Remind me on the diabetes, but I think you can control this, correct and it can disappear once the baby is born? I may be totally wrong though.

How big is your son now?

Yes, it's specifically only while pregnant. Not to get too graphic but as soon as the placenta leaves the body the diabetes is gone. She should be able to control it with diet, possibly pills, but insaline would be the last resort.

Max is 28lbs (28th percentile) and 32in (97th percentile !!!)...so he's tall and skinny

Hmmm, maybe I will be rid of my diabetes, when I lose this pot belly.

Oh man, I'm sorry to hear about the prenatal diabetes! I was hoping like heck that wouldn't happen to me, I'm really glad it didn't. Is your wife upset about having a C-section, or is she cool about it? How do they determine how much a baby weighs, anyway? I was always under the impression that they could make a ballpark guess, at most. Also, I thought that for 2 months to go, 4 or 5 pounds is about right, anyway, for a normal baby.

she wants one, plus our son was one too...he was 10lbs 4oz, the reason for the c-section...once you've had one it's possible to go "natural" for the second but most doctors recomend to do another c-section especially if they're so close together like ours

I had gestational diabetes with my daughter ErinAnne, my third child. I was on a diabetic diet, and also controlled it with excercise. They eventually chaulked it up the the Terbutaline, (pre-term labor), that I had been on for 6 weeks and took me off of it for the last four weeks. I had to go on complete bedrest. ErinAnne weighed 8lbs and 15ozs. They wouldn't let me nurse her until she was tested for diabetes herself. She was absolutely fine. Just a fat healthy baby girl! My biggest baby, my 2nd child Steve Jr was 9lbs 5ozs. My last three children, (out of 4), were born vag and without being cut. I had fantastic doctors!

Pamela, when in your pregnancy did they diagnose you?...my wife and i were wondering with less than 2 months to go if she could even do any good by changing her diet
thriftyhiker

They usually test for that at around 28 weeks of pregnancy, so really you're only like a month behind when most people find out. I would think diet would help a lot...2 months is a long time, especially considering that's when the baby is gaining the most weight (half a pound a week or so from then on).

Why is it that they only tested her now? Or did they test her before also, and it came back negative then? Also, did they test her twice? I've heard there are a lot of false positives the first time...my midwife said that if I were to test high for sugar on the first time around, we'd have to do it again.

they did do 2 tests...i think the first one was at 28 weeks and wasn't as involved as the second...i think on the first they only drew blood once and it came back high...when that one comes back high they make you go in for a longer test...the took blood 3 times, once an hour...2 out of the 3 came back high

funny you say that cause that's exactly what she does...her doctors get a kick out of her cause by the time she has an appointment she's already diagnosed herself...i tease her that she's just a few internet hours away from having her phd

Barbie got her test results back yesterday; positive for gestational diabetes. She is looking at this is a good thing though. A chance to control her weight going forward.

Barbie huh? I once dated a girl that people said was a Barbie.

When is she due? End of Feb?

Right, pretty much the same thing I said to her last night when I got home. She failed her first test (failed with Grace as well) and said that she somewhat hoped she would fail the second test.

Barbara is her name, however she has always been called Barbie.

March 22 as of now. She was induced at 38 weeks with Grace because her blood pressure was off the chart. We assume this will happen with this child as well.

It's wonderful we have these medical advances compared to other countries. Somebody on here recently said that in-home births have a safer record ... but that's because they've already been screened as low-risk!

when does it develop?
Currahee

1/17/08

According to this, it can develop as early as 20 weeks...they usually test you at 24 to 28 weeks.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/gestational-diabetes/DS00316/DSECTION=1

Generally they make you drink some kind of gross sugar drink, but my midwife let me just eat a large meal instead, and tested me after that (since I would never eat or drink anything with that much sugar normally).
lyra

She is 31 weeks now

and exactly what lyra said on the drink. Basically an orange soda minus the carbination with tons of sugar in it.

WK, my wife has been able to control hers with great success with just a change in diet...they sent her to a dietician...she's basically on a low carb diet which is harder to follow now that the low carb fad is over

she checks her sugar 10 times a day and she's only averaging about 1 high reading a day

That is what she is expecting to do. She is going to meet with the Dr. tomorrow to go through everything.

Best wishes to both your wives guys. My ex had that with all 3 of my daughters. The first, she was bed ridden with toxemia for weeks, then induced. The second was diabetes, and she went 2 weeks early. The third was diabetes, and she went a month early. That one spent a week under the oxygen hood, and another month at home on the o2 monitor, and oxygen, and nebulizers etc. That shlt sucks.

My ex-wife was bed ridden too. I suspect a causal relationship between that and that pregnancy, though not certain.

Best of health to everyone.

Lyra, you sure are a fussy eater. First you won't drink what the doctor would give you, then you turn down my Christmas dinner. What's up with you?

Hope all goes well! I had a good case of Preclampsia with Ford. I had him a month early due to that (my blood pressure was horrid!).

I have to say that what the Drs can do to help higher risk women is amazing though :-)

Elliette(Ellie) Kathlean is here. She weighs 9 lbs 15oz and is 20 1/2 inches long. She had to spend the first 24 hours of her life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for low blood suger but was able to maintain it properly on her own and is now in the room with us. She sleeps a lot and crys very little. Mom and baby are doing fine. Big brother is under whelmed as usual but it starting to warm up. He loves having all the friends and family around.

Here's a pic but it was taken with a cell phone so the quality's not the greatest. More to come.
