Atlanta???View Messages“I'm in talks with my company about a promotion and transfer. Job is less work, more enjoyable, stable and lots more CHA-CHING. Any TT'ers in or near ATL? Any glaring pro's or con's that we might not think about?” 9:49:18 PM 10/13/05 “Real Estate is pretty high. Not california high but high none the less. Very high for the SE. Depending on location commute times may be 1 hour + to affordable housing unless you live in "shady" parts of town. Always plenty to do in the area though.” 9:52:49 PM 10/13/05 “Atlanta is a pretty hip city last edited: 10/13/05 10:03:14 PM” 9:55:24 PM 10/13/05 “According to Sperling's Best Places the cost of a house in Atlanta is below the nation's average. It's not much higher than the cost of a house in Nashville. Avg in Nashville- 159,700 Avg in Atlanta- 166,500 and the nation avg- 208,500.” 10:01:22 PM 10/13/05 “You guys have been to Atlanta. You know it can take over and hour just to go from one side to another. You will NOT find anything worth living in inside the perimeter for $165. My best friend and his wife bought a two bedroom condo in Decatur for $190kish. Like I said... Atlanta's housing prices aren't super high compared to the nation or other large cities but compared to the rest of the south which I assume you've lived in most of your live going to Bammer and living in TN, Atlanta housing is expensive. Because Atlanta is so spread out often it's hard to get something affordable and decent near where you live. What part of Atlanta is this new job at?” 10:09:20 PM 10/13/05 “Right now we aren't even talking about a house. We aren't ready for that yet. We would get an apartment if we move there. And from what I can tell the apartment prices aren't any worse than what we pay here. There are condo's in Nashville that cost that much! There's some new ones up the road from us starting out in the $200's. Nashville isn't cheap either.” 11:01:31 PM 10/13/05 “living anywhere is expensive, you have to look at everything not just house prices” 11:11:21 PM 10/13/05 “Make sure that they money they are offering is worth the increase in expenses. Look at a salary calculator based on how much you make now where you live and how much you would make in Atlanta. I have never lived in Atlanta, but the cons I see are: - housing prices - long commutes - crime rate Pros would be thing to do. You just have to be sure that you have the money it would cost to do those things. Exker is right, housing prices shouldn't be the only factor you look at. You should also look at the quality of life. Just my $.02” 5:45:34 AM 10/14/05 “In Atlanta the big two are always commute time and housing. I'm very skeptical of those average prices. OTOH, my brother in law lives in Montgomery and found himself in the same spot about a year ago. The places he looked into were nice and were cheaper than places in Montgomery. Talk about left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing though. The day after he interviewed for what would have been a promotion the slot was totally eliminted.” 6:37:29 AM 10/14/05 Opie “Definelty do it. The women down in the bar area of Buckhead are HOT. Spectucalar blonde one night at Fado. Great Thai place on our way to Cheetah's one night with a waitress I fell in love with.” 7:54:27 AM 10/14/05 “the cheetah club is on both the pro list and the con list....lol” 8:15:43 AM 10/14/05 “Peachtree St.! Nuff said.” 8:17:34 AM 10/14/05 “Not only housing prices, but you also have to factor in TN doesn't have income tax, Georgia does. TN pays for everything with propertty taxes, so since you are currently renting your tax burden will increase. Do you know how much a car tag is in Georgia? They are more expensive then TN but I haven't bought a car tag in Tennesee since '98. The tax on the car tag is based upon your vehicle's value... so if you have something in the ~10k range you may get away with about $150 but if you own something $20k+ you're looking at a $300+ car tag.” 8:21:31 AM 10/14/05 “If you can find work.. I'd look to North atlanta/georgia... the farther away from the city you are the better” 8:24:31 AM 10/14/05 “Thanks Lee. Yeah baby let's move to Atlanta because the women there are hot!” 8:26:06 AM 10/14/05 “Thanks Lee. Yeah baby let's move to Atlanta because the women there are hot!” Miss Opie 8:26:06 AM 10/14/05 sounds logical to me” 8:28:49 AM 10/14/05 ““Thanks Lee. Yeah baby let's move to Atlanta because the women there are hot!” You’ll have to excuse lee. He has been hypnotized by the female genitalia from an early age. He even named his first born son Labia. last edited: 10/14/05 8:34:53 AM” 8:28:50 AM 10/14/05 “You guys will be the only couple that doesn't work for Delta!” 4:21:53 PM 10/14/05 “Their major league baseball team sucks!” 4:41:02 PM 10/14/05 “Hey, watch it. 14 dicision titles in a row. Good sushi in ATL.” 5:02:35 PM 10/14/05 “Haven't you OPIE's ever traveled thru Atlanta on a Friday afternoon??? Hours and hours of stop and go. I wouldn't live in Atlanta unless I could live VERY close to my job and shopping areas, far away from the crackheads.” 7:57:31 PM 10/14/05 Target “If your married/LTR and she finds out there is a 2 story Target on Peechtree near Lennox Square, you are toast. Blalock lives north of town and works at the airport, he never has too bad traffic but as I recall his hours lended to that. You got bicycling, paddling, rock and caves up toward Chattanooga, Cohutta Wilderness and NF up in N Georgia, and the cycling up that way too. Tha traffic would suck though. I bet you could find a fixer upper inside 285.” 9:43:38 PM 10/14/05 “thanks breaus” 11:42:42 PM 10/14/05 “ohhhhh 2 story target???? awesome!” 12:08:57 AM 10/15/05 “If you guys do end up moving there...I have to spend 6-8 weeks there next year for work, 2 weeks a shot. I'll definately give you a call for some weekend backpacking.” 