She thinks it's fake because he seems to keep leaving cameras behind-He did leave a camera by the side of the road when he hitched a ride but the crew prolly picked it up when they came to get him in the helicopter.

I think the root that he ate was from pond lillies but Im not 100 percent sure on that. Whatever it was didnt seem to agree with him!!

I was thinking that maybe if he had soaked it overnight, it might have been better. There are a lot of starchy roots that are like that.

I think your right-even if it didnt taste any better he would have been hungry enough to eat it anyway!!LOL

I looked up one plant called pond weed on a canadian survival site and it could have been what he was eating. It said prolly all species of that plant have edible roots.

Canyonlands yes. He couldn't trap squirrels in a national park. Or leave a junked bike behind, for that matter.

“He waded out into a pond to pull up some kind of root to eat, does anyone remember what that was?”

cattails maybe? "

supposedly, the only show that survivorguy had someone along with him was the arctic one, because of the polarbears.

If you go to his website http://www.lesstroudonline.com/
you can read some interesting stuff about this guy. He and his wife lived for a year in the Canadian backcountry with no technologies that didn't exist 500 years ago. He's also a touring/recording musician.

Also when he was in Canada, he ate pond lilly tubers. That what he called them in the show. The show was called Boreal Forest

That show repeated last night. He dug out pond lily tubers and first roasted them. That tasted bitter, so he boiled them. He ate some, then barfed it back up. Later he found some cattails and tried to pull out the tubers, but it was too late in the season for them. They were woody.

So the message I got was don't eat pond lily tubers.

The key to things like pond lily tubers is multiple changes of water to remove the bitter/ vomit causing compounds. The way I've read about preparing the tubers is boil twice, then dry and grind into meal. I suppose the multiple boilings might do it if you're desparate.

Thanks Geo, since I'd already seen the episode I turned it off when he pulled them up.

And Treebait, sounds feasible, if you're desperate.

He ended up roasting snails.

There is a new episode on next week. They are advertising it heavily on Discovery channel.

Discovery is running half-hour abridged versions. When they say new episode, they mean new to Discovery. It will be the jungle episode according to their schedule.

How many are there? I think I've seen:
1. Canyonlands?-Mountain bike wreak
2. Boreal Forest-canoe wreak
3. Mountaintop-
4. Artic -snowmobile breakdown
5. Jungle-kayak floats away
6. Sonoran desert-dirtbike wreak
7. somewhere in Ontario in winter-plane wreak

OK, answered my own question by going to the website:

OLN
Les is producing two one-hour specials for Canada’s OLN (Outdoor Life Network) called “Stroud... Off The Grid”. This new and captivating show will highlight Les’ family's move to their 150 acre bush lot with solar power, rain harvesting systems, and many new technologies for living an energy-conscious and self sustaining life.“Stroud…Off the Grid” episode 1 will premiere in the beginning of Spring 2006

Last night's episode was in the Georgia swamp.

He was wearing cotton socks, and recommended that everyone do so, so you can get lint off of them to start a fire.

I predict an increase in the number of foot blisters amongst dumbasses.

Sick, well at least I can be grateful that I'm not in a swamp somewhere with only sock lint to save my life. LOL!

And what, you can't start a fire with wool lint? Hasn't he ever done that thing where you set your foot on fire while wearing wool socks? (Well it looks like it's on fire, but the flame just eats the loose wool hanging around on your sock and then goes out.)

And those socks are going to stay dry exactly how???

There are far more reasonable fire building materials in the swamps than sock lint.

Ever hear of trenchfoot?
It's pretty damn easy to get down here.

He was using dry spanish moss as tinder, too. He also built a turtle trap, and actually caught a turtle.

Then the dumbass found a rattlesnake, beat it to death, and ate that.

He is on the Science Channel at 10 p.m. Friday and again at 7 p.m. Sunday.

He often has a multi-tool and perhaps some other things that somebody who gets lost in the wilderness might have. Think mountain biker, motorbike rider, snowmobile (in the Arctic).

I did not catch the program in the Georgia Swamp yet. I think it will air Friday night.

Most of the scenarios are based on something that might happen to somebody to get lost. Not everybody hikes into the wilderness. Cotton socks is not good advice though, regardless of how you get into a survival situation. There are alternatives to sock lint.

He often does other things that I would not do - drink directly from questionable water sources, eat mushroom (in one case), and build small fires very close to his shelter (the grasses he used for bedding caught fire).

I still like the show. Some of the advice and tips are worth knowing. Like anything, you pick and choose what you want.

He took that pocket saw to test it out. It broke. He swears by an axe. Apparently he never met a Sven saw.

Sure, he does a lot of stuff we would never do, like cut standing trees to build his shelter, definitely a no-no anyplace I've ever hiked. But it is supposed to be a survival situation. Still, I think the cotton socks are a stretch, and him saying "always wear cotton socks" is just plain bad advice.

I caught the last 2 episodes. He's an interesting dude. I think he likes to mix it up a bit as far as fire building methods. I've seen him use a bow, and now an empty BIC lighter with the sock lint and tissue trick. Hey, in the absence of socks, why not navel lint?

I can buy the cotton socks thing. Having seen the plane crash/Ontario winter episode where he sung the praises of a wool sweater, I think he knows wool socks are better for hiking. But, how many of us wear wool socks 24/7? I don't, but I do when I'm hiking. And who's to say exactly when a person is going to be faced with survival scenario? If you knew in advance, you'd take gear. If you're just thrown into it, you may indeed be wearing cotton socks. The show isn't about survival situations that arise while hiking, specifically. And in the swamp, wool isn't going to keep his feet any drier. You're going to have wet feet regardless.

That being said, he shouldn't have said to always wear wool socks. But I do like the show.

I saw part of the show last evening in the Utah canyons

he went 4 days without a drink of water, finally found a stagnant puddle in a rock depression surrounded by mouse droppings, sucked about a pint out the center with a straw.
