I'll get the stuff from the gas station then. No worries. I'll work out drive details tonight and estimate when I'll arrive at the parking lot. I still don't actually know where this place is but I am sure it's buried in the thread somewhere. I know Crash Bang's instructions on how to find that camp site were posted a while ago. Is it still agreed upon that this is the site we want to snag? I saw a few posts about other options.

One other question. I know we camp out on Friday night, hike Saturday, then are we planning on camping a second night (Saturday night)? Or are people going to split after the return-shuttle?

This did become a shuttle hike at one point, didn't it?

Man, I don't know sheet about what is going on, do I? :)

correct me if i'm wrong but from what i can tell from their website and the KY dept. of fish and wildlife, hunting is allowed in this area but only muzzle loaders and bow's are in season the time we'll be there which there shouldn't be a whole lot of them anyway...that's if hunting is even allowed in the red river gorge area

does anyone know?

ok, the prelim forcast for friday is 46/28...46 for the day is great but i'm too big of a puss for 28 at night...man, i'm gonna freeze my a$$ off...of course it's still 10 days off, it will probably change 3 times by then

nigal

i could be pulling this out of my a$$ but did you at one time offer to let me borrow a 0 degree bag?
thriftyhiker
10:30:19 AM
11/30/05

I have but one zero bag. I did offer to let you use my 35 degree quilt to supplement your bag. If it’s a deal breaker for ya you can take the zero bag and I can just double up bags. I sleep warm and I have an 85 pound heater sleeping with me.
Nigal
10:46:18 AM

that's allright...i have a 20 degree bag and can bring some blankets...i'll be fine plus i might be bringing my furry heater as well

Honey would love having another dog around.
Nigal
10:26:00 AM
12/01/05

it all depends on the weather...if it's real cold or wet i probably won't bring her...she's a spoiled pampered dog that doesn't like the cold and i don't want a wet dog in the tent w/ me
thriftyhiker
10:32:55 AM
12/01/05

I always bring a beach towel and a rough comb for Honey. She gets combed out and dried just before bed and then she sleeps on the towel.

ok, all this talk about quilts has peaked my curiosity...are they specific for camping or are they just normal quilts?...i've never seen one or if i did i ignored it cause i don't usually camp in the winter

nigal, if you don't mind toting it along i wouldn't mind giving it a go just out of curiosity
thriftyhiker
11:51:48 AM
12/01/05

That's cool. I'll bring it. It's only about a 35 degree quilt but you can get a good idea of what they are like.

Hunting in RRG
Hunting is allowed in RRG. KY has several different seasons for deer hunting; rifle, bow, and black powder. The hunters are there but mainly on the edges or in Clifty Wilderness especially on weekends.
The biggest hazard you have to worry about are falling buckeyes around bases of cliffs. Human bodies hurt from 300 ft. :o

19? Sweet. I guess I'll bring the zero degree bag since it's pretty close to car camping. I may increase my gear list for the 16 miler if the nights will be in the teens. Right now I have a pretty minimal rig. I don't need much for a day-hike in the 40s but if I am forced to spend the night (injury, etc) I would want to be prepared.

i was thinking we should drive from martins fork trailhead to rock bridge trailhead, and hike back to camp, instead of the other way around. itll make for one extra trip in the car, but itll give us an extra 20 minutes of daylight. whaddaya think?

I am loaded to the gills on luxury stuff for the overnight portions of the trip. my backpack is huge (mostly the 0-degree bag and 4 season pad). Lots of calories too. Major love-boat backpack, way off the chart for me. This will be a fun trip. I have all this heavy gear I never use that I'll be lugging with me. I am thinking of bringing real food even.

The daypack for the 16 mile trip is the exact opposite. The food is nothing but dense calories and carbos. No frills.

Really looking forward to it.

Hey Crash
What is the semi-final count for the trip? I must tell you that my husband is not crazy about the boy/girl ratio.

It has been cold in Kentucky - in the 30's and forties. I hiked some in LBL last weekend - it rained the whole time and was 37 degrees.

It's supposed to snow on Thursday.
