Let's keep it positive!
I think it's admirable to be a liberal... for the right reasons. I also think it's self-serving & disgusting to be a liberal, for the wrong reasons. Let's discuss!

The right reasons: You really care about your fellow human being & want basic diginty for all. That means we should have a "safety net" in place and all chip in to help that person who has had some negative circumstance affect them, I'm all for it! RAISE my taxes if that what it takes, and I'll support that initiative!

The WRONG reasons... it's self-serving to have people "depend" upon you... in a political world you create a huge group of people (voters) who HAVE to vote for you because you TAKE CARE OF THEM and you tell them THEY DON'T HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES! This politician is the lowest of low-level, bottom-feeding life forms. And you wonder why some look upon them with disdain? They CREATE permanent dependence just so they can get the votes! WHAT SCUM!

They ask nothing in return... no self-responsibility; no planning for how one would raise themselves ABOVE their current negative situation, They're simply doing that person a disservice by suggesting they never have to do anything for themselves, and that "government" will take care of them forever! They are creating a permanent underclass, but those folks will ALWAYS vote for them. They feed into the idea that they don't they have any responsibility for their own well-being, everything is someone elses fault.

So... elections aren't all that far away. Do you want to support someone who creates a permanent underclass & robs people of personal dignity by telling them they can't ever be self-reliant.... or.... do you want to support someone who suggests that we should create an environment where everyone can be self-sufficient?

Just food for thought. I'd like to see someone post a similar thread asking for the Republican alternative discussion points.

Let's not defend what we already believe, let's actually ANALYZE the issues & think about WHY we believe what we believe!

Pos-i-tive, as in, how do we solve the problems facing us as a country?

I don't think we solve them by creating a larger underclass... by telling people through our actions that we don't believe them capable of taking care of themselves.

It boggles my mind that so may lefties think they "care" about people & that's why they're lefties. If you cared at all for them you'd want them to have the self-dignity that comes along with being self-sufficient. Giving them a check every month robs them of dignity and makes them feel as if they have to depend upon others.

How incredibly sad... you lefties who think you're doing these people a favor should really think about what damage you're doing. You're not helping, you're hurting.

Hi Ya, CB, this is the same old wanderer. You probably missed it, but turns out there's another "wanderer" who is a backpacker from Kentucky & I guess hits some of the BB's occasionally... I got an email alerting me to the fact that she was being accused of some things resulting from MY posts, so I thought I would change my log-in to CA-Wanderer, since I'm the California Wanderer. That way you guys can throw rocks at me & not hit her, an innocent bystander:)

You are aware that welfare was reformed in 1996 to address your above concerns... aren't you?

It is true that the Welfare reforms of the 1990s were designed to address those concerns.

Howver, there still are people getting support by check or even direct deposit into the bank. Last year after getting out of the hospital, I was told that I should apply for disability. I completed the forms, including shoosing between getting a check or receiving direct deposit. I was back to work much faster than anticipated and never did collect - but I think there are much better alternatives to just giving money. Even though this is insurance (SSDI) I'd still like to see people, at the very least, have to show up somewhere - any long term dole should be part of a work or training program - with a big push to getting off the dole altogether. There are also people with mental health disability who have too much time on their hands - and that causes problems, in addition to the fact that they don't get the self esteem that comes from work and from contributing to society.

I think we should do more to honor work, and that includes both demanding more of people on the dole and making life better for those who are working and struggling at the lower rungs of the ladder. I'd like to see the government cover the social security contribution of low wage workers, and increase the initial tax exemption on wages (for example - exempt the first 20,000) and pay for it by re-instating the estate tax for estates over 5 million dollars (with some exemptions)and,if needed, increasing the tax on unearned income.

I think modifying some of Bush's faith based initiatives program would also be useful. People on the dole select amongst programs to work for while on the dole. I think secular organizations should be included. No political campaigning or lobbying type work - but things of clear benefit to society.

Able bodied people should work for their support, and most disabled people can still pitch in useful ways - even if they can't fully carry their weight.