10:47:26 PM 10/15/05 “it looks like we are going. sounds good dub!” 9:00:11 PM 10/17/05 “Well we cam meet half way at FDR state park and do a little hiking on the Pine MOuntain trail if you're ever inclined to head my way.” 9:12:20 PM 10/17/05 “My first stretch in Atlanta will most likely be Nov 8-18 but that's up in the air since I'm getting a new position. Not sure if you guys will be there at that time? If not, I'll still have six weeks there next year. Probably hit up Springer Mtn. first since I've never been there.” 7:36:32 AM 10/18/05 “There really isn't anything exciting at Springer. Pretty boring actually. I would suggest Blood Mountain instead if you want a good day hike or overnighter.” 8:13:22 AM 10/18/05 Blood Mt “Watch out for the roving packs of boy scouts. Consider something by Dicks Creek Gap or above Tate city in S Nan Wilderness” 10:08:13 AM 10/18/05 “Congrats on the new position Dub! What will you be doing?” 10:34:45 AM 10/18/05 “If you can find work.. I'd look to North atlanta/georgia... the farther away from the city you are the better” juztyn2 Stay outta our mountains, k? ATL has crept plenty far north. Look south, please. I've never seen scouts on Blood... Ope, You haven't noted exactly where the job will be located. Atlanta has a length and breadth of about 70 miles. If the job is in the subburbs, you can find very affordable housing in the exurbs. While I was teaching at Stockbridge HS in N. Henry Co., I rented a two bedroom farmhouse for $450.00 in the south of said county. 25 minute commute. Another option to a suburban job location is to live in town. That way, you're commuting opposite the masses, and the drive can be downright pleasant. East ATL, Grant Park, Decatur, etc, have become havens for the young and beautiful. Old neighborhoods have experienced a resurgence in recent years. It's an implosion thing resulting from the burban expansion extending too far. Despite it's traffic woes, Atlanta has the best freeway system on the planet. The drive from Cartersville to McDonough, or Villa Rica to Covington, or Gainesville to Newnan is unparalleled anywhere... at 3 a.m..... BTW - ATL has the longest average commute (distance) in the US - 30 miles roundtrip. LA commuters sit in traffic the longest tho... Look for traffic to only get worse - the outer perimeter (northern arc portion) went down in flames a year or so ago. Thats got GRTA scrambling 'round the drawing board again. I've lived within 35 miles of ATL airport since 1961. I've seen the scene go from the Atlanta Crackers to 14 consecutive championships in a Major League division; from a baggage and family laden pickup truck ride across the Flight Line to board a McDonald Douglas DC-6 to 1300 flights a day; from Dixie Highway to Spaghetti Junction. If Buckhead (uptown) were a seperate city, it would be the south's 7th largest. In the 90's, ATL grew by a Birmingham. My county, Henry, doubled in population during the same period - 50k to 100k. The Gwinnett County area around the Mall of Georgia will be an urban area equal in size to Baltimore by the year 2020. At that time, metro ATL will have a population equal to Manhattan - about 6,000,000. Y'all can have it... I hear the Home Depot in Boise is hiring...” 11:13:41 AM 10/19/05 “As I understand, even God makes transfers through Hartsfield-Jackson.” 12:58:01 PM 10/19/05 “my terminal is in conley....they have recommended i live in stockbridge or mcdounough. My friends live downtown, new candler park...and michelle will be working with the hospitals downtown...we plan on living smack in the middle instead of doing the commute thing.” 6:43:03 PM 10/19/05 “the live in teh middle thing is cool so long as you don't have kids and school districts to think about. You should be able to have a pretty good time.” 8:37:52 PM 10/19/05 hospitals “If she is working at Grady tell her to get a handgun not sure about Atlanta Med.” 1:41:17 AM 10/20/05 “All of these positive comments are really making me excited about the move. Does anyone not have anything good to say?” 8:49:35 AM 10/20/05 “they did a study about washing hands in stadium bathrooms. atlanta braves fans were the least likey to wash their hands.” 8:51:36 AM 10/20/05 “good luck” 9:20:10 AM 10/20/05 “The stadium is really nice. There is at least one REI, maybe two, in the Hotlanta area. It is close to some really good hiking. That's all I have to say.” 9:35:06 AM 10/20/05 “They have a very nice Bass Pro Shops. Wait, no, that's Buford, NE of Atl... ;-) last edited: 10/20/05 10:05:57 AM” 10:05:37 AM 10/20/05 ““All of these positive comments are really making me excited about the move. Does anyone not have anything good to say?” Miss Opie 7:49:35 AM 10/20/05 better find out if they still have "Freaknik" in Atlanta every spring.” 11:48:08 AM 10/20/05 11:50:49 AM 10/20/05 “thank goodness, then.” 11:51:25 AM 10/20/05 “i had the misfortune of being in Atlanta for some baseball games during freaknik one year. it was, ummmmmm, not good.” 11:53:34 AM 10/20/05 “of course we all know what MARTA means..lol guess it didn't work when that was going on last edited: 10/20/05 11:55:21 AM” 11:54:45 AM 10/20/05 “My wife was caught in it one year when she was taking some training in the Atlanta area. Took her a couple hours (or longer, can't remember) just to get out of Atlanta.” 11:56:20 AM 10/20/05 “hell, doesn't it ALWAYS take a couple of hours to get out of Atlanta?” 12:07:00 PM 10/20/05 “It hasn't for me, but I'm not usually there during the morning or afternoon rush.” 12:09:39 PM 10/20/05 “I'm not certain, but the educated could guess on what MARTA stands for. My guess - Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority.” 12:24:18 PM 10/20/05
