Since we're on the topic of cell phones (in another thread). I thought I would bring up the topic of secret codes (easter eggs, back doors) your phone might support. Neat stuff if you like to see some of the tech behind your phone's operation. These codes work for some models, not for others. You enter them on the keypad and the screens appear. In some cases you need to cycle your phone on/off before special screens or menus appear, after entering the codes.

Ericsson (i've used these codes)
987> (987 right-arrow) short programming mode
923885> long programming mode
904060> phone reset (never had the balls to try this with my old Ericsson)
904059> test mode (not sure what this did)
904090> field test mode (neat area showing things like signal strength in dB, tower id, etc)

Motorola (FCN and STO are buttons; I've used these codes)
FCN,FCN,0,0,*,*,T,E,S,T,M,O,D,E,STO test mode (may only be one FCN at the beginning; I have instructions for getting your security code in very old phones, doesn't work for newer phones)
FCN, 13 zeroes in a row, RCL don't remember what this does
FCN, 0123456123456, RCL don't remember what this does

Nokia (I've used these codes)
*3001#12345#, then power off/on; this enables field test menu, enter 0101 on that menu to start cycling through the field test screens, neat stuff like tower and signal info
*#WAR0ANTY# (middle character is a ZERO) warranty info, total minutes in use info
*#6391# nam 1 info (nam is a phone number, some phones can have more than one phone number)
*#6392# nam 2 info

Samsung
47*869#08#9 don't know what this does

I tried that first Nokia number. When I hit the power button it went to the shutdown menu. When I hit the select button it basically told me to mind my own beeswax with a stop sign, then reverted back to the number.

I think most of y'all will soon be making a call over your land line:
"Hello, customer service? My cell phone is screwed up. I don't have any idea how this happened." ;-)

That thought occurred to me as I hit the enter button SS.

The field test modes won't harm your phones. I've used them on my phones for Nokia, Motorola, and Ericsson. You can type in "(your phone here) secret codes" in Google for more codes and descriptions of the screens you see. My current Nokia 6340i accepts the field test mode above. You may need to enter it twice and power it off/on in between to get it to accept it.

Samsung number does nothing. It gives you an "incorrect number" message.

I tried to get rid of my cell phone a few months back. My wife and I have one of those two phone deals.

Well, after ordering Sprint to shut mine down, they offered a deal to keep the second phone for less than just keeping the one phone.

So, now the thing just sits on my passenger side seat and beeps every once in a while because I don't charge it much. Or maybe it just hates me.

These are a passing fad:)
