, especially at FYAO, right?” 6:17:24 PM 9/22/05
