A cure for cancer.

“Brian Williams reported tonight that a massive clinical trial of a vaccine against cervical cancer has proven to be essentially 100% effective.

Cervical cancer is caused by a virus, thus a vaccine is practical.

In fact, it's the same virus that causes genital warts, if I've got my facts right. The vaccine won't do much for adults who have already contracted the virus, but once the FDA approves it, the plan will be to give it to every single pre-teen in the country, as a matter of routine. It's safe to assume that the other industrialized nations will do the same.

Anyway, it looks like we'll soon have a world where cervical cancer joins polio and smallpox in the dustbin of history.

“That is GREAT news! I wonder how long it will take to get to the public.”

“I heard it will be next year before the drug will be out. From the way they explained it on TV the drug prevents the HPV virus from causing lesions that could become cancerous, but doesn't actually work by curing cancer once a lesion become malignant.”

Who said I wasn't? Or are you just trying to be an a$s infering I am not? Anyhoo...

Because I have money invested in a company they have working capitol in which to invest in R&D to create these new technologies. Without people like myself who invest in companies they beleive in you wouldn't see many if any of the great innovations of our time. But, if you think that I in any way whatsoever feel ashamed that that I benifit from a company developing a society-changing technology because of the risk I took with my hard earned money you will surely be dissapointed. I take comfort in knowing that my couple of thou in merck stock has done more for the betterment of society then a buncha guys sitting behind their computers posting on a bulletin board.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with Deore being happy with the potential of the stock going up. It's been a hard couple of years for stock holders whose stocks went down and never came back up. I'd be happy to if it were me. I think you can be happy about the cure and the stock.”

“Thanks for your concern DDX, but I'm doing just fine - very well by any standards. Of course anyone who doesn't agree with one particular view is looking forward to sponging off the state. I know this must be hard for you to understand, but 'liberal' views don't always evolve from self-interest.

Anyhow. The annoucement is very good news. No problem with a private company developing what could be a wonderful drug if it pans out. It was just an interesting initial response.
