I want to take the kids on a trip to ski, snowboard, or snow tubing this winter.

I tend to think my old legs would appreciate tubing more, and I know the insurance company would be eternally grateful if I kept the kids on tubes...

Where is the best place to go in West VA or NC?

lol, i's just kiddin.

I think WV is generally better than NC - more consistent snow.

Up around Dolly Sods Wilderness there's a big ski resort.

Snow tubing is inherently more dangerous than skiing.

I'm not sure if Snowshoe in WV has snow tubing, but it's probably the best place in WV. They have Snowshoe and Silver Creek just a mile or so down the road (lift tickets bought at one are good for each other).

For NC, Sugar Mountain or Ski Beech are both pretty good. Again, I'm not certain about snow tubing, but you can look at their websites.

WTF? Well, hell, that defies logic.

There are more injuries per capita than injuries when skiing. It's more related to the fact that you have absolutely no control over a snow tube and there have been cases where people have been killed doing it. The last I remember was about 4 or 5 years ago at Ski Beech, I think.

http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/enviromentalissues/a/011005a.htm

'In 2003, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported 46,682 injuries from ice hockey; 52,831 injuries from ice skating; 91,086 injuries from sledding, snow tubing and tobogganing; 41,569 injuries from snowmobiling; 164,974 injuries from snow boarding; and 144,360 injuries from snow skiing.' Think of how many more skiers/riders there are per season than snow tubers.

Most places make you sign a release. As an example: http://www.skicampgaw.com/Tubingrelease.pdf If it weren't dangerous, you wouldn't have to sign a release.

Most places print the following on lift tickets for skiing/riding and snow tubing: "User of this ticket assumes all risk of personal injury, death, property damage or injury inflicted on others."

I know that Sunday River makes you wear a helmet when snow tubing.

Don't get me wrong...snow tubing is fun. Just realize there are risks associated. I do recall now that Silver Creek (down the road from Snowshow Mtn. in WV has snow tubing right near the hotel at Silver Creek. You pass the Silver Creek on the right just before getting to Snowshoe Mtn.

i think a lot of places have "tracks" that you go tubing on. it didn't seem that dangerous to me. im surprised so many people get hurt. the place i went tubing at had a big hill carved out to look like one of those potato sack slides at carnivals where it's like 3 humps, you go down a section then it levels out a little then you go down another section, etc.

Both Beech and Sugar were great areas in NC, chili.

Snow tubing is very dangerous. I once jumped twelve buses on a snow tube and slammed into the far ramp. It took 2 hours to dig me out and it was super cold. Plus, I spilled my hot chocolate in the process. Be careful out there people.
