“I just read something recently about these training missions from WWII - lots of crashes in the Sierras during that time. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/2005/10/19/state/n110927D67.DTL” 2:19:24 PM 10/19/05 “can you imagine finding something like that? kinda makes ya shudder.... also, kinda makes me wonder how many bodies are laying around 'out there' just waiting to be found....” 2:27:12 PM 10/19/05 “Lots. A lot of people "disappear" in the US every year, and they're not all photogenic young white females. Not too many of them get frozen into glaciers though.” 2:31:13 PM 10/19/05 “How come I can't get the "What's for Lunch?" thread out of my mind?” 2:34:44 PM 10/19/05 “Read "Alive" lately?” 2:37:11 PM 10/19/05 “Dana Stabenow, an Alaskan mystery writer, had this as part of the plot in one of her novels a couple of years ago.” 2:46:16 PM 10/19/05 “No......but I'm thinking if you find enough glacier treats you might save a lot of weight in your pack, no?” 2:47:29 PM 10/19/05 “Reminds me of reading something about one of the later Antartic explorers digging down into the ice and finding an old food cache of Byrd's, IIRC. He claimed the food was in perfect condition, and still edible after ~30 years or so.” 2:50:18 PM 10/19/05 “Rumor is it's one of Metallica's songwriters from the early 80's.” 2:54:10 PM 10/19/05 “Is there some sort of Metallica "in-joke" in there, c_bat?” 2:56:02 PM 10/19/05 “Its really not that funny, I figured it would fit right in with the rest of the jokes floating around in here. Its even less funny if I have to explain it.” 3:02:23 PM 10/19/05 “lol, ok I'll take your word for it.” 3:06:30 PM 10/19/05 “When were up near Mt. Robson in Canada the ranger had told us that every once in a while a dead body appears from the glacier. Most often if someone fell in a crevace years ago they were never found. Sooo.. they don't appear till that crevace finally reaches the edge of the glacier. The funny thing they said was that they usually have ID with them so family can be contacted.” 3:26:51 PM 10/19/05 “yuck - to work your way out of a glacier from a creavasse... i'd imagine that you became slightly ground up on the way out...” 3:31:30 PM 10/19/05 “i hope they find Amelia Earhart one day, that would be cool.” 3:33:56 PM 10/19/05 “I wouldn't go looking for her in a glacier...” 3:37:46 PM 10/19/05 “well whatever! LOL! maybe she took a detour...” 3:39:40 PM 10/19/05 “According to Star Trek, she's on an alien planet in statis right now, lol...” 3:45:26 PM 10/19/05 “wow, the article says that 35,000 our of the total 88,000 military MIA's are deemed recoverable. That's a lot of flesh! Where are they all do ya think?!” 7:58:56 AM 10/20/05 “NOT in California!” 8:00:12 AM 10/20/05 “I saw a movie where some mountain climbers had found a young man frozen in the ice. It was somewhere in the Austrian Alps. Anyway, he was engaged to get married to this girl but he vanished and I suppose left her feeling jilted. For 50 years or something he stayed frozen until found and the hikers brought him to the nearest town and layed him in a room on a table. Meanwhile, the news spread and low and behold, his fiancee who was now an old woman came to see if this could be her lost love. It turned out that it was and it total blew my mind when I saw how the ice had kept him looking so young ( but, dead of course) and how this woman who is the same age as he (probably 80 years old)sat there crying for her lost love that had finally returned. Does anyone know the name of the movie? last edited: 10/20/05 8:21:41 AM” 8:13:14 AM 10/20/05 “All I can think about is Encino Man.” 8:48:23 AM 10/20/05 “and that southpark episode” 8:49:44 AM 10/20/05 “Perhaps you all are not aware but there is a fulltime unit whose sole purpose is to investigate crash sites, etc where America's fallen