Pammie - you should try the toilet paper and olive oil starter - IMO better than those cotton balls and much easier to make

Recycling all your toilet paper, HOI?

no - it was a question that came up on another forum and I got told it would not work if the toilet paper was wet (aka worst case scenario) - I disagree but I have been too lazy to actually do the experiment

Pistachio shells work well.

take a bicycle innertube and cut it into strips. then as you need to start a fire cut off a 1cmx1cm chunk and light it with a match. the stuff burns like nuts (good luck putting it out!) stinks a bit but makes a great firestarter, even wet.

I like to dump fritos in my chili.

Hoi, flannel sheets make the best lint ever.

You all ever use birch bark you find on the ground? I never peel a tree but usually I walk past dozens of pieces on the trail and will pick up a bit here and there. It burns very well when wet.

I have a genuine piece of birch bark I collected in Maine when my niece got married. We don't get it down here... and pine bark just isn't the same, :-(

You Tube demo of Blast Match recommended by Super Troll. I just bought one of these little gems.

I've got that on my list. Saw it on this site: http://www.ultimatesurvival.com/civilian.cfm

Lots of neat stuff there.

I would hate to be the guy who had to use the "motorless" chainsaw.

I bought one. I'll check it out before I take it on the road.

I'm pretty impressed with this one I have to say.

I will

not be buying one. Nice but I don't need any more mostly unused stuff in my gear boxes.

My favorite fire starter, after gasoline and tracer rounds, is made of rolled up newspaper, parraffin and a match.

Roll up ten or twelve sheets of newspaper as tight as you can make it. Use the whole sheet. Tie string around the roll every 3 inches or so. Cut the newspaper between the string ties. Dip the newspaper in melted paraffin. After the wax cools a bit, but before it is hard, stick a farmer's match, the light anywhere kind, in the middle of the roll of newspaper. I usually carry 10-20 of these with when I go camping or hiking. I break them up so I will always have at least one on me at all times. In my fly vest, my daypack, mainpack, etc. When you want to light it, push the match out of the center of the newspaper with a stick, wipe off most of the wax, peel a few pages from the newspaper roll and light them. The roll burns for a LONG time, more than long enough to build a good fire around it.

To make it more fun with the kids, when you melt the wax add candle scents to it so that when you are on the trail you can have a scented fire. It's corny but the kids love it and it gets them involved.
