(11/3/2007) Tempo Interaktif reports that Angkasa Pura - the management of Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport are concerned that the large number of additional private charter flights expected in Bali during the UN Conference on Climate Change (UNFCCC) December 3-15, 2007, will exceed the carrying capacity of apron areas. To meet the added demand for aircraft storage officials are allocating "parking space" at other airports in Indonesia.

It\'s the Sun, Stupid
“For the past few months, the actual sunspot numbers have been below [the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s] lower predicted threshold, approaching zero,” according to the letter, leading some to conclude that we may be headed into another “solar minimum” period. The solar minimum, known as the Maunder Minimum, corresponds to the temperature depths of the Little Ice Age, a period of global cooling lasting from the 14th century to the 19th century.

As you can see from this graph of solar activity since the mid-18th century, low sunspot activity matches up nicely with well-known Little Ice Age climatic events like George Washington’s Christmas-night 1776 crossing of the ice-strewn Delaware River and Napoleon Bonaparte’s retreat from Moscow in the horrifically-cold winter of 1812-1813.

The letter writer goes on to mention that not too long ago the Mississippi River froze solid above St. Louis, permitting westward wagon trains to cross in the winter and that you can still see old two-story houses in Wisconsin with second floor doors that allowed inhabitants to exit their homes in the middle of winter when snow depths reached 8-feet and more.

If sunspot activity continues to be so markedly low, then we should prepare for the possibility of a significant global cooling trend that could reduce agricultural yields and bring on the sort of food shortages that occurred during the Little Ice Age.

Holy crap that fox story is so full of inaccuracies I can't count them.

Bottom line we are currently at the bottom of an 11-year sun cycle. Happens every 11 years. Now, the solar activity (sunspots) does not equal solar output (energy radiated from the sun). That article is making them one and the same, which is wrong.

the solar activity (sunspots) does not equal solar output - Tech

http://solarscience.msfc.nasa.gov/SunspotCycle.shtml

The Maunder Minimum
Early records of sunspots indicate that the Sun went through a period of inactivity in the late 17th century. Very few sunspots were seen on the Sun from about 1645 to 1715 (38 kb JPEG image). Although the observations were not as extensive as in later years, the Sun was in fact well observed during this time and this lack of sunspots is well documented. This period of solar inactivity also corresponds to a climatic period called the "Little Ice Age" when rivers that are normally ice-free froze and snow fields remained year-round at lower altitudes. There is evidence that the Sun has had similar periods of inactivity in the more distant past. The connection between solar activity and terrestrial climate is an area of on-going research.

Sunspot Cycle Predictions
MSFC Solar Physics Branch members Wilson, Hathaway, and Reichmann have studied the sunspot record for characteristic behavior that might help in predicting future sunspot activity. Our current predictions of solar activity for the next few years can be found at this link. Although sunspots themselves produce only minor effects on solar emissions, the magnetic activity that accompanies the sunspots can produce dramatic changes in the ultraviolet and soft x-ray emission levels. These changes over the solar cycle have important consequences for the Earth's upper atmosphere.

The more I hear about Murdoch, the more it seems that he has no political agenda other than whatever makes more money.  He's a pure opportunist (like an infection, LOL).

The so-called Right was a market begging to be exploited and he jumped in with both feet.

He sees Hillary Clinton having a real chance at the presidency and contributes accordingly.

He sees the cost of power generation rising and the PR benefits of "Going Green" and begins to manufacture an image to fit that reality.

This does cause confusion for the Fox fan base.... as when Bush admitted that man-made climate change is real or that there were no WMD in Iraq.  The 'true believers' have a huge emotional investment in previous Administration policies and pronouncements and reversing that kind of momentum is like trying to get a supertanker to make a U-turn at speed.

The old hollow talking points continue to bounce around.... for years.

Undoubtedly there's always been a strong right-wing in the US. Murdoch has looked and succeeded in exploiting this. There was a niche in the market for this. People who like to be told that the rest of the world and the events in it tie in with their own experience.

The reason the impression comes that many on the right are being told what to think is that if you ever watch fox, or listen to one of the talk-radio shows, you can then go and hear this stuff being parroted back at you by many many people 'on the right'.

You see it here all the time. There's three posters who do it almost verbatim.

These news and entertainments shows selectively take a narrow focus and pick pick pick at it to try and destroy the whole argument. You can see it going on here many times a day. Find a thread and keep pulling until you see the whole thing come apart, or at least try.

Lets take the Republican debate. A fairly widely-held view was that most of the candidates come out of it looking pretty bad. What's on the radio the next morning or two (and on here) - the questioners were biased.

Lets not talk about how these people responded to the questions put before them (surely it's the answers that are important btw), what their opinions are and who will make the best candidate - lets talk about the questions.

More examples - lets not talk about global warming, lets make it about Al Gore.

Lets not make it about the issues in Iraq, lets talk about the media.

One that particularly stuck out with me was after Tenet's book came out one radio show paid almost no attention to what he said (it wasn't particularly favorable to the Administration) they just replayed and replayed a CBS interviewer's questions.

This is not to say there's no individual thought on the right, but it certainly is an endangered species on here.

OH CRAP....
GREEN scientists have been accused of overstating the dangers of climate change by researchers who found that the number of people killed each year by weather-related disasters is falling.

Their report suggests that a central plank in the global warming argument – that it will result in a big increase in deaths from weather-related disasters – is undermined by the facts. It shows deaths in such disasters peaked in the 1920s and have been declining ever since.

Average annual deaths from weather-related events in the period 1990-2006 – considered by scientists to be when global warming has been most intense – were down by 87% on the 1900-89 average. The mortality rate from catastrophes, measured in deaths per million people, dropped by 93%.

The report by the Civil Society Coalition on Climate Change, a grouping of 41 mainly free-market bodies, comes on the eve of an international meeting on climate change in Bali.

you boys didn't even both reading the rest of the artical you quoted from did you - you read the intro and stopped.

The number of deaths had fallen sharply because of better warning systems, improved flood defences and other measures. Poor countries remained most vulnerable.

The report by the Civil Society Coalition on Climate Change, a grouping of 41 mainly free-market bodies, comes on the eve of an international meeting on climate change in Bali.

See the thing is - you boys just follow the pattern I outlined above. Instead of looking at the big picture, the vast majority of work on the subject, for example the consensus that exists among climatologists on the causes of climate change - you get one little report comissioned by a bunch of rightists who don't like anything that doesn't fit with their agenda, and then use it to pick.

Ingore the main arguments, find something small that raises a few questions, then hit it hit it hit it. Pick pick pick. The funny thing is you can't even see you're doing it.

I'm not thinking they are really conservatives. They offer no ideas, just attacks on liberals.
They are just libby haters - no policies, no ideas, just hatred for libbies.
