You’ve seen my boat, stove. It has a long waterline and slides smoothly through the waves. This makes for a wet ride. Because of its size, it has good cargo capacity and can deliver a large payload to the destination.

Good question, lizs. Here’s the difference:

I listed leaving Cumberland when tides dictate that we needed to leave early in the morning. Some folks don’t like to get an early start.

I listed arriving in St. Mary’s when tides dictated that we couldn’t get back any earlier than late in the afternoon. I know that stove has a long drive and may not want to get back that late. Ditto for others.

Sorry, lizs, I thought you wanted to paddle to Brickhill from Crooked River. I’ll pass on the ferry/hike then. I’d be willing to paddle from Crooked River to Brickhill and back before the Seacamp trip. Or I’d be willing to paddle from Crooked River to Brickhill to Seacamp to St. Mary’s. Or I’d be willing to paddle from St. Mary’s to Seacamp to Brickhill to Crooked River. But it would take an extra two or three days to do those trips. I’ll pass on the ferry/hiking bit.

Thanks for making the reservations, lizs. It sounds like a plan then

These are the tides for St. Mary’s. I must have been reading tides from a slightly different location. It doesn’t change our basic plan much, but does make a difference. There are a number of locations in this area from where they measure the tides. This got me into trouble before. Believe me, with 6 foot tides, you want to get it right.

Friday March 17
High 10:50am
Low 4:40pm

96% moon visibility

Sunday March 19
Low 4:39am
High 12:02pm

86% moon visibility

This means that we’ll need to leave St. Mary’s sometime after 11am on Friday. We’ll need to leave Cumberland before about 9am on Sunday.

You know, arclite told me a story about him misreading the tide tables with less than great skill on an older trip of his. ;-)

Dang Architects never did learn how to read graphs. I think I better check for myself!

If dayhiker were serious about coming, he'd double-check my figures. He's used to that sort of thing.

It would be a good idea to call the local kayak shop as well. They have the inside scoop on local tide tables.

You know I'm a strong paddler, stove. When I misread the tide tables before, it was a trip. There I was paddling up the St.Mary's River against the current and the tide. I am digging in as hard and fast as I can possibly muster. I'm using every ounce of strength I've got.

I look over at the bank to measure my progress. I could have crawled on hands and knees faster than I was moving. A highly recommended workout if you want to look like Ahnold.

From lizs:
March 17-19. Booked one campsite -- including up to 6 people -- for March 17, 18 and 19. In retrospect, I suppose we could ditch the 19??

From lizs:
KAYAKER RESERVATIONS:
For up to six people both Friday, March 16, and Saturday, March 17 at Sea Camp. The campsite can hold from 3 to 4 tents, Tonya said, depending on tent size. (don't bring the car camping tent!!!) (I may sneak in Friday night... will see... but I am not included in the six for either night)

Looks doable. We might need to double up in the tents. Small footprints please.

How we gonna get included on your reservation lizs?
You gonna pay for us, if you go in solo early Thursday backcountry?

do we need to make the ferry reservations this early? also lizs we could pick you up from the airport. we will drive up on thursday and will stay over night. we may want to stay on sunday night and then catch the ferry back and drive home on monday. i think that is the plan i will go with. we share a 2 person bp tent, the one i had this past year. i also have a 1 person if someone needs to borrow it for this trip(pct 1).

I would strongly suggest 'yes', cyndeee.
How about seeing if you can get a site in addition to the one lizs reserved at Sea Camp. Each can only hold three or so tents.

lizs, sounds like you are getting cold feet. ;-)
Want to transfer the Sea Camp reservation to me?

OK, I said the "kayakers" had six reservations for Sea Camp. I would think it's more like the first people to sign up. I'd guess there would be more kayakers, but not necessarily all. And I have the reservations!!! (stovey will be wishing he had called for them, Mooooooooohahahaha... cyndee, you are in! ;-)

Actually, I was told it could be 3 to 4 tents, just all depends on size. :-)

Time for me to throw a monkey wrench into the planning.....

