i usually hike with my pitbull, but now my 5 yr old nephew has been begging to come with me.

my brother wants me to take him, but does not trust my dog b/c he growls at strangers a lot.

so i figure i'll get a pistol instead for personal protection on the trail for when i hike with my nephew.

what kind do you recommend?
i was thinking about a .44 mag.

get this one

well he just got a camo vest for $50 that's made to hold a handgun, a (smoke) grenade, a bullystick, a pair of handcuffs, a knife, and 2 20-round mags. so i think he's prepared. LMAO!!! if only i were kidding.

lately we've been going to the shootin' range and blowing off some rounds with the old AK. fun times, yeeeehaww!!

I would take both. Just incase the kid misbehaves and causes trouble, you can shoot him.

I need to know two things before I can advise you:

1. why does your brother not trust your dog for growling at strangers if your brother is not a stranger...
2. why do you need personal protection on the trail...

remember, everything you carry on a hike should serve two purposes - choose a weapon that can be used for protection AND for critter hunting!

Don’t forget to bring a six-pack of beer with you. You might get thirsty from carrying the extra weight of the gun.

Instead of a gun get another pitbull, train both dogs for fighting, that way they'll spend all there time fighting each other and leave humans alone.

Plus if they get good a fighting you can make a few bucks down at the pit.

The pistol to shoot anyone that tries to hurt the pitbull while the dog is mauling them.

1. my brother is still nervous around my dog cause the first time he met him last year we had smoked up a bunch. i think my dog got nervous cause we were acting strange to him.
then while we were distracted his kid was playing next to the dog's food dish and my dog growled.
he isn't normally protective of his food though.

2. cause we have bears in NY.

common sense:

if i shoot a can of pepper spray it will explode. if i spray a gun it will have a nice minty odor for awhile.

winner: gun

I really hate dogs on the trail. I used to hike with dogs (actually a coyote)in the wilderness but even in the middle of no where, I've met people. I'm sure my dog has startled/frightened them as they tend to protect their owners. 90% of the dogs I've encountered in the woods were unleashed. Most barked & growled. A few tried to bite. If I carry a gun at all, it's for these dogs. I hate the extra weight so I've left it home until the next dog encounter. I'm gonna shoot the next one that bites me. In 35 years of hiking, I haven't found any critter not afraid of very loud noise, so I carried a .22 The only problem(s) with this .22 is long range & the safety kept coming off on it's own. Now I like a 45 long colt & .410 3" shell (shoots 5 .38 +/- balls) interchangeably w/ double safety derringer.

pepper spray. its much easier to aim, and will incapacitate an aggressive bear. cant say the same for bullet

for an all around good trail gun.. I suggest a nice .357 magnum revolver with a 4" barrel.

a. a revolver will work every time.
b. it will stop anything upto black bears.(shot placement like always.. is key.)
c. a good 357 revolver can be had for a good price.
d. you can use 38special in your 357 for practice.(lower cost/recoil)

Model suggestion.. S&W 686 hands down one of the best revolvers on the market.

as for bear pepperspray.. im not a pepperspray fan. You have to wait till the bear is close enough(too close), you have to make sure you dont nail yourself. And I aint betting my life on a spice that might or might not work on that perticular bear that day.

I carried the 45 long colt/410 only because it was a (small) derringer with decent safety devices. 45 long colt is about 2 to 3 times larger than the 45 auto. I've got 357's & 9's. I like the .410 because of it's short range & can be loaded very well for snake. A 3" .410 shotgun shell coming out of a 3" derringer barrel isn't going to miss anything . Again, I mostly use it for noise & peace of mind. Don't trust pepper spray. I would use it lacking anything else or a non-lethal response, but I'd want something or somebody backing that up. Each to their own & think safety. If you drink or are short tempered, I think a weapon is a very bad idea.

How often do bears attack people in New York? See them all the time in the Smokies, just run at them, scares the hell out of them. OK, so I've never done it but I've seen it done, and it worked. Glock 30 all the way. Guns don't sh@t on the trail.

NY has actually extended it's bear hunting season because of nuisance bears. I've had a black bear bluff charge me. I think, I would rather bang a couple rocks together than charge them. (again noise)I'd be more inclined to back away. Docile looking or not, there is a lot of power there. Watch one rip down a door with a swipe. Bears become a problem when they get used to people and/or they feed them. They're more of a problem in heavily traveled area's. In deeper woods or less traveled area's they still have their fear of people. Here, you just catch a blur in the distance.

.357 all the way...
Gotta agree with Phils Son on this one... everyone seems to discount the 357 Mag... but facts are, the 357 has more "One Shot Stops/Kills than any other gun on the market. I have this one...
http://www.lesjones.com/posts/000037.shtml

There are also much smaller & lighter models of 357 around too if weight is a factor :-)

Capt. Jim

on yeah... I forgot to mention you can get a lever action Winchester or Marlin that fires the same round and have all the guns you'd need to "survive" in the woods alone for quite some time. http://www.gunblast.com/Winchester-Ranger357.htm

.357mag or 44mag might be a decent pistol round but it's a pitiful rifle round. You'd have to practice with .38's etc because the constant magnum loads would work the action apart. Going smaller & lighter make it harder to control & muzzle flash from magnums takes night vision away which you'll really need since you'll be deaf for a while.
