So then you'll only be paying 30% over market value. Be wary of REI. They have lots of cool stuff, but you can usually find a comparable item somewhere else for much less. It's a nice thought though, you sound like a good wife! My anniversary was yesterday, my wife surprised me with a new circular saw for my shop!!! Yeah!!! Cheers to great wives!!!

REI is one of my favorites stores. I buy me a pair of hiking boots and get blisters, I know for sure I can return them back to REI. No other store will do that for you.

Actually I don't think their prices are THAT heigh. I don't have money to waste, but I don't mind spending a little more for great customer service.

REI = Return Every Item

I agree that their customer service is great. They have taken things back when I was really certain they would not but felt I had a legit gripe. I always comparison shop but price isn't the only thing I look for.

backcountrygear.com is another store that I have had good experience with in this regard. They have good sales and often good prices but their customer support is outstanding. I never dread calling them and they always "make it right". That brings me back time and time again.

backcountrygear.com is another one of my favorites. I am not sure about their return policy, but I do know that they have my westernmountaineering bags and I know they have great deals once in a while.

Yeah, I scored a pair of winter boots normally for $100, now reduced to like $39 with the discounts. :)

I agree that REI isn't always the cheapest option available. I can usually find the same gear at places like Campmor for much less, and being an NY/NJ Trail Conference Member, I would also get an extra 10% off anything I buy there, regardless of whether it's already on sale.

However, that being said, if you're an REI member, their level of customer service is unsurpassed as far as my experience with any other outfitter. I just bought a pair of boots over the website/mail, and I can rest assured that if they don't fit just right, I can just return them, no questions asked.

Also, with REI, I had a pair of trekking poles for over 6 months when they broke because I slipped and fell on them. REI took them back and exchanged them for me free of charge. I don't think anyone else would do that.

No other store will do that? Try EMS... EMS has given me better customer service then REI has.

Does anybody else remember when REI was THE low price outfitter? Low prices AND membership dividends! REI's house brands were the low price alternative to North Face and Sierra Designs. What happened?

The REI outlet store often has some of the best deals out there.
Anbd EMS are good simply becuase REI is so good. REI has raised the standards of all in the outdoor business.

no other outfitter would have great customer service if it weren't for REI. other people aren't going to take crap you broke back just because theyre nice. they're doing it to compete with REI, who did it to build an image, which now stands above any other outfitter, whether the pople who dislike REi accept that or not.

If you have a Sportsman's Warehouse in your area, give them a look. Out local SW has a huge selection, great customer service people, and prices are always lower than the local REI. The times I've been in our local REI the sales "kids" have been more interested in chatting with their friends and co-workers than helping customers out. Their prices are always retail, unless you come across one of the 20% coupons mentioned above that can be used in a REI store, and not just an REI Outlet. Yup, give SW a shot if you have one in your area!

I will shop REI for certain items, but mostly shop at Outdoor World or at my local army surplus store. I like keeping my money local if i can, and they offer great prices on very durable gear. Outdoor World has been great on returns as well. I had two thermarests die on me within weeks and they exchanged them no questions asked.

If I go local I am 100% sure that I can not return my boots that I bought 3 month ago...which now give me blisters. None of the local outfitters will do that here in Columbia. I am suppose to walk around in my house and see how they feel...then return them if I don't like them. Well guess what? I don't have hills in my damn house!

I am sure if we wouldn't return our gear to REI as much as some do the prices would be lower too.

yes, I still buy some of my gear locally...but prefer to shop at REI. Would be nice if we would have one in Columbia.