The hurricane messed up the Sea Trial schedules and I just learned there's a high chance of me not being able to make this kayak trip in March due to a major sea trial of a ship I'm working on. Plus dayhiker just posted a Sipsey trip the weekend before and ST and I usually make those Sipsey trips.

I'm going to withdraw from a leadership role in this March 17-19 yak trip as I can not confirm I will be able to make it. I am now only a 'maybe'.

I'm going to set up a later trip when I get back from this weekend's backpack.
lizs said April Saturdays are full so it will prob be very first part of May.

I took HPMs words to heart.

Just got off the phone and I have one Sea Camp site reserved for the nights of May 5 and 6, 2006 for this second kayak trip.
No ferry rides were included in the reservation, just a spot at sea camp.
If you insist on riding the ferry, make your own reservation for the ferry, as that requires a deposit.
Since the site only holds about three tents, would someone call and try to get a second site?
DO NOT SAY IT'S FOR AN INTERNET GROUP!
One Sea Camp site with up to six people.
I feel it will be needed. You can always cancel it.

I'm used to swimming in the Gulf. What would Atlantic water temps be in early May. It would be a bit cold in the Gulf, but doable. I imagine it'd be too cold to swim in the Atlantic. Is that a fair guess?

Okee Dokee then…

…Lizs says that maybe she’ll think about going with us unless a better offer comes along.

Did this strategy work when you were dating, Lizs?

Dayhiker,

Daytime high air temperatures average around 73 degrees and low air temperature averages 50 degrees in March.

Water Temps average 62 in March. In the middle of April they go up to 72.

Oh great, Stove!!! Why don't we just start booking all the available sites through May.

March, April, and May are all beautiful months here. It starts to get hot in June.

i just checked my calender and the week-end of march 17-19 is the same as the florida trail conference in umatilla. my cousin and i have already made plans to attend. she is going through a divorce and we spend alot of time together, she's really more of a sister. any ways we went last year and she had a really good time. sorry lizs that week-end is out for me.

Tides for St. Marys River, St. Marys starting with May 1, 2006.

May 5-7
Tides say we should leave St. Mary’s before 9:30am Friday
50% moon visibility
Tides dictate leaving Cumberland no earlier than 11:30am Sunday

May 12-14
Tides say we should leave St. Mary’s after 9:30am Friday
Great moon visibility
Tides dictate leaving Cumberland no later than 9:00am Sunday

May 19-21
Tides say we should leave St. Mary’s before 8:00am Friday
50% moon visibility
Tides dictate leaving Cumberland no earlier than 10:30am Sunday

May 26-28
Tides say we should leave St. Mary’s after 9:30am Friday
Poor moon visibility
Tides dictate leaving Cumberland before 9:00am Sunday

Thought I'd through this out there. I'd vote for May 12-14. The weather can be changeable at that time of year, but we have a great chance that the day/night air and water temps will make for perfect kayak camping.

Posted on Paddling.net.....

Last weekend fifteen members of our club, Florida Sea Kayaking Association, Inc. went camping on the southern end of Cumberland Island, Ga. Cool nights, bumpy water, raccoons that could open zipped tents and makeup bags, stand on each others shoulders to reach trash almost four feet off the ground and a submarine with helicopters and patrol boats as we left. It was a great time.

Makeup bags? WTF?

Yep, those raccoons are very talented. Why they hung garbage only 4 feet off the ground is beyond me though. The horses would go for it then too.

I love seeing the subs go in and out of there.

I heard this trip was off a long time ago... that it was moved to a different date.

So don't count on me for any permit(s). Better call and see if you can get a reservation. If you can't, you better get yourself ready to take advantage of cancellations. Which, as has been pointed out before, basically always happens. You just need to call every day -- and I mean every day. I did this last year and after probably 3 weeks I got the reservation needed.