heroes may lay. This man was somebody's son at least. Maybe also a brother, uncle or a father. I do sincerely hope that his family can be found and that a peaceful site of Eternal Rest can be found for him.” 8:53:34 AM 10/20/05 ““Reminds me of reading something about one of the later Antartic explorers digging down into the ice and finding an old food cache of Byrd's, IIRC. He claimed the food was in perfect condition, and still edible after ~30 years or so.” bloodpusher 2:50:18 PM 10/19/05 My question would be--how did he know that the food was EDIBLE? ***shudders at the thought***” 9:07:08 AM 10/20/05 “They ate it. It was fine.” 9:09:30 AM 10/20/05 “I thought of Metallica's song "Trapped Under Ice" when I first read the story too. Off of Ride the Lightning from @ 1985 if my memory serves me correctly.” 9:28:33 AM 10/20/05 “I like how the articles keep mentioning how the site can only be reached by "several days of hiking." Um, my map shows it's about a day's hike (a long day, perhaps) from North Lake. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, it looks like a decent access point to the JMT, albeit cross country via Lamarck Col.... Also - the horror! - the workers staying overnight with temps down to 15!!” 11:15:46 AM 10/20/05 “I thought the dead bodies of climbers on Everest are all over the place.” 2:12:25 PM 10/20/05 “Well, I just looked and there aren't any here... Oh, you mean on Everest. Yup. I think they were stepping over one guy for a couple of seasons until a climber finally cut his rope and let him go down the mountain.” 2:14:00 PM 10/20/05 “Here's a pic of Hodgeman, from Sierrapalooza '04, taking a pic of the Mt. Mendel glacier. Hodge was probably looking right at the iceman and didn't notice. ”9:53:33 PM 10/20/05 “...and Wind Walker missed him also. He might be able to take a great photo but he can't find a dead iceman under his nose!!! ”9:57:34 PM 10/20/05 “I saw a little blip about this on the news tonight....very interesting stuff considering it is a dead person.” 10:12:50 PM 10/20/05 “More had been coming out. The body was very well preserved considering how long ago the plane crashed.” 1:43:29 AM 10/24/05 “Skibum was one of the guys that chipped the body out. I would love to have been out there on that job!” 1:53:31 AM 10/24/05 “Would have been totally cool to be there. I love WWII stuff and MIA related stories especially.” 3:28:50 AM 10/24/05 “Latest news on the WWII airman: ”8:24:00 AM 10/29/05 “The story and this photo of Lamarck Col made the front page of the Fresno Bee this morning.... ”2:06:19 PM 11/13/05 “Hey, that place does look familiar :-)” 2:36:49 PM 11/13/05 “They got it wrong. I made it out alive!” 3:14:20 PM 11/13/05 “I gladly would of sold The Bee a current pic. Bastards! ”3:24:56 PM 11/13/05 “LOL! Mr Pants... we all have that same pic. They should have looked over that pile of rocks too.... ”9:42:39 PM 11/13/05 “beautiful pics” 9:44:54 PM 11/13/05 “If anyone is really interested in following some of the nitty-gritty of this story, join me on this paratrooper discussion board. One of the top researchers of WWII paratroopers (Dave Berry) has been researching this story. I met Dave at a paratrooper reunion a few years ago and was mesmerized by some of the things he has pulled together. Strikehold504 Forum last edited: 11/13/05 9:54:18 PM” 9:51:37 PM 11/13/05 “Oh,yes. And here is my pic of Mendel Glacier (behind my son)...on my 55th Birthday, I might add! http://community.webshots.com/photo/164444009/164601389oARAEJ last edited: 11/13/05 9:57:51 PM” 9:57:18 PM 11/13/05 “holy cow batman!” 11:09:00 PM 11/13/05 “There was just an article in the SF Chron the other day about the 4 families that are awaiting the positive ID of the airman - so far the army hasn't been able to draw a conclusion, but apparently they are close.” 8:05:36 AM 11/14/05
