Whats in your day pack?
Ok its a fall day and you are going to hike around a lake about 10 miles to look at the fall colors. You leave about 8:00AM the forecast is sunny in the morning with clouds moving in in the afternoon with a slight chance of rain. The temps will be high 40s in the AM and mid 70s in the PM. About 1/2 way around the lake is a shelter house that has water. What will be in your day pack?

Full bladder of water
Legs to my pants
First Aid Kit
hand full of granola bars
bagel with peanut butter
lightweight fleece
preclip jacket
whistle

Sierra Designs Wicked Light 45 degree bag (just in case - only weighs 14 ounces!)

I think that is it.

I would probably carry about a quart of water, polar pure, a small first aid type of kit, extra fleece pullover and maybe nylon hiking pants, lunch, some snacks, map, compass, and that's about it. I'd probably wear shorts and a short sleeve poly T, trail shoes, low cut socks, sunglasses, ball cap, hiking stick, and watch.

Oops, I should add my rain gear. I usually stuff that in there.

Heck, sometimes I enjoy dayhikes more than backpacking trips. I tend to dayhike alone and enjoy the solitude.

Never know when you or a partner will hurt themself so badly you must stay-in-place, so I carry my first aid kit, tent (1.7 lbs), "space" blanket, and 1 extra meal. Plus the usual water, food & proper clothes. The extra stuff isn't more than 4 pounds extra and is good insurance.

I'd never assume that there will be water halfway-or that you won't have to treat it ;)
I carry enough water for all day :-)
Ok, I'll admit, about all I don't carry on dayhikes over 5 miles long is my tent, sleeping bag and pad. I figure it is training...or something...

holy cow!!!...some of you may as well bring your car too!!! LOL...i'd take something for lunch, enough water, pant legs, and a long sleeve t and that's it, no need for anything else...maybe an ace bandage but that's about it first aid wise...10 mile loop, probably not real secluded and probably close to some roads, in my opinion no real need for a lot of first aid equipment or water treatment...i don't know, that's just me talkin

depends on where i'm going and the terrain. In winter if it will be 'remote' i carry emergency shelter and stove.

In summer i carry snacks and long sleeves, maybe a jacket.

rain gear ALWAYS goes.

water filter almost always goes (not on the really short hikes up to a lake or something though).

I bring enough gear to make it thru the night fairly comfortably. One reason is for an emergency from injury or severe weather and the other is that I like to hike thru-out the nite.

Gear lists … love them. Yes I know this seems like the anal day-hike list from hell. I love planning and gear lists are a favorite game of mine. I “stagger” my gear so I use the same gear for a week hike as a day hike and just toss stuff out of the pack. Notice no cookware, sleeping bag, etc. I don’t do a lot of day hiking, however, so I hardly ever use this configuration.

Granite Gear Vapor Trail
Granite Gear Cloud Cover Pack Cover
Extra socks
Lightweight thermal bottom
Lightweight thermal top
Fleece cap
Patagonia Puff vest
OR rain mitts
Fleece top
Marmot Precip rain/wind parka
SD Hurricane rain/wind pants
Space Blanket
Emergency Bivy Bag
Sun glasses
Monocular
Compass
Maps, paper, pencil
Petzl zipka headlamp with 3 fresh lithium batteries
3 extra AAA lithium batteries
Photon Micro Light
Leatherman Micro multi-tool
First aid kit
Toilet Paper
MSR UL Pack Towel
Sun Screen, SPF 30 lip balm
DEET
Emergency Whistle
Firestarters (Spark-Lite or cotton/Vaseline)
Waterproof matches
Duct tape
Food for hike + one day that does not require cooking
Water filter (MSR Waterworks EX)
2 platypus 1 liter bottles, one filled on average.
Stuff sacks as needed.

I am always afraid of hypothermia (either I will suffer from it or someone else) so I always carry at least the thermal top, bottom, hat, and fleece for most hikes where it will be cool (< 50 degrees at any given time).

It comes to about 12-13 lbs. It’s a subset of my 3 day pack and this is, in turn, a subset of my one week pack. For my three day pack I leave behind the emergency bivy and bring my Bibler bivy, 13 oz ProLite 3 ¾ length pad, and appropriate sleeping bag plus a few extras for cooking and a slightly larger first aid kit.

Light rain jacket, windbreaker type w/hood or a cap, water, even though it's available along the way, because you never know if you get a dry throat or tickle or hurt yourself, God forbid and don't make it to the water, so also bring a snack.

Bring a lightweight long sleeved wick shirt with a short sleeved wick shirt under it or in your pack. Oh yeah, and a cell phone. Even if you can't get reception there if you get hurt, you may be able to drag yourself to where you can get reception.

2 liters waterblader with water
1 nalgene full of water
first aid incl. wistle, ductape

My lengthy gear list...
I carry on hikes in the wilds usually this(and I hike out in the boonies of the mts 99% of the time...):
(though if it is say around town then I just carry my small pack with the basics...)
Marmot Diva daypack
rain cover-Equinox silnylon
silnylon stuff sack with:
liner gloves
hat- in winter it is a fleece beenie
OR Croc gaiters
OR rain hat
OR Celestial GTX Paclite jacket
down vest in the 3 off seasons
first aid kit-same one as my backpacking one
shovel
roll of tp
ziploc garbage bag
compass
extra shoelace
Tikka headlamp and extra batteries
2 handwarmers
emergency blanket
1/3 of a Ridgerest to sit on
2L bladder plus water for cooking lunch in Coke bottles
fleece jacket in the 3 off seasons
on long days (ie..over miles) 2cnd pair of socks and liners
maps/guides as needed
stove
fuel
pot
lighter
measuring cup
spoon
cozy
food for hot lunch
extra food for emergency's
snack foods for the day
whistle on pack
lip balm
sunglasses
wallet
bandana
blister kit of mine
and anything else that wanders into my pack.

Now it isn't actually that all heavy-simply because most of gear is lightweight.

All I will say is I DON'T EVER want to be the 5 o'clock story "hiker lost" and be the one that ends up losing their feet due to the cold in the winter.
In the winter add in heavier gloves, a thermos, snowshoes, snowshovel....

That list isn't anything compared to my buddy Marzsit's! He even carries a silnylon teepee shelter..oh that thing rocks for long lunches!

That was fun. I got a lot of information. So if I take something from each list it should look like this.
A backpack instead of day pack. That way I can carry a 12 pack of beer instead of a 6 pack. Great idea SC. A .44 magnum, a Vicoria Secret catalog, Kleenex, zip lock garbage bag for Kleenex, band aids, whistle (that ought to be fun after the beer),beer nuts for snack, bagels and peanut butter. A rain jacket and fleece coat, emergency blanket to cover me up for the beer nap. I don't think the map and compass will do much good after a 12 pack. And of course Matches. W N says to start with a full bladder, I think after a 12 pack it will be full enough. I will empty mine before I start.
"5 tennis balls" ? Did I miss something on this?
All kidding aside thats for great info. A lot of different ideas but all good.

"5 tennis balls"

You missed something if you don't know what my job is - my "day pack" is the pack I carry around with me every day that has my low ropes initiatives in it. These are games that I play with groups of people - a different group every day, usually middle school/high school age, which is what each of the items in my day pack relate to.
